Following thorough review, Penn State to purchase police body-worn cameras - Penn State News

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After extensive research, Penn State will purchase body-worn cameras for all police officers at 22 campuses within University Police and Public Safety (UPPS), with the goal of equipping officers with the cameras within the next year.

Equipping every officer with body-worn cameras will enable UPPS to be more transparent and accountable as part of its ongoing efforts to build a stronger relationship with the Penn State communities it serves.

“As I’ve said before, we in the law enforcement profession can and must do everything in our power to do and be better and we can only do this while in close partnership with the communities we serve,” said Police and Public Safety Assistant Vice President Charlie Noffsinger. “Body-worn cameras have been tied to increased accountability and give police and citizens another tool. We will be working closely with community stakeholders as we move toward implementation.”

Noffsinger noted that body-worn cameras should not be seen as a solution on their own, but can be used as a promising approach to better interactions within communities if appropriate policy safeguards and training are in place for their use. Some research studies have shown that officers wearing body-worn cameras receive fewer complaints than do those who are not wearing the cameras.

Since 2017, under the direction of new leadership, UPPS has been undergoing a comprehensive five-year centralization process, which involves merging police and security units at 22 campuses into one department. This included restructuring the organization and a comprehensive look at major investments, like expanding personnel and purchasing essential equipment for Penn State police officers across Pennsylvania. It also emphasizes uniformity in policy and protocols across the state for all Penn State policing operations.

As part of the centralization plan, UPPS researched body-worn camera technology and its requirements, along with other tools for all 22 campuses. Following the conclusion of the research phase, UPPS in April requested funding from the University for body-worn cameras for roughly 150 police officers and related funding for video data storage, training and operations as part of its 2020-2021 budget request.

“This is a significant commitment for our budget, especially amidst constraints due to the pandemic, because we understand the critical importance of providing this resource to our police officers, who serve and protect the Penn State community,” said David Gray, senior vice president for Finance and Business. “Body-worn cameras offer advantages in keeping all parties safer and accountable during police-citizen interactions, enabling situational awareness, and improving community relations.”

UPPS remains in the planning phase of the project and will provide future updates to the public, according to Noffsinger. The planning phase includes developing related policies and procedures that align with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) as part of the department’s ongoing accreditation process. CALEA is a credentialing authority for law enforcement agencies focused on demonstrated efficacy, fairness and standards of best practice for communities and law enforcement.

Network telemetry is becoming the new normal - GCN.com

data architecture (Quardia/Shutterstock.com)

INDUSTRY INSIGHT

Network telemetry is becoming the new normal

The work being done on federal, state and local levels to ensure the health of society during and post-COVID-19 will be driven by the internet of things (IoT). From contact tracing to drones, the reopening of America will be regulated by millions of data streams delivered from thousands of connection points. IT practitioners will be tasked with making sense of all of the information coming across their screens.

Processing and understanding all of this data will be a challenge, for two main reasons.

First, different devices produce different types of data streams and logs. A lack of consistency across devices can make it difficult for IT administrators to get a good handle on all of the information coming in.

Second, it’s not just IoT devices IT administrators need to monitor. They must also stay on top of traditional infrastructure -- which could be a combination of new and legacy systems -- and applications existing across cloud service providers.

Agencies need a better way to collect and process the tidal wave of information coming their way and gain better visibility into the various devices providing this data. Network telemetry offers a path forward, allowing agencies to more easily collect and analyze multiple data streams, leading to positive applications in COVID-related data processing and beyond.

Pulling information together

While network telemetry isn’t new, it’s becoming increasingly important as the volume of data continues to grow. Network telemetry collects data from different sources, pulls the information together and funnels it for easier analysis. It can also help administrators gain a better picture of the health of a particular device. Organizations can receive real-time information about the status of their devices, helping them perform more accurate and faster root cause analysis to pinpoint problem areas.

There are several network telemetry technologies available, including Amazon Web Services’ VPC Flows, which can help monitor data being generated by AWS hosted sites, and Cisco’s ACI data center fabric. Both give administrators automated remote management, monitoring of various connection points and easier data management.

