Big Ten Network, CBS, FOX and NBC Announce Early-Season Schedules - Big Ten Conference

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Big Ten Network, CBS Sports, FOX Sports and NBC announced their coverage for games during the first three weeks of the 2023 Big Ten football season and other select games later in the season. Details for those games can be found below.

In addition, start times for all 14 schools’ Homecoming contests were announced, along with the Big Ten Football Championship Game on FOX and bowl games televised by ESPN. Television designations not announced for homecoming contests will be released no later than 12-days prior to the game date and may be carried on Big Ten Network, CBS, FOX, FS1, NBC or Peacock.

The 2023 football season marks the first with a new set of broadcast partners that will deliver exciting matchups to fans across broadcast, cable and direct-to-consumer platforms. In addition to its three broadcast platforms (CBS, FOX and NBC), the Big Ten Network and FS1 will continue to carry games on cable networks. All games televised on CBS will also be available for streaming on Paramount+, while all games on Big Ten Network, FOX and FS1 will be available on the FOX Sports App.

NBCUniversal’s direct-to-consumer platform, Peacock, will carry Big Ten games live for the first time. All games televised on NBC will also be available for live streaming on Peacock, while games exclusive to Peacock will only be available on the platform.

Maharashtra: After 53-year wait, Nilwande canal network set for start - timesofindia.com

NASHIK: Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and his deputy, Devendra Fadnavis, will inaugurate the canal network of Nilwande dam on Wednesday, 53 years after the project was conceived to mitigate water scarcity in the six parched talukas of Ahmednagar and one part of Sinnar in Nashik.
The project was initially approved as Mhaladevi in 1970 at an estimated cost of Rs7.9 crore. The dam was supposed to have a holding capacity of 11 TMC. Nine years on, in 1979, the project was relocated to Nilwande - upstream of the Pravar river in Akole taluka of Ahmednagar. The dam's capacity was reduced to 8.52 TMC.
With all the delays, the final cost of the project went up to Rs 5,177 crore - around Rs 5,169 crore more than the initial budget.
The dam was completed and commissioned in 2014. But the canal networks were still under construction.
The project, including the dam and its left and right canals running up to 182 km, is aimed at bringing around 68,000 hectare of land under irrigation and provide drinking water to over 125 villages of Akole, Sangamner, Rahuri, Shrirampur, Kopargaon and Rahata talukas in Ahmednagar and Sinnar taluka in Nashik district.
The construction of the 85-km-long left bank canal with a capacity to deliver water at 921 cusecs is completed, except the concrete lining. However, the work on the 97-km-long right bank canal is still half done.
This is the first major project in the country where the piped distribution network for smaller distributaries will be carried out. But to make this a reality, it would take another three years. "Currently only the left bank canal has been completed. But the last mile connectivity is yet to be achieved. Digging of the entire right bank canal is yet to be completed. The project has received its fifth revised administrative approval that takes the project cost to Rs 5,177 crore," a senior official from the water resources department's Command Area Development Authority in Ahmednagar said.
Ahmednagar guardian minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has reviewed the project and directed the authorities to expedite the remaining works. "Our parched land will now be irrigated and it will benefit the farmers. Two generations have passed waiting for water and we hope that their wait ends soon," said Uttam Nirmal, a retired executive engineer of the water resources department.
"Lack of political, funds crunch, vested interests of some local leaders, changing priorities of the various governments, delay in rehabilitation of people displaced due to the work and filing of petitions in courts were ammong the factors leading to the delay of the project," he said.
Keshav Kurde, a resident of Shrirampur taluka, said "The foundation of Jayakwadi project was laid in 1966 and the dam was commissioned in 1976. Look what is happening here."

White Sox, Bulls Owner Gets Controlling Stake of Stadium Network - Front Office Sports

Jerry Reinsdorf, the Chicago White Sox and Bulls owner, has taken majority control of Stadium, the multiplatform sports network he helped create in 2017.

