Helium Developers Mull Migration of Crypto Wireless Network to Solana - Decrypt

In brief

  • Crypto-fueled wireless network Helium is considering a move from its own custom blockchain to Solana.
  • Helium’s core developers have proposed the migration, which will be voted on beginning September 12.

Helium, the blockchain platform that uses crypto token incentives to fuel decentralized wireless networks, may soon undergo a significant transformation if a newly-revealed proposal passes: it could move from its own blockchain to Solana.

Published today, the HIP 70 proposal details why Helium’s core developers want to move the network from its own bespoke chain to Solana, a leading smart contract platform used for decentralized apps (dapps), NFTs, and decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. In short, the developers think it will improve Helium’s speed, stability, and ability to serve more users.

“Solana offers significant benefits to Helium that include, but are not limited to, scale, community, and composability,” reads a blog post from The Helium Foundation. “This change will be momentous in scope, impact, and benefit to the Helium network and its users.”

Under the proposal, the Helium network would move all of its tokens—HNT, IOT, MOBILE, and DC (Data Credits)—from its own blockchain to Solana. It would also rely on oracles, or third-party data sources not on the blockchain, to manage Helium’s proof-of-coverage infrastructure and data transfer accounting functionality.

“The Helium community will gain a thriving developer ecosystem of thousands of developers worldwide who are working on applications that are only possible on Solana due to its fast and cheap transactions,” the proposal says.

Helium is a distributed wireless network that offers users crypto tokens as rewards for sharing their home internet service with a wider community. For example, a user can run a Helium node (or hotspot) attached to their modem or router, and then earn crypto tokens by securing the network and allowing nearby devices to share their connection.

The platform first launched with a network designed for internet of things (IoT) devices like trackers and sensors, and has thus far attracted more than 935,000 active node operators, according to current data. More recently, Helium launched a 5G network built for phones, tablets, and other devices, which has about 3,300 nodes online at present.

The Helium Foundation and Nova Labs—a startup composed of the network’s founders and some core developers—recently announced plans to embrace a “network of networks” approach and expand beyond the original HNT reward token. With IOT, MOBILE, and other future tokens, Helium aims to incorporate a wider range of decentralized wireless protocols.

In the post announcing the Solana migration proposal, Helium’s developers said that when they first launched the network, there were few layer-1 blockchain platforms and it made the most sense to build their own. But as the network has scaled, they believe that it makes sense to embrace an open-source platform like Solana, which is built to handle large numbers of transactions.

“With the massive maturity that Helium has seen, so too has the blockchain and crypto ecosystem matured with it,” the post reads. “There is now a myriad of L1 options to build on. Rather than spend time and effort improving Helium’s L1, it became clear that the Helium community could benefit from the developments and shared resources from the larger industry.”

Also according to the proposal, a larger share of HNT reward tokens will flow to node operators, or miners, following the move to Solana, with a 6.85% increase over the current model. The proposal claims that the redistribution will push more than 2 million additional HNT to miners over the first two years, or more than $11.1 million at the current price.

The Helium Foundation will hold a token-based community vote on the proposal beginning on September 12 and ending September 18. No timeline was revealed for the planned migration, should the proposal pass.

Helium recently faced controversy when a pair of claimed brand partners—cloud software giant Salesforce and ride-sharing scooter startup Lime—said that they were not associated with the crypto wireless network.

A Nova Labs representative told Decrypt that Helium would adopt a “more rigorous” process of determining official partnerships. Helium co-founder Amir Haleem tweeted at the time that the network’s developers had “verbal approvals” from the firms that disputed the partnerships, but that it would institute a more formal approach to securing marketing approvals.

Editor's note: this article has been updated to clarify the benefits of the redistribution to miners.

Tron Network Energy Use Matches That of 15 US Households: CCRI Report - Decrypt

The Tron network’s annual electricity consumption is equivalent to that of just 15 U.S. households, according to a report prepared by the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute.

The commissioned report produced on behalf of the Tron network found that as of July 2022, Tron’s annual electricity consumption stands at 162,868 kWh.