However, unlike simple network management protocol (SNMP), the bedrock of traditional network monitoring, there’s no set standard for network telemetry -- although the Internet Engineering Task Force provides a nice framework. This could create challenges for agencies needing to monitor a wide range of devices and data points.

A broader data canvas

Agencies must be able to holistically collect data across their entire canvas and process the information in an easily comprehensible and actionable way. They must have the right tooling in place to field data quickly so those on the ground can make the right decisions at the right times.

Being able to process multiple data streams and understand how those streams apply to each other is critical. Take, for example, states’ approach to reopening. State health officials are relying on different datasets to tell them what can be done and when, including analyzing positive case rates, contact tracing, testing status and more. Each data point informs others to create a complete picture of a state’s readiness to proceed to a new phase.

Processing each of these points manually would take an enormous amount of time and could be prone to human error. It’s better to implement a network telemetry solution designed to take the data from the different sources, automatically analyze how the data streams relate to one another and use the analysis to inform different decision points. This “one source to rule them all” approach is much more efficient and accurate than manually stitching together the information.

Better analysis, better outcomes

Network telemetry can improve outcomes in use cases beyond COVID-19 response. For example, military operations often depend on the quick consumption and analysis of multiple data streams.

Warfighters need just-in-time data, particularly in combat situations. Some soldiers may have IoT devices as part of their uniforms, and these devices may be sending information on inventories, supplies and more back to central command. Administrators must be able to interpret this data in real time to provide troops with whatever they need at a moment’s notice.

The best and most efficient way to do this is with a telemetry system designed to coalesce multiple data points into a single and easier-to-interpret point. Simplifying the streams can lead to better, faster and more accurate decisions capable of directly impacting soldiers’ lives.

The new normal

In the war against COVID-19, the number of devices and data points IT practitioners must manage will continue to grow. In addition to contact tracing, IoT devices will likely be used to monitor crowd sizes, patients who have recovered from the disease, pharmaceutical inventory levels and more. Network telemetry will play a vital role in this new normal.

Facebook to Ban Network With ‘Boogaloo’ Ties - The New York Times

Facebook said on Tuesday that it was taking down a network of accounts, groups and pages connected to an antigovernment movement in the United States that encourages violence.

People and groups associated with the decentralized movement, called boogaloo, will be banned from Facebook and Instagram, which it also owns, the company said. Facebook said it would remove 220 Facebook accounts, 95 Instagram accounts, 28 pages and 106 groups as a result of the decision. It is also designating boogaloo as a dangerous organization on the social network, meaning it shares the same classification as terrorist activity, organized hate and large-scale criminal organizations on Facebook.

The boogaloo network promoted “violence against civilians, law enforcement, and government officials and institutions,” the company wrote in a blog post. “Members of this network seek to recruit others within the broader boogaloo movement, sharing the same content online and adopting the same offline appearance as others in the movement to do so.”

The decision is the latest in a flurry of recent moves by tech companies to tighten the speech allowed on their popular services and more aggressively police extreme movements. The issue has become more pronounced in recent weeks after the death of George Floyd, a Black man in Minneapolis who was killed in police custody last month. The killing set off major protests across the country demanding changes to police departments and the treatment of Black people more broadly.

On Monday, Reddit said it was banning roughly 2,000 communities from across the political spectrum that attacked people or regularly engaged in hate speech, including “r/The_Donald,” a community devoted to President Trump. YouTube said barred six channels for violating its policies, including those of two prominent white supremacists, David Duke and Richard Spencer.

Facebook’s changes have largely focused on the boogaloo movement and white supremacy hate groups so far. In May, Facebook said it updated its policies to ban the use of “boogaloo” and related terms when used in posts that contain depictions of armed violence. The company has also identified over 800 posts tied to boogaloo that defied its Violence and Incitement policy and did not recommend them to other users. And this month, the company said that it had removed two networks of accounts connected to white supremacy groups that encouraged real-world violence.

Followers of the boogaloo movement seek to exploit public unrest to incite a race war that will bring about a new government. Its adherents are usually staunch defenders of the Second Amendment, and some use Nazi iconography and its extremist symbols, according to organizations that track hate groups.