Industry sources have confirmed to Front Office Sports that Reinsdorf’s Silver Chalice sports media entity recently acquired a controlling stake in Stadium previously held by Sinclair Broadcast Group. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The equity move was precipitated in part by Sinclair’s own corporate issues, sources said. The company’s Diamond Sports Group, which owns and operates the Bally Sports regional sports networks, filed for bankruptcy protection in March and is continuing reorganization efforts.

Neither Silver Chalice nor Sinclair commented.

But sources indicated further, large-scale moves are expected by Stadium in the new Reinsdorf-led structure. Those moves will be closely watched against the backdrop of the October 2024 expiration of the regional rights contract for the Bulls, White Sox, and Chicago Blackhawks with NBC Sports Chicago.

Reinsdorf has previously explored starting his own network to varying degrees.

The Chicago-based Stadium – which operates out of the Bulls’ home arena the United Center – currently offers a series of live games, particularly within college sports, as well as highlights and studio programming. Key on-air personalities include basketball insiders Shams Charania and Jeff Goodman. It is available through a series of digital, cable, and over-the-air platforms.

Stadium was initially developed through a merger of assets from the former 120 Sports, Silver Chalice’s Campus Insiders, and Sinclair’s American Sports Network. Following this latest equity transfer, Stadium will continue to supply some programming to Sinclair-controlled outlets.

BCE CEO says regulatory intervention threatens to stall fibre-network investment - The Globe and Mail

Canada’s telecom industry is “moving rapidly” toward regulatory intervention that threatens to stall investment in high-speed internet networks in rural communities, BCE Inc.’s chief executive says.

In order to foster competition in the internet market, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission requires large telecoms to sell access to their networks to smaller internet service providers at regulated rates.

In March, the CRTC launched a review of its framework for wholesale internet access, citing a desire to increase competition and reduce prices. The consultation includes looking at whether the large telecoms should be mandated to provide access to their fibre-to-the-home networks, which offer faster speeds.

Currently, internet service providers are able to negotiate access to those networks, but they say the prices are too high for them to be able to compete.

Mirko Bibic, the chief executive officer of BCE BCE-T, cautioned on Monday that if the rates are set too low, companies such as his will be forced to curtail their investments, particularly in smaller, rural communities, where the return on investment is lower.

“If it affects the ROI, we will cut investment, or we will pace it out slower, and rural and smaller communities are going to get left behind – or they’ll have to wait another five to 10 years, which I think is fundamentally unfair,” Mr. Bibic said in an interview after a speech to the Canadian Club Toronto.

In its notice of consultation, the CRTC states the risk of discouraging future investments in fibre-optic networks is “minimal” because those networks are mostly built.

However, Mr. Bibic said there are still four to five million locations without access to the technology.

He also cautioned that regulations that place the interests of resellers over those of builders could have negative unintended consequences on the country’s critical infrastructure.

“If you keep pulling on that thread and take it to its darkest conclusion, we’re all going to rely on one network. Is that what we want? That’s not competition,” he said.

He urged regulators to “take a breather” and allow the market to settle in the wake of Rogers Communications Inc.’s RCI-B-T recently completed $20-billion takeover of Shaw Communications Inc SJR-B-T.

As part of that deal, Quebecor Inc.’s QBR-B-T Videotron Ltd. expanded beyond its home province of Quebec through the acquisition of Shaw’s Freedom Mobile, Canada’s fourth-largest wireless carrier.

“A merger was approved which makes one large competitor larger and makes another large competitor larger and extends its territory beyond the province of Quebec, and Bell and Telus are still there making investments. To me, that’s ultimate success,” Mr. Bibic said.

“So why don’t we just kind of take a breather, let the market operate? … There’s a risk of piling on from an intervention point of view, before we even let this new dynamic take place.”

Analysts have noted that competition between the telecoms has intensified in recent weeks, with Rogers and BCE’s Bell Canada entering into a price war on wireless and home internet bundles.

