The Future Office Could Be Your Living Room. Here's How to Equip Workers with Proper Ergonomic Support - Workers Comp Forum

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

ErgoExpo kicks off with a virtual general session designed to continue to ergonomic conversation on what the future holds for employees working from home in the era of COVID.

COVID-19 hit employees hard as most of the workforce was required to transition to work-from-home.

But perhaps nothing hit employees harder than the fact that the ratio of employees to facilities immediately became 1:1.

It was hard enough to keep employees up-to-date with ergonomic practices in the office environment, but now? Nearly impossible. Or so you may think…

Though we are not alone in this unfortunate turn of events, the pandemic infringed on our ability to meet in person for the 2020 National Ergonomics Conference. But kicking off on August 26, ergonomic experts Jonathan Puleio, Linda Miller, David Damico and Kibibi Springs did not disappoint on delivering content every remote employee can turn into progress and productivity.

In the general virtual session that marked the start of a monthly series of ErgoExpo sessions to be delivered throughout 2021, “COVID-19 and the Future of the Office” delivered on everything from at-home ergonomic assessments to wearables to emotional well-being, all catered to the home environment.

What’s Changed?

According to Jonathan Puleio, global vice president, Humanscale Consulting, 58% of America’s workforce — equivalent to 85 million people — are currently working from home. Twenty-five to thirty percent of this number will continue to work from home even after the effects of the pandemic subside.

While 86% of employees report feeling more productive from home, the real challenge lies with employers:

  • As previously stated, the ratio of employees to work facilities immediately became 1:1, making it nearly impossible to know the needs of each employee and deliver on those needs in a timely fashion.

  • Facilities’ teams have little to no visibility into the home environments.

  • Ergonomic equipment is often incompatible with home furniture.

“I feel strongly that there is a lot of room to innovate in this area,” said Puleio. “A software assisted approach is really the way to go as opposed to accommodating work-from-home employees based on the actual need versus the perceived need.”

Administering Ergonomics Assessments

Dr. Linda Miller, president and certified occupational therapist/ergonomist, EWI Works

Before the pandemic, only 7.5 million Americans worked from home, which is a small number in comparison to today.

“When we looked at the actual stats, one-third of the total workforce transitioned to the home office, and we had very little time to prepare,” said Linda Miller, president and certified occupational therapist/ergonomist at EWI Works.

Now, the challenge lies in setting boundaries between work and home environments when they are confined to the same space.

According to Miller, many employers lack an employee-process from an ergonomist perspective, let alone a process that assists in a remote setting. Even when employers have equipment to recommend, obtaining equipment has become more difficult due to the pandemic disrupting supply chains.

In the beginning of quarantine, it seemed as though telecommuting was a temporary fix, but many employers want to wait to return to a work environment until there is a vaccine for COVID-19, or — possibly — even longer. Therefore, a work setting that is not ergonomic-friendly could cause major injuries in the interim.

“We’re not doing a lot of proactive work; we’re doing a lot of reactive work where people are experiencing a lot of shoulder, upper back and neck issues … things are becoming much more ‘talk-based,’ so it’s changing the nature in how we deliver assessments,” Miller said.

With this in mind, assessing the psychological work environment is as important as the physical. Suddenly, employees may be sharing work spaces with spouses, roommates or even their children, and problems can arise in those scenarios.

“We’re not only focusing on the physical, but we’re really focusing on some of those psychological risks as well,” said Miller. “There are a lot of differences in anxiety and readiness to be back in the workplace. Some people are very excited to be back and others are not.”

Wearable Technology

We all wish that we could click our heels three times and the obstacles of the pandemic would be nothing but a distant memory.

“Similar to Dorothy and Toto’s experience, today’s offices aren’t where they used to be. Fortunately for Dorothy, when she woke up, things were back to normal,” said David Damico, vice president and senior ergonomics consultant for Marsh Risk Consulting.

And while wearables usually apply to the labor workforce instead of remote, technology is once again proving to be on our side in such trying times.

In fact, if technology hadn’t advanced so much over the last two decades, the pandemic may have taken an even more ravenous toll on the economy. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, the telecommuting workforce increased by 100-150% between 2005 and 2010.

With this in mind, exoskeletons and posture sensing devices have been recognized for their high potential in reducing musculoskeletal disorders in this new reality.

“As our future offices provide connectivity to all things and flexibility to where and how work is done, ergonomists have to find ways to support the prevention [of] musculoskeletal disorders in an office environment without being present,” said Damico.

“Wearables give us a means of collecting some of this data by monitoring some of their associated risk.”

Managing Emotional Well-Being

Kibibi Springs, workplace well-being and knowledge lead, Eastern U.S. and New York City, Herman Miller

When the pandemic took hold, everything was entirely overwhelming, and it was impossible to know where to start with questions regarding what would happen to the workplace.