“Boogaloo” is a pop culture reference derived from a 1984 movie called “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo” that became a cult classic. Online, it has been connected to what some consider sarcastic and humorous memes, as well as with occasional physical violence and militaristic shows of force.

In June, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested three men in Nevada who called themselves members of the boogaloo movement, accusing them of trying to incite violence at an anti-police protest in Las Vegas. In May, police officers in Denver seized three assault rifles, magazines, several bulletproof vests and other military equipment from the car trunk of a self-identified boogaloo follower who was headed to a Black Lives Matter protest — and had previously live-streamed his support for armed confrontations with the police.

In addition to the boogaloo network, Facebook said it would also remove 400 additional groups and more than a hundred pages that also violate its Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policy.

The company said it would continue to identify and remove attempts by members of the movement to return to the social network, the company said.

Graham Brookie, director of the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, applauded Facebook’s crackdown on Tuesday.

“The Dangerous Individuals policy at Facebook mirrors the language of law enforcement, and meets a high threshold of online harms that lead to direct action in the real world,” Mr. Brookie said. “Limiting the online conversation that leads to that action is a good thing and a public safety issue.”

Alex Stamos, director of the Stanford Internet Observatory and the former chief security officer at Facebook, said the decentralized nature of the boogaloo movement and its tendency to use irony and euphemism in posts could make enforcing the policy difficult.

“Deciding who is actually a boogaloo member now that they are motivated to obfuscate their allegiances will be a huge, ongoing challenge,” Mr. Stamos said.

Comcast touts network performance and Wall Street takes note - FierceTelecom

Comcast says its broadband network has earned high marks for its performance so far during the Covid-19 pandemic, and now Wall Street analysts are projecting more broadband subscriber growth for the company.

The company claims its network is delivering above-advertised speeds nationwide, based on the results of more than 700,000 daily diagnostic network speed tests. Upstream traffic is up 32% as more Americans work from home, and downstream traffic is up 11%. The company sees its solid network performance as a bright spot in the midst of the Covid crisis.

“It’s been an amazing three months,” said Comcast Chief Network Officer Jan Hofmeyr. “You work so hard for so many years to build something, and then to see it really come to life in a moment like this is for us just amazing.” Hofmeyr said that since 2017, the company has invested $12 billion to build more than 33,330 route miles of new fiber into the network and to increase network automation and artificial intelligence.

RELATED: Industry voices - Heynen: What's next for cable broadband networks?

The analyst team at Wells Fargo recently increased its Q2 estimate for Comcast broadband subscriber additions to 275,000 from 165,000, a bump of 66%. “Broadband continues to see tailwinds,” wrote analyst Jennifer Fritzsche, noting that both the increase in home-based workers and the higher demand for home-based entertainment are good for Comcast.

Meeting that demand has required many of Comcast’s network technicians to work throughout the pandemic. “In March and April of 2020, as the Covid-19 surge rose, our network teams more than tripled the number of network enhancements they made during the same period a year before,” Hofmeyr wrote in a blog post. He said the team added 1,700 new 100-gigabit links to the network.

“We basically implemented in those two months the entire capacity that we were planning to do for the year,” Hofmeyr told FierceTelecom, adding that Comcast had virtually no network downtime during the upgrade, and was able to add the capacity without hiring additional technicians. “We had that critical workforce that stayed within the data centers, and they performed the upgrades,” Hofmeyr said.

Meanwhile, Comcast moved almost all of its cable call center staff to a work-from-home model. The company also committed $500 million to support pay and benefits for employees whose jobs are interrupted. The five members of its senior leadership team, two of whom have recovered from Covid-19, are donating their salaries to Covid-19 relief efforts until the crisis ends.

One of those executives, CFO Michael Cavanagh, recently told investors at a CrĂ©dit Suisse conference that he thinks the pandemic is prompting consumers to make the switch to broadband, and he expects them to stick with the service. He sees video and mobile as offerings that can make Comcast’s broadband product more attractive. “The lifetime profitability of a broadband customer is so high, we want to continue to optimize that and deepen the relationship,” he said.