However, some analysts predict that the trend could be short-lived, with Rogers simply looking to appease regulators after its hotly contested takeover of Shaw.

Analysts have also noted that without mandated access to fibre-to-the-home networks, Quebecor will struggle to compete in the market for bundled services outside of its Quebec cable footprint.

Portugal considers banning Huawei from national 5G networks - Engadget

Portugal could become the latest country to effectively ban Huawei and other Chinese firms from participating in its 5G buildouts. As reported by Bloomberg, the government of Portugal this week recommended barring local carriers from sourcing 5G equipment from suppliers based outside of the European Union or from countries that aren’t part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED).

In a statement Portugal’s Higher Council for Cybersecurity shared on Thursday, the government said firms outside those jurisdictions pose a “high risk” to the security of the country’s wireless networks. The document didn’t call out Huawei specifically, but as China isn’t a member of NATO, the OCED or the EU, the company, alongside other Chinese suppliers like ZTE, would effectively be excluded from participating in Portugal’s 5G networks should the country’s cabinet approve the security council’s recommendation.

“Huawei has no prior knowledge of, and hasn’t been consulted about, this matter,” a Huawei spokesperson told the Financial Times. “Over the past two decades, Huawei has worked with Portuguese carriers to build out wireless networks and provide quality services that connect millions of people. We will continue to comply with all applicable laws and regulations, and serve Portuguese customers and partners who rely on our products and services.”

Banning Chinese companies from participating in its 5G networks would be an abrupt turnaround for Portugal, which has enjoyed close relations with the East Asian superpower for years. As the Financial Times notes, Portugal has been one of the biggest per capita recipients of Chinese investment in recent years. Altice Portugal, the country’s largest wireless carrier, signed a deal in 2018 to use Huawei equipment for part of its 5G rollout. If Portugal moves forward with a ban, it would join Canada and a handful of other European countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, that have recently barred the company from participating in their 5G networks.

Where Exactly Did That Network Packet Come From? - Hackaday

Have you ever noticed that some websites can figure out, at least roughly, where you are? Sometimes they use it to find you a closer content provider. Or they might block you from seeing certain things while offering you other things specific to your location. This is possible because there are databases that map IPs to locations. [Mark Litwintschik] looks at using those databases from an API or downloading them into your own database. He also shows some very large database queries, which is interesting, too. He uses IPInfo, although there are other providers. Some only provide a limited number of lookups, but there are plenty of free tiers for low-volume usage.

The database changes every day. Of course, each provider has a different way of getting data, and so there are differences. [Mark] compares the IPInfo dataset against MaxMind’s also free database. That involved comparing over 3 billion records! Actually, the 3 billion are the number of IPs that matched up in both databases. There were an additional 118 million that didn’t match and 34 million that were not in the MaxMind database.

Of course, of the ones that didn’t match it is hard to say which one was correct. As [Mark] mentions, IP address get sold — they are worth about $45 each, he says — so an IP that is in Texas one day might be in Johannesburg tomorrow.

What would you do with this data? Beats us. Maybe your home automation system wants to reject IPs from outside your country. Perhaps your robot needs to show a different user interface based on the remote requestor’s location. Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

We are surprised the value of the vanishing IPV4 addresses isn’t higher. Of course, that’s partly because your IP address isn’t always the one the rest of the world sees.

Golazo Network's Play To Be America's 1st All-Soccer Network - Front Office Sports

Until a few decades ago, there was little room in the United States for the world’s game.

America already had “football” — and because American exceptionalism convinced generations that soccer didn’t belong in the national sports culture, those who loved the sport anyway were left to enjoy it from the shadows.

“You were almost embarrassed or ashamed to say you played the sport,” former USMNT player and current CBS Sports soccer analyst Charlie Davies told Front Office Sports.

That all changed in 1994, when the United States hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time.