Per the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average annual electricity consumption of a U.S. household was 10,715 kWh in 2020, meaning that the Tron network uses just over 15 U.S. households’ worth of energy each year.

Yearly energy consumption for blockchain networks including Tron. Source: CCRI

Bitcoin’s energy consumption currently stands at 94.47 TWh, per the most recent figures from the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index—meaning that Tron uses less than 0.001% of the energy consumed by the proof-of-work Bitcoin network.

According to the CCRI study, the annual energy consumption of a single node on the Tron network averages out at 443.78 kWh, with a lower bound of 147.17 kWh and an upper bound of 1,081.86 kWh.

The CCRI notes that this figure is a “best guess that captures the consumption of the average node best for the network,” based on the variety of hardware setups used by validators and full nodes on the Tron network.

Flying high

The report also found that Tron’s yearly carbon footprint, based on the average carbon intensity of the countries in which Tron nodes are located, amounts to 69.47 tCO2e. That’s equivalent to roughly eleven business class flights from Munich to San Francisco and back again.

Yearly carbon footprint of Tron and other blockchain networks. Source: CCRI

According to CCRI’s analysis, Tron’s carbon footprint is roughly three times lower than that of proof-of-stake networks Avalanche and Algorand, four times lower than that of Cardano and 13 times lower than that of Solana. CCRI notes that a direct comparison between Tron and these networks is, however, limited by the earlier time points of their analyses, conducted in August to October 2021.

Tron’s Delegated Proof of Stake model

Unlike the energy-intensive proof-of-work consensus mechanism used by Bitcoin and (for the time being) Ethereum, Tron uses a delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) mechanism to achieve consensus.

Proof-of-work networks such as Bitcoin are maintained by miners, who compete to perform computationally-taxing puzzles in order to win the right to add a block to the blockchain.

That has led to a computer hardware arms race among miners, who initially used computer processing units (CPU) to mine Bitcoin, before moving on to more powerful graphics processing units (GPUs) and finally dedicated ASIC miners. Each generation of more powerful mining hardware, of course, uses more electricity.

Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto saw the network’s energy use as an acceptable cost, given that, “The utility of the exchanges made possible by Bitcoin will far exceed the cost of electricity used.”

But networks such as Tron dispute that notion, opting instead for the much less energy-intensive proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. In proof-of-stake networks, validator nodes lock up cryptocurrency for the right to verify transactions in a block, and secure the associated fees. According to a 2021 study by University College London, proof-of-stake networks use several orders of magnitude less energy than proof-of-work networks such as Bitcoin.

Tron’s DPoS consensus mechanism evolves the proof-of-stake model. Holders of its native coin TRX stake their cryptocurrency to elect 27 “super representatives,” nodes whose job is to validate transactions and create new blocks. By delegating their TRX to a super representative, holders receive a share of the 32 TRX rewards generated by that node for validating a block. The network’s kept secure as the voting process is ongoing; bad actors can have their super representative status stripped from them.

As well as keeping the Tron network’s energy use and carbon footprint to a minimum, Tron also claims that its DPoS consensus mechanism allows for fast transaction speeds, a fully decentralized network, and promotes high levels of community engagement through its voting process.

Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers finalizing restructured contract to keep QB in San Francisco - NFL.com

In a surprising twist, Jimmy Garoppolo's time in San Francisco is not over, and he will remain with the 49ers as an experienced backup to Trey Lance.

NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Monday that the 49ers and Garoppolo are finalizing a new contract that will make him the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL. Garoppolo's new deal is worth $6.5 million fully guaranteed with incentives that can push it to close to $16 million, Rapoport and Garafolo added. The reworked deal also will lower Garoppolo's 2022 salary-cap number from $26.95 million to around $8.5 million.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported that Garoppolo's contract also includes a no-trade clause and a no-franchise tag clause. Thus, the QB controls where he goes and will be a free agent after this season.

Monday's new development arrives after a prolonged waiting period in which the veteran quarterback underwent shoulder surgery and spent all of training camp on the 49ers' roster rehabbing.