One thing Comcast hasn’t yet offered to its home broadband customers is enterprise-grade connectivity that is distinct from its consumer product. Competitor Cox Business recently announced a WFH solution that includes endpoint security and Microsoft 365, and last month Comcast told FierceTelecom it was working on a home-based SD-WAN solution. This month Hofmeyr said the company has nothing to announce on that and continues to look at various options for new offerings.

WDFN switches from sports programming to Black Information Network - The Detroit News

After years of broadcasting sports news programs, 1130 AM WDFN The Fan has transitioned to Black Information Network, a 24-hour news service dedicated to the Black perspective.

The format change started Monday night with speeches and audio vignettes from African American figures such as former U.S. President Barack Obama, talk show host Oprah Winfrey and rights activist Malcolm X. Tuesday at noon, an official, pre-recorded announcement was broadcast.

"Today, right now, it's the birth of a completely new network," said Charlamagne tha God, national radio personality and co-host of "The Breakfast Club" with DJ Envy and Angela Yee.

"This is the launch of the first and only all news audio network ... for and by the Black community," said host, actor and comedian Steve Harvey.

The change is part of a national launch of Black Information Network by iHeartMedia. In addition to being distributed through the iHeartRadio mobile app, the network is also broadcast on radio stations in several cities in addition to Detroit, according to Variety.

Black Information Network is overseen by radio veterans Tony Coles and Tanita Myers. Coles said in a press release that the network will "fill a void by providing continual news and objective information with a full focus on the Black community."

“We began developing our 24/7 Black news source last year, and events of the last few weeks, especially the senseless and tragic death of George Floyd, highlighted the need for this network," said Coles. "Now is the time for our voice to be heard, and I could not be more proud of our work and the team we are assembling at BIN."

“We are pleased and proud to support the launch of BIN: Black Information Network by contributing resources that will have the greatest impact – our reach, our multiple platforms, our technology infrastructure and our broad, in-depth relationships with consumers,” said iHeartMedia chairman and CEO Bob Pittman. “We are honored to be joined by some of the most important companies in the world that are also committed to this mission.”

Two radio-related outlets had signaled a change was in the works, reporting on their websites Monday that WDFN would be ending its sport radio format.

According to RadioInsight.com, owner iHeartMedia is preparing to launch a new network on at least 15 of its stations. WDFN was among the stations nationwide "stunting" with programming targeting African American audiences, the website reported.

Detroit Sports Nation cited a Facebook post Monday from Mark Wilson, who formerly worked at WDFN and said on his page that the station "will be part of iHeart Media’s flip of 15 properties to the 'Black Information Network.' Mostly in major markets, they will produce radio targeted to African American audiences.  No doubt a smart move at this time especially considering stations like WDFN were floundering big time."

WDFN-AM launched in 1994. It relies mostly on syndicated sports shows. Over the years, the station has featured programs by Detroit News sports columnist Bob Wojnowski and former staff columnist Terry Foster.

Work-from-home network risks to your business | NCET Biz Tips - Reno Gazette Journal

Subscribe: Stay in the know with a 99-cent subscription to the RGJ

NCET helps you explore business and technology.

Businesses of all sizes are transitioning their workforces from their “work from home” models back to the physical office, but many are opting continue to allow their employees to work remotely, re-architecting their entire security strategy along the way. In doing so, unintended security risks are being introduced to business networks, and a simple VPN connection isn’t the all-in-one solution.

Often overlooked is the importance of securing those remote devices and network segments beyond the employee’s machine themselves. Home networks become an extension of the business network, introducing a wide variety of risks to critical business internals, which are oftentimes outside the control or management of organizational IT. Some businesses provide company laptops and mobile devices for their employees to work remotely (good idea), while others opt to allow their employees to use their personal PCs (bad idea). Either way, connections from within the user’s home network open unexpected back doors, increasing the attack surface to the user and the business network.

Here are a few tips that may help enhance your network security experience for remote and work-from-home employees:

Always use virtual private network (VPN) connections

Regardless of your business model, it’s important to secure external connections into your business network. End-to-end encryption provided by VPN connections is important to secure network traffic regardless if users are connecting to your internal network, their cloud instances or external business resources.

Enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible

Implementing multi-factor authentication will add to the complexity of your authentication process, but there are benefits gained from the increased security that these layers provide, as well as the fact that doing so will satisfy many compliance requirements and minimizing account takeovers and tool hijacking.

Lock down your network appliances (and we aren’t talking about refrigerators!)

Remove those factory-default accounts and passwords. This is the low-hanging fruit and it’s extremely easy to perform a quick search for the default credentials for most devices, granting an attacker administrator access to your network. Be sure to disable unnecessary ports. Routers, switches and printers often ship from the factory with several remote access ports enabled by default to enable configuration and administration, allowing anyone to access them until they are closed down and secured. Ports such as 21, 22 and 23 are often forgotten and left unsecured.

Build a resilient (3-2-1) backup and recovery strategy (the most important of all!)

A 3-2-1 strategy is disciplined, reliable and cost-effective method of backing up your critical information. Three total copies of your critical data, but on different mediums. The first is a local backup to a server or PC; the second is backed up to an external or removable hard drive, then disconnected; the third is backed up to an online or cloud service. It’s important to practice recovering your data periodically to build confidence in your or your IT team’s confidence to do so.

I know we’re only scratching the surface here, but I will expand on these and other risks during the upcoming Biz CafĂ©. Please join me!

Cyberpunk 2077 cyberware: how to equip implants and customise V - PCGamesN

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

Want to get your hands on cyberware in Cyberpunk 2077? Equipping implants and customising V is the main way to create a playstyle you enjoy, and experimenting with the various cyberware you’ll find in Night City is one of the main draws of this massive RPG.

This guide contains some spoilers, so if you want to keep the cyberware a surprise, then check back when Cyberpunk 2077 releases later this year. Cyberware is a part of V’s body and although you’ll start off with standard implants you’ll discover and be able to install rarer implants into slots as you progress, which are all equippable to various parts of your body. There are five rarity tiers including common, uncommon, rare, epic, and legendary, with some implants spread across rarity tiers which will take up more slots.

Cyberware can be found in Night City’s ripperdoc clinics and will have multiple fragments you can use which provide different effects. Cyberware falls under the categories active, triggered, and passive. Active abilities are similar to weapons and will need to be activated, triggered cyberware activates when conditions are met, and passive abilities provide benefits with no player action.

Cyberpunk 2077 cyberware

The Cyberpunk 2077 cyberware we know of so far are:

  • Mantis Blade – Arm cyberware which upgrades melee attacks by giving V blades that protrude from the forearm
  • Blood Pump – A triggered cardio cyberware which improves healing
  • Microtors – A passive nervous system ability which improves movement speed and precision
  • Reflex Tuner – A triggered nervous system ability that actives slow-motion when health drops below a certain amount
  • Gorilla Arms – An active arm slot upgrade that provides a melee power and strength boost
  • Monowire – An active arm slot upgrade, provides V with a fiber optic whip which can slice enemies
  • Synlungs – A passive cardio slot ability that provides stamina regeneration
  • Kerenzikov – A triggered nervous system slot, provides V with slow-motion after dodging an enemy attack

That’s all the Cyberpunk 2077 cyberware we know about so far, if you’re already planning your character, check out which Cyberpunk 2077 life paths there are as part of V’s initial character customisation.

iHeartMedia to Launch BIN: Black Information Network on Radio, Digital Channels - Variety

Radio and podcast giant iHeartmedia has accelerated the launch what it says it the first — and only — 24-hour service dedicated to news coverage from a Black perspective.

BIN: Black Information Network is “focused on service to the Black community and providing an information window for those outside the community to help foster communication, accountability and a deeper understanding,” the company announced Tuesday.

BIN will be distributed nationally through the iHeartRadio app and accessible via mobile, smart speakers, smart TVs and other connected platforms. Programming also will be on all-news local AM/FM broadcast radio stations providing local news, weather traffic and sports in addition to national news in markets including Atlanta, Charlotte, Cleveland, Augusta, Ga., Columbus, Ga., Macon, Ga., Detroit, Greenville, N.C., Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Norfolk, Va., Riverside, Calif., San Francisco and Seattle, with additional local markets being added over the next 60 days.