“That was literally the moment where soccer became a sport that people were interested in,” says Davies. “People could watch, people started to learn how to play. You’re just seeing the generations from that moment want more — and with that, the quality has gotten better.”

But as soccer’s popularity grew in the States, did it have enough cultural relevance to warrant its own dedicated network?

“NFL fans have NFL Network, NBA fans have NBA TV, MLB fans have MLB Network, NHL fans have NHL Network,” says CBS Sports Golazo Network coordinating producer Mike Nastri. “There was nothing that was committed to showing soccer 24/7.”

The Buildup

Prior to 2020, CBS Sports’ soccer coverage was sparse, to say the least.

From 1968 to 1976, the network broadcasted a handful of North American Soccer League games — most famously showcasing soccer legend Pelé to a U.S. audience. Then it was only a smattering of one-off, high-profile matches until 2019, when it acquired the U.S. rights to UEFA club competitions, including the high-profile Champions League. It extended those rights for six years and $1.5 billion last August.

CBS Sports senior creative director Pete Radovich Jr. set out on a mission to build the network’s soccer coverage — which began earlier than expected when previous rights holder Turner Sports backed out of its contract due to the pandemic in 2020.

“We knew from our data that this audience segment was growing fast, that it skewed young, and that it skewed to streaming preference largely because it was young,” CBS Sports’ EVP of digital Jeff Gerttula says. “We’ve seen it grow year after year, and as we’ve thrown more content at the audience, we’ve seen there’s almost an insatiable appetite for [it].”

From there, it was all about building a brand. Enough reluctance has remained over the sport’s national profile that executives at CBS Sports agonized over naming its blossoming soccer branch.

“It came out of our internal debates as to whether to use the word ‘soccer’ or the word ‘football’ in our branding,” says Gerttula. “Let’s find another word that captures the passion of the sport and everyone can agree on.”

That word was “Golazo” — the term shouted by those who have just witnessed a breathtaking, sensational soccer goal.

With Champions League and Europa League matches on CBS airwaves, the company decided to experiment with an “NFL RedZone”-style TV show that they aptly named “The Golazo Show.” The whiparound program hosted by Nico Cantor covers all of the action going on during packed UCL and UEL matchdays, ensuring that viewers see every goal from every game.

Perfectly Timed Risk

Paramount’s next step was its most ambitious — and riskiest.

After finding success with its first free, ad-supported television (FAST) channel CBS Sports HQ, the company decided to make its second America’s first-ever dedicated soccer channel — Golazo Network.

While the network’s execs specifically tell FOS that Golazo Network didn’t directly develop from the show, the name itself has become most central to its soccer identity.

“It’s built around that brand, which we think is energetic and fun for everyone and represents the best in the sport, which is the goal that really excites you,” Gerttula says.

Soccer has come a long way from that ‘94 World Cup moment — and it’s set to take another leap forward when North America hosts the world’s biggest soccer tournament again in 2026.

It’s why CBS Sports believed that this was the right time to launch Golazo Network in earnest.

“We’re in this sweet spot right now because we’re coming off a World Cup, and then we’ve got the 2026 World Cup, where all eyeballs are going to be on this global sport,” says “Morning Footy” co-host Susannah Collins. “So we’re kind of hitting it right at the perfect moment because interest is high.”

“The need for more content is there, and it just takes a big network to say, ‘We’re going to do it,’” says Davies. “It makes it that much more special to be the ones at the forefront.”

Like many successful sports media channels, Golazo Network is anchored by a morning show — in this case, “Morning Footy,” hosted by Collins, Davies, Cantor, Alexis Guerreros, and Jenny Chiu.

“It’s the show that I have always wished existed,” says Collins. “Now we get to be a part of it and host it and bring it to the masses. It’s just incredibly gratifying.”

“We want this to be the destination for soccer fans to come to and be able to hear about anything going on, whether it’s a property on Paramount+ or the EPL or MLS,” Nastri says.