San Francisco traded up to No. 3 overall in the 2021 draft to select Lance, sitting him behind Garoppolo for most of the rookie's first season before officially handing the keys to the franchise over to the youngster.

Garoppolo knew of the 49ers' succession plan and bid farewell to San Francisco following the 49ers' heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game, but his shoulder procedure complicated matters. As the quarterback carousel turned in many NFL cities, Garoppolo could only watch from afar while recovering, and San Francisco ultimately could not find a proper deal to move him elsewhere via trade.

While most everyone expected San Francisco to either trade or release the veteran quarterback, the 49ers are instead content with keeping the trusted veteran who once led San Francisco to a Super Bowl as a possible insurance policy for Lance, the second-year quarterback who enters 2022 with plenty to prove.

Garoppolo arrived in San Francisco, a team that was in desperate need for a franchise QB, via trade with the New England Patriots in the middle of the 2017 season. He stepped into the role and played well enough to draw a five-year contract worth $137.5 million, establishing himself as the face of the club's future under center.

Jimmy G thrived when healthy, posting a win-loss record of 31-14 as San Francisco's starting quarterback, including a 13-3 season in 2019 that saw the 49ers reach Super Bowl LIV. It was that game, though, that revealed his ceiling as San Francisco's quarterback, as the 49ers could not hold onto their lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth quarter, losing 31-20. One key play -- an overthrown pass to an open Emmanuel Sanders on third and 10 -- typified Garoppolo's tenure with the team, but didn't prompt the 49ers to find his replacement.

Garoppolo's inability to stay healthy ultimately led to his demotion in San Francisco. After playing in all 16 games in 2019, Garoppolo appeared in just six contests due to injury in 2020, undercutting San Francisco's hopes of repeating as NFC champions and forcing 49ers management to find another option in case of emergency. That option arrived with the selection of Lance, a player San Francisco believes has the potential to get the 49ers over the hump and above all, keep the team competitive simply by being available more often than Garoppolo.

The 30-year-old, meanwhile, can continue his shoulder rehab and prepare for a season spent as the next man up, but only when needed. Garoppolo still has plenty of football ahead of him, provided he can avoid the injury bug that has too often interrupted his career. Instead of potentially finding a new opportunity elsewhere, he'll spend 2022 with the team he knows best – he'll just do so in a backup role.

Garoppolo can chase such a new opportunity after the 2022 season, and if we've learned anything from the last two offseasons, there will be jobs available. The biggest question mark remaining will be whether Garoppolo can stay healthy enough to justify a new team's pursuit of him, and no one will know for certain until he completes a season without incident. That time won't come until after 2022, though – or until a team becomes desperate enough to call the 49ers to inquire about Garoppolo.

New discovery means dolphins form largest social network outside of humans - FIU News

Long-thought to be a unique characteristic of human societies, researchers now say some dolphins can actually form multiple levels of alliances among their societies.

People establish strategic, cooperative relationships at different social levels for a variety of reasons including economic advantage, international trade and military operations. For male bottlenose dolphins living in Shark Bay, Australia, the motivation is a little less complex — the ladies. These dolphins actually form at least three different levels of cooperative relationships between groups to increase male access to females, according to the new study led by Richard Connor, a Florida International University biologist and professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and Stephanie King, an associate professor from the University of Bristol.

The male dolphins in Shark Bay form first-order alliances of two or three males to cooperatively pursue consortships with individual females. Their second-order alliances can include as few as four and as many as 14 unrelated males to compete with other alliances over access to females. Their third-order alliances occur between cooperating second-order alliances. The research team analyzed association and consortship data to model the structure of alliances among 121 adult male Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, demonstrating the dolphins have the largest known alliance network outside of humans.

A key finding of the study is the importance of intergroup cooperation for male success. Intergroup cooperation in humans was thought to be unique and dependent upon two other features that distinguish humans from chimpanzees — the evolution of pair bonds and parental care by males. However, Connor said the research shows intergroup alliances can actually emerge without these features and from a social and mating system that is more like chimpanzees. According to King, this means cooperation among groups is more important than overall alliance size to increase access to females. Long story short, collaborative dolphins have greater reproductive success.