Furthermore, BIN will provide the news service for several additional iHeartMedia hip-hop, R&B and gospel stations across the U.S. Those include Power 105.1 in New York, Real 92.3 in Los Angeles, WDAS and Power 99 in Philadelphia, WGCI and WVAZ in Chicago, WJLB in Detroit, The Beat in Houston, The Beat in Miami, WQUE in New Orleans, and KMEL in San Francisco.

In addition, selections of BIN’s radio content will be distributed as podcasts across iHeartRadio’s podcast network, including a daily news and analysis show running 10-20 minutes. Also, excerpts from iHeartRadio’s Black culture podcasts will be included in BIN’s broadcast radio programming.

BIN is set up as a standalone business unit within iHeartMedia, led by president Tony Coles (above left) and director of news operations Tanita Myers (above right).

Coles, who also serves as division president of the iHeartMedia Markets Group, has more than 35 years of experience in the radio industry including stints as a programming exec, on-air personality, brand manager. Myers, a veteran radio producer, broadcaster and news anchor, joins iHeartMedia’s BIN after 15 years at Reach Media. She was formerly director of operations for “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” and executive producer of “Rickey Smiley Morning Show,” and she’s worked as a reporter in news, traffic and weather for several major-market stations.

According to iHeartMedia, its broadcast stations alone currently reach 93% of Black Americans, giving BIN immediate access to audiences. The company plans to promote BIN across its social-media footprint as well. In addition, Clear Channel Outdoor (which spun off from the company last year following iHeartMedia’s bankruptcy reorg) has signed on as a national marketing partner.

“We are pleased and proud to enable the support the launch of BIN: Black Information Network by contributing resources that will have the greatest impact — our reach, our multiple platforms, our technology infrastructure and our broad, in-depth relationships with consumers,” iHeartMedia chairman/CEO Bob Pittman said in announcing the venture.

For the launch of BIN, iHeartMedia has adopted a sponsorship model, inking deals with Bank of America, CVS Health, Geico, Lowe’s, McDonald’s USA, Sony, 23andMe and Verizon. Those marketers “will be able to deliver important messages to BIN’s audiences and serve as a platform for philanthropic and community outreach to build brand connection and support the Black community, as well as use it for advertising messages as needed,” according to the company.

According to an iHeartMedia study of Black listeners, 86% agreed that a service like BIN is necessary and are likely to rely on it as an important news source while 83% think such a service would provide important information they can’t get on radio or TV today. The company said the BIN concept proved “equally strong” among respondents in both 18-34 and 35-54 age brackets.

“BIN: Black Information Network will fill a void by providing continual news and objective information with full focus on the Black community,” Coles said in a statement.

The company began developing what became BIN last year and recently moved up the launch timeline. The “events of the last few weeks, especially the senseless and tragic death of George Floyd, highlighted the need for this network,” Coles said. “Now is the time for our voice to be heard, and I could not be more proud of our work and the team we are assembling at BIN.”

According to iHeartMedia, BIN is actively hiring for various positions; the company said job listings will be posted to iheartmediacareers.com.

Ericson AIR answers 5G network site challenges - Ericsson

Communications service providers can now deploy mid-band 5G networks faster and on a wider scale without adding to their site footprint, thanks to two new Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) antenna-integrated radio (AIR) solutions.

Hybrid AIR and Interleaved AIR are the latest additions to the Ericsson Radio System portfolio, enhancing the company’s 5G platform.

Ericsson has recognized that physical space restrictions at some base station sites are a challenge for communications service providers wishing to extend their footprint to include 5G. The new AIR solutions directly address this issue to enable communications service providers to manage the growing complexity of macro sites and towers while reducing site footprint and optimization costs.

No extra physical space is needed at existing sites. When deployed with Massive MIMO, communications service providers can deploy mid-band 5G with the new solutions faster and on a larger scale.

Per Narvinger, Head of Product Area Networks, Ericsson, says: “It’s a footprint issue. At some network sites, size literally is everything. Communications service providers globally often have limited possibilities to increase the space occupied by network equipment. They need solutions that fit in existing sites and still provide great performance. With the Hybrid AIR and Interleaved AIR solutions, we can help our customers to quickly deliver the benefits of 5G Massive MIMO to more end users. This launch also shows the effectiveness of fully integrated Kathrein Mobile Communication products in our Ericsson Radio System.”