That one-stop-shop mentality allows the show to cover nearly every league in the world. The Champions League, the top-flight European leagues, and MLS clearly lead the way, but if something big happens in Asia or South America, the “Morning Footy” team wants to cover it.

And the show’s desire for mass appeal doesn’t just extend to its coverage of different leagues around the world — it also wants to bring in fans of all kinds, from the hardcore to the casual.

“I think that soccer can be a pretty intimidating sport if you are a new soccer fan or you’re just getting into it,” says Collins. “It can be a little unwelcoming, and I think that it’s really important that we make it accessible.”

Around The World

Morning Footy occupies six hours of each weekday — meaning Golazo Network has 138 hours of content to fill each week outside its flagship show to truly be a round-the-clock destination for soccer.

Luckily, the near-constant flow of soccer matches around the globe provides plenty of opportunities to fill airtime, both through live matches and original content.

While the UCL may be the biggest property to which Paramount holds rights, it’s acquired as many others as it can. This past week alone, Golazo Network showed live coverage of Italy’s Serie A, Brazil’s Serie A, the Scottish Premiership, as well as the U.S. Open Cup and NWSL in the United States.

Through its first five weeks (April 11-May 14), Golazo Network showed nearly 100 live matches across over a dozen competitions.

When it’s not showing games, Golazo Network turns to its other studio show, “Box 2 Box,” for a more news-driven approach to covering the soccer world. It also shows original documentary films and series that often serve as test runs before they’re promoted to Paramount+.

And it’s not just the audience craving the content — those making it want it, too.

“I think we view this — the network as a whole and specifically ‘Morning Footy’ — for all of us being passionate soccer fans, as the opportunity of a lifetime,” says Nastri. “It’s something that we have truly been looking for our whole lives.”

“I think it’s so important for the growth of the sport for [U.S.] fans to be able to know what’s going on around the world.”

US officials believe Chinese hackers could still have access to sensitive US computer networks they’ve targeted in recent months as a top American cyber official told CNN he is concerned about the “scope and scale” of the activity.

The newly revealed Chinese government-backed hacking campaign, which targeted key US sectors like maritime and transportation networks, is “unacceptable” because the hackers sought access to networks that might allow them to disrupt critical services in the future, National Security Agency Director of Cybersecurity Rob Joyce said in an interview on Thursday.

US officials are still trying to verify that Chinese hackers have been kicked out of networks they’ve broken into during the monthslong campaign, Joyce said, adding that the NSA has been investigating the Chinese hacking effort since last year.

The Chinese hackers targeted an unnamed organization on the US Pacific territory of Guam as part of a likely effort to develop capabilities that could disrupt “critical communications infrastructure” between the US and Asia in the event of a crisis, Microsoft said in revealing the activity on Wednesday.

The alleged targeting of critical infrastructure in Guam adds to ongoing US concerns that China could be using its cyber capabilities in anticipation of a future conflict with the US in the Pacific.

The hackers have tried to burrow into many organizations with no apparent intelligence value and to “preposition” themselves in US computer networks for potential future operations, Joyce told CNN.

The US and its allies immediately amplified Microsoft’s findings on Wednesday and urged infrastructure operators to check their networks for compromise. The Chinese government denied the allegations and in turn accused the US of conducting hacking operations in China.

It’s a new front in tensions in cyberspace that have permeated the US-China relationship for years. It follows uproar in the US over the Chinese spy balloon that the Pentagon shot down in February.

Russia, too, has long sought footholds in US critical infrastructure, according to US officials and private experts. But Joyce – who has spent more than two decades at the NSA and has worked on offensive cyber operations – said the newly revealed Chinese activity stood out to him.

“I think the difference here is how brazen it is in scope and scale,” Joyce told CNN. “So, we need to empower everybody to be able to defend against it.”