The research was published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on the heels of the 40thanniversary of when Connor first began dolphin research in Shark Bay and the 30th anniversary of a major research study that announced the discovery of the dolphins forming two levels of alliances there. That research was also published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Simon Allen, a senior lecturer at the University of Bristol, Michael Krützen, head of the Anthropology Institute at the University of Zurich, and William B. Sherwin, a professor at the University of New South Wales, also contributed to the study.

NFL Network snubbing Aaron Donald draws ire from unexpected places - Ramblin' Fan

Players, coaches, and administrative staff will be the first to tell you that the LA Rams are a very close NFL organization. The players, coaches, and even the front office staff not only cooperate, communicate, and collaborate at a level often unseen at other NFL organizations, but everyone genuinely likes and appreciates one another.

There is a reason why the LA Rams fanbase has adopted the term Ramily to describe themselves. Much like the team these fans support, it’s a bond that is greater than you might expect. And that bond surfaces when one of their own is snubbed or threatened.

Fans draw their example from the team, and the team is powered on this front by the coaching staff. The Rams coaching staff are not only some of the best in the NFL, but they are also some of the nicest and most approachable coaches as well. But when it comes to turning water into wine, you need to look no further than  LA Rams defensive run coordinator and defensive line coach Eric Henderson.

Each season, Coach Henny welcomes talented but raw NFL hopefuls and coaches them up into some of the most productive NFL players around. He is fiercely demanding of his players but in a tough love sort of way. He is also fiercely defensive of his group.

The latest example of that occured when the NFL Network released its NFL Top 100 list:

Almost shockingly, the list did not name Aaron Donald as the Top NFL player. Instead, it was the is-he-retired-or-isn’t-he quarterback from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tom Brady.  While I won’t argue that a player at Brady’s age starting as an NFL quarterback isn’t a venerable achievement, there is a far cry from a guy who is routinely facing overwhelming odds to get to the quarterback, and yet continues to do so.

Coach Henderson incensed reaction

That shocking decision led to this:

But Coach Henderson is not the only member of the LA Rams organization that noticed that glaring sleight. The LA Rams Twitter account also noticed, and was quick to comment as well:

The fact that Aaron Donald came in at second on any NFL list after the tremendous season he had just completed in 2021 is mind-blowing. But the fact that he comes in as a runner-up to a player who was not even certain about playing in 2022 is a bit more than surprising.

The LA Rams just renegotiated Aaron Donald’s contract to compensate him at the level at which he plays. The last time that happened, in 2018, he proceeded to put up arguably the best NFL season of his career. Now, he not only has a brand new contract that ensures his financial security to motivate him, but he has this latest ranking to give him a special motivation to play with a chip on his shoulder.

Look out NFL quarterbacks. Here comes LA Rams Aaron Donald, and I don’t think he’s in a very good mood.

Colts Running Back Jonathan Taylor Ranked No. 5 On NFL Network's Top 100 Players Of 2022 - Colts.com

Two weeks before the 2022 season kicks off, Colts running back Jonathan Taylor earned one final accolade from his spectacular 2021 season.

Taylor was announced as the fifth-best player in the league on NFL Network's Top 100 Player of 2022 rankings revealed Sunday night. The annual rankings are voted on by players, who had an up-close look as Taylor rampaged across the NFL for 1,811 yards and 20 total touchdowns in 2021.

Taylor was a unanimous first-team AP All-Pro, won the Bert Bell Award and even garnered some MVP discussion – rare for a running back in today's NFL – during his record-setting sophomore season. At the age of 22, Taylor became the youngest player in NFL history to amass 2,000 yards from scrimmage and score 20 total touchdowns in a season.

Also in 2021: The 552-yard gap between Taylor (1,811 rushing yards) and the No. 2 rusher in the NFL (Nick Chubb – 1,259 yards) was the largest between the league's top and second-leading rusher since 2009.

Taylor is joined by Colts teammates Kenny Moore II (No. 82), DeForest Buckner (No. 66), Quenton Nelson (No. 28) and Shaquille Leonard (No. 18) on this year's list.