HOW IT WORKS

With Kathrein Mobile Communication antenna technology, Hybrid AIR and Interleaved AIR can introduce 5G mid-band to existing sites by combining antenna-integrated radios and multiband passive antenna technology in one enclosure.

A simulated calculation by Ericsson experts showed that the upgrade to Hybrid AIR or Interleaved AIR with Massive MIMO can result in up to seven times greater mobile broadband capacity than currently available from existing multiband antennas. The capacity gains come from improved Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) spectral efficiencies, new FDD bands and added Massive MIMO mid-bands. The new AIR solutions also boost 4G capacity.

PARTNERING WITH SWISSCOM AND VODAFONE

Swisscom and the Vodafone Group are two longstanding Ericsson partners who have worked with the company on the solutions.

Daniel Staub, Head of Mobile at Swisscom, says: “At Swisscom, we have rolled out 5G technology nationwide as the first provider in Europe. We reached 90 per cent population coverage at the end of 2019 already. Close collaboration with Ericsson and deploying the Hybrid AIR helped us to reach that goal. We are now delivering wide mid-band capacity, while reusing established sites and minimizing additional footprint. We continue to work and innovate to bring the best end-user experience to our 5G subscribers.”

Francisco Martin, Head of Radio Products, Vodafone Group, says: “Ericsson and Vodafone have jointly designed the Interleaved AIR antenna platform, a key enabler for mid band 5G roll-outs as it supports legacy bands plus the new 5G active antennas. This compact product saves space and simplifies the infrastructure needed at mobile sites, reducing total cost of ownership.”

CBP CIO to leave after three years - Federal News Network

Phil Landfried, the chief information officer and assistant commissioner of the Office of Information and Technology (OIT) at the Customs and Border Protection directorate in the Department of Homeland Security is retiring on June 30.

A CBP spokesman confirmed Landfried’s decision to retire after 16 years of federal service. The spokesman said Sonny Bhagowalia, the deputy assistant commissioner and deputy CIO, will be take over for Landfried in the interim.

Landfried has been CIO of CBP since 2017 when he took over for Charlie Armstrong who retired.

Phil Landfried is leaving as the chief information officer at the Customs and Border Protection directorate.

Before coming to CBP, he worked in other areas of OIT. Landfried was the deputy assistant commissioner and executive director of the Cargo Systems Program Directorate where he oversaw all aspects of CBP’s cargo systems.

He implemented agile software development to advance the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). The office used agile to deploy software that improved cargo processing and the agency’s relationships with trade partners and other government agencies.

Before that role, Landfried also served as executive director for the Targeting and Analysis Systems Program Directorate (TASPD) in OIT.

During his tenure as CIO, Landfried rarely spoke publicly about CBP’s ongoing IT modernization efforts. The agency has made some significant progress around network and bandwidth challenges and securely connecting devices to the cloud.

He also added enterprise business management support services under a deal with Deloitte in 2019, according to a FCW report. CBP also has worked closely with IBM to move applications to the cloud and implement robotics process automation tools.

CBP came under scrutiny in December by the DHS inspector general for lacking the technology to track migrant families, which led to numerous errors

In taking over as CBP’s acting CIO, Bhagowalia, who joined the agency in 2018, is in good position to continue to make progress. He has been CIO at the departments of Treasury and Interior, as well as the State of Hawaii.

Bhagowalia, for example,  will continue IT modernization efforts as CBP asked for $23.4 million more funding in fiscal 2021 to migrate its applications currently residing in its data center to the cloud.

“This migration is consistent with DHS and CBP’s IT Modernization strategies. CBP requires cloud migration funding to modernize and to align its infrastructure and operations with the guidelines and policies as stated in the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act (FITARA), Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI), and most recently Cloud Smart policies,” CBP stated in its 2021 budget justification. “The agency has identified over 180 applications that must migrate to the cloud before 2025. This funding is to migrate applications and sustain operational capability in dual locations until the migration is complete.”