Concerns over Taiwan

The NSA – a vast US electronic spying agency with a foreign mission – used its intelligence capabilities to study the Chinese hackers’ tools and to verify the sensitive US infrastructure they targeted, Joyce said. In addition to maritime and transportation organizations, the hackers went after US government agencies and manufacturing and construction firms, among other targets, according to Microsoft.

“We assess this is prepositioning against critical infrastructure – more broadly than just [potentially] interrupting communications,” Joyce told CNN, adding: “We do agree with the Microsoft assessment.”

The targeting of Guam is of particular concern because it plays a key part in US military efforts to counter and deter China’s territorial ambitions in the Pacific. The US Marine Corps in January chose Guam as the place to open its first new base in 70 years, a facility that officials expect to host 5,000 Marines.

Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin told CNN on Thursday that “US military mobility for the Indo-Pacific is absolutely vital to our security” while expressing concern about the new alleged Chinese hacking operation.

US officials are concerned that Chinese hackers have created footholds in Taiwan’s critical infrastructure that Beijing may use to disrupt key services like electricity in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, a senior US defense official told reporters in March.

“There is virtually no question that, if the US were to get directly involved in a conflict with China over Taiwan, China would seek use its cyber capabilities to ensure that US forces are less effective in combat,” said Jamil N. Jaffer, founder and executive director of the National Security Institute at George Mason University’s law school.

“Given this, the access to critical infrastructure that China is developing in Guam and elsewhere represents an important and growing risk to the ability of the US to effectively respond in the case of a conflict with China,” Jaffer told CNN.

Taiwanese cybersecurity experts saw a familiar foe in the Microsoft report and immediately began checking their systems for signs of compromise.

“We saw similar techniques and attacks in Taiwan,” said Sung-ting Tsai, CEO of Taiwanese cybersecurity firm TeamT5. Tsai said his analysts are still investigating but haven’t matched the hackers mentioned by Microsoft to a known Chinese hacking group.

The longer game some Chinese hackers are playing in Taiwan is to “penetrate into the target networks [and] environments, try everything to make themselves invisible, stay in the critical systems, then make disruptions when they need,” Tsai told CNN.

Owners of Ford EVs Will Get Access to Tesla Supercharger Network - Car and Driver

Ford announced late this afternoon that it is teaming with Tesla to help expand the electric-vehicle charging infrastructure for U.S. customers.
Now owners of Ford EVs including the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning (pictured above, with CEO Jim Farley) can use 12,000-plus Tesla Supercharger fast-chargers for their vehicles.
Ford will also provide built-in connectors as standard on its EVs starting in 2025, meaning Ford EV owners won't need a special adapter to be able to use the Superchargers.

In a late-day announcement on Thursday, May 25, Ford said it has cemented an agreement that will give Ford EV owners access to the Tesla Supercharger network starting in the spring of 2024.

In the announcement, Ford president and CEO Jim Farley said this will more than double the number of fast-chargers in the U.S. and Canada for owners of Ford EVs including the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit, and F-150 Lightning pickup. Currently they have about 10,000 fast-chargers available through Ford's BlueOval Charge Network, and more than 12,000 Superchargers will be added under the agreement.

In what is almost as surprising a development, Ford said its EVs will also get an adapter to allow them to use the Superchargers. Starting in 2025, a connector developed by Tesla will be built into new Ford EVs, the company said. The Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector on Ford EVs fitted with a Combined Charging System (CCS) port will allow the vehicles to be used with Tesla V3 Superchargers. A Ford spokesperson called this connector "smaller and lighter" to provide "a superior experience for customers."

Oakland County brings 3D printing to small businesses

Oakland County has plans to create the largest network of 3D printers in the world -- and they're helping small businesses along the way.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (FOX 2) - The future of manufacturing may lie in 3D printing and Oakland County is making a massive investment in the technology – with a desire to create the largest 3D printing network in the world.

As manufacturing is changing, a culture shift is coming – moving from traditional manufacturing to 3D printing. According to Forbes in 2021, the 3D printing sector reached $10.6 billion in revenue with a trajectory climbing.

"I was familiar with it as a technology. I was not familiar with how easy it was to utilize," said Tammy Packard, the owner of Unique Short Tree.

Packard took over the business just before the pandemic in 2020. She was familiar with 3D printing but it wasn't until she integrated the tech into her business that she discovered just how much it would change things.

"We take a look at it, we print it, we put it in to see if it fits. If it doesn't, you make the change and we can print it. You’re looking at hours or days not months or years,' Packard said.

Packard got the 3D printer through Project Diamond, an Oakland County initiative that was born during the pandemic and was meant to accelerate digital transformation among Michigan manufacturers and strengthen supply chains for producing PPE. Now it has a new purpose – becoming the world's largest 3D printing network.

"Project Diamond phase 2 is the definition of making things in America," said Board of Commissioners Chair Dave Woodward. "Making certain that our manufacturing sector which built the middle class, is able to flourish regardless of the challenges of the economy on the horizon."

Oakland County and Automation Alley worked together and can now say another $15 million is being invested to help small and medium-sized manufacturers apply additive – or 3D printing -- to their manufacturing.

The money comes from the American Rescue Plan Act and the funding amounts to 250 printers. The county can purchase them and then provide to businesses in Oakland County, some of which are free or with some shared costs.

The goal is to get 40% of small manufacturers in the county to get one.

Intel launches Agilex FPGA for smart networking - Network World

Intel has launched a field-programmable gate array—Agilex 7 with R-Tile—that features PCIe 5.0 and CXL capabilities for processing networking workloads.

The Agilex FPGA is primarily used in smartNICs that offload the processing of network traffic from the CPU, thus freeing up CPU capacity for other tasks. Intel sees Agilex playing a role in data centers, telecommunications, and financial services, among other high-traffic industries.

Agilex is a rebranding of Intel’s Stratix and Arria FPGA lines that involves renumbering, with Agilex 3 being the low-end and Agilex 9 the high-end. So Agilex 7 is not the seventh generation of the chip but is the second most powerful processor in the family.

With this release, Agilex has undergone quite a change. The previous version was a PCI Express 4.0 product, built on a single chip design at 14nm. This new version supports PCI Express 5.0, and uses a chiplet design that breaks down the silicon into multiple smaller chips on the 7nm process.

Agilex 7 with R-Tile has 116Gbps of transceiver bandwidth, the fastest throughput yet among Intel FPGAs. It also supports hard IP, which means functions like memory controllers and digital signal processors are hard coded into the silicon, rather than soft IP, which is programmed. The IP can’t be modified, but it also performs much faster and reduces design time for developing and deploying products.

The R-Tile is part of the new chiplet design where the chiplets are connected by a high-speed interconnect. R-Tile is a companion chip to the FPGA that specifically supports high-speed PCI Express connections and integrates with CPUs to accelerate high-performance computing workloads.

Agilex 7 also supports CXL 1.1 and eventually 2.0 when it ships. CXL is a high-speed interconnect that allows direct memory-to-memory communication for data sharing without having to go through CPUs and buses. Intel is saying that Agilex 7 builds now support CXL 1.1, and will support selected CLX 2.0 features pending validation, interoperability, and qualification with future CPUs.

Agilex 7 is shipping to OEM customers now.

Twitter Is a Far-Right Social Network - The Atlantic

Twitter has long been described, even by its most ardent users, as a hellsite. But under Elon Musk, Twitter has evolved into a platform that is indistinguishable from the wastelands of alternative social-media sites such as Truth Social and Parler. It is now a right-wing social network.

In December, I argued that if we are to judge Musk strictly by his actions as Twitter’s owner, it is accurate to call him a far-right activist. As a public figure, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the right’s culture war against progressivism—which he refers to as “the woke mind virus”—and his $44 billion Twitter purchase can easily be seen as an explicitly political act to advance this specific ideology. Now the site itself has unquestionably transformed under his leadership into an alternative social-media platform—one that offers a haven to far-right influencers and advances the interests, prejudices, and conspiracy theories of the right wing of American politics.

Earlier today, NBC News reported that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is slated to kick off his 2024 presidential campaign in a Twitter Spaces event with Musk. Twitter, quite literally, is a launch pad for right-wing political leaders. Also today, The Daily Wire, the conservative-media juggernaut that is home to Ben Shapiro as well as the political commentators Matt Walsh and Michael Knowles, who are known for arguing against trans rights, announced it would bring its entire slate of podcasts to Twitter starting next week. And earlier this month, the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson announced that he would take his prime-time-show format—a dog-whistling broadcast style known for its fearmongering and bigotry——to Musk’s platform.

Both Carlson and certain Daily Wire hosts have been deplatformed elsewhere—Carlson, of course, only recently lost his sinecure on cable, and Walsh had his popular YouTube channel demonetized over his transphobic commentary. And although they reportedly haven’t brokered official deals with the platform, Carlson and The Daily Wire will likely make use of Twitter’s new subscription features and ad-revenue sharing to monetize their audiences.

This should feel familiar. Twitter is essentially following the playbook of platforms like Rumble, which used to be the go-tos for canceled and deplatformed right-wingers seeking a soft landing and the promise of revenue. Like Rumble, which pivoted from a struggling YouTube alternative into a full-fledged far-right platform in the late 2010s, Twitter appears to be dipping into the well of popular right-wing shock jocks as a way to revive the financially adrift website.

The move makes sense. In just a few months, Musk has actively worked to elevate a particular right-wing, anti-woke ideology. He has reinstated legions of accounts that were previously banned for violating Twitter’s rules and has emboldened trolls, white-nationalist accounts, and January 6 defendants. Musk’s own rhetoric has moved from trolling to dog whistling to outright conspiracy peddling, and it has intensified in recent months, culminating in his recent anti-Semitic remarks about George Soros. A stroll through Musk’s replies on the site reveals the extent to which one of the richest men in the world spends his time replying to far-right influencers and nodding in approval to their racist memes.

A social-media platform will always reflect the values of its owners, and Twitter’s credo is nearly identical to that of the lesser-known alt-tech sites. Despite appearing to cave to the demands of autocratic governments and censoring links to competing platforms, Musk has attempted to position himself as a free-speech absolutist, similar to his right-wing-activist peers. Before shutting down after a failed acquisition by Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), Parler billed itself as the “free-speech social platform.” Truth Social, a website backed in part by Donald Trump, says it encourages “an open, free, and honest global conversation without discriminating on the basis of political ideology.” This language is indistinguishable from the way that Carlson spoke of Musk’s Twitter, arguing that “there aren’t many platforms left that allow free speech,” and that the site is “the last big one remaining in the world.” If it acts like a right-wing website and markets itself as a right-wing website, it just might be a right-wing website.

Twitter has so fully assumed the role of a far-right platform that it might be killing its competitors. When Parler shut down in April, its parent company noted that “no reasonable person believes that a Twitter clone just for conservatives is a viable business any more.” Left unspoken is the reason: Twitter has become a right-wing echo chamber.

If Musk weren’t too preoccupied lapping up approval from trolls, reactionaries, and Dogecoin enthusiasts—a few of the constituencies left on his site that still seem to adore him—the Parler statement should worry him. Right-wing alt-tech platforms may attract investors and a flood of indignant new users with persecution complexes, but they are, ultimately, bad businesses. That’s precisely because they lack the one thing that fuels far-right discourse: a way to own the libs. A culture war is no fun if there’s no actual conflict, and although some journalists and pundit diehards remain, many of Twitter’s prolific users are posting less and on different platforms. Social-media platforms that cater to the right’s ideology eventually become tired and predictable—the result of the same loud people shaking their fist at digital clouds. History has shown us that there are plenty of ways a social network can die, but the quickest way is boredom.