Subconsciously, however, our minds were racing:

  • How do we adjust?
  • How do we balance engagement and well-being?
  • How do we prevent burnout?
  • How do we get ahead of the implications of long-term isolation?

In addition to adjusting to our new work realities, we also had to adjust to our new social realities, which likely eliminated commuting and evening gym sessions. There is a direct correlation between exercise and our mood, so a disruption to a healthy physical routine likely causes disruptions to a healthy mindset.

“Movement really matters to our mood and our mindset. We all know this, but what we do about it is a different story,” said Kibibi Springs, workplace well-being and knowledge lead, Eastern U.S. and New York City, Herman Miller. “We had to get creative about how we maintained movement and well-being.”

Solutions to this included regular self-assessments regarding mental health, scheduling breaks throughout the day, and designing employee workflow in a way that encourages movement.

The general theme of the pandemic has been that there is no straight-line answer to anything — at least not in the near future. With the help of these speakers, building on the conversation will only contribute to a more ergonomic-centered future in everything that we do. &

Marvel's Avengers Deluxe Preorder Items Showcase & How to Equip - GosuNoob.com

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

Deluxe and preorder items in Marvel’s Avengers are several outfit packs and nameplate packs that you can unlock and equip in the game. The preorder and deluxe Marvel’s Avengers items include the Obsidian Outfit pack, the Marvel Legacy outfit pack, and the corresponding nameplates. Now, some of you might be wondering how to unlock and equip all your bonus items that you’ve paid good money for, and what they’ll look like. Well, that’s exactly what we’ll be showing you in our Marvel’s Avengers Deluxe Preorder Items Showcase & How to Equip guide.

Where to Find Deluxe Preorder Items – How to Equip

To equip your preorder and deluxe items in Marvel’s Avengers, all you have to do is go into the menu and scroll over to the Cosmetics tab. Use R1 and L1 on PS4 and whatever the equivalent is on your platform. It has several subcategories that you can flick through with R2 and L2, namely, Outfits, Emotes, Takedowns, and Nameplates. You can switch between different costumes and other stuff as you will. Plus, you have access to all of these items pretty much from the get-go, which is neat.

Find your deluxe & preorder items under Cosmetics

Well, that’s not entirely true. All the preorder and deluxe items in Marvel’s Avengers do unlock immediately after you boot the game up. You don’t have to do absolutely anything to redeem them. However, in single player, you do first have to go through the intro section before you can gain access to them. Yeah, you might have assumed that the game will make you put in a little work for the stuff, but nope, it’s right there for your convenience.

Marvel’s Avengers Preorder Deluxe Items Showcase

We’re going to start the showcase with the most universal of these items, the preorder nameplate. It’s the same for all heroes, so there’s no dilemma there. Here’s what it looks like.

Then, there’s the “Talk to the Hand” emote that’s exclusive for Ms Marvel. Also, it’s exclusive to the PlayStation digital edition, because reasons. We can’t really do it justice via a screenshot, but you’ll get the idea.

Now, for the really good stuff, aka the preorder and deluxe costumes. Below, you’ll see screenshots of Ms Marvel in her Greater Good legacy outfit and Obsidian outfit, along with the Obsidian nameplate. We figured we’d put her first, since shes’ the first character we get to play as.

Next up, we have Hulk. His preorder outfit is basically the results of Bruce Banner turning into the angry green colossus before he had the appropriate clothes. And the Obsidian version is a more clean-cut version of him with silver pants.

This section of the game is under construction. We’ll keep adding more screenshots as we go.

WWE Payback 2020: How to watch, start time, full card and WWE Network - CNET

screen-shot-2020-08-24-at-12-45-54-pm.png

Roman Reigns returned at SummerSlam. Payback will likely be built around him.

WWE

The tagline to SummerSlam was "You'll never see it coming." It turns out "it" was Roman Reigns, as The Big Dog returned at the show to take down both The Fiend and Braun Strowman. Reigns may be your next Universal Champion, as on Sunday he'll take part in a triple threat no-holds-barred match with The Fiend and Strowman with the title on the line. And it comes after Reigns aligned himself with Paul Heyman on SmackDown. Scandal!

Drew McIntyre won't defend his WWE Championship on the show. Instead, Randy Orton will face NXT callup Keith Lee. Dominik and Rey Mysterio will also tag team against Seth Rollins and Murphy.

Start times

Unlike every PPV since March, Payback won't take place in WWE's Performance Center. As noted, it'll air from Orlando's Amway Center, known as WWE's "ThunderDome." The main card starts both days at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. If you're a paid WWE Network subscriber -- at $9.99 a month -- you can watch Payback live for no extra cost. Otherwise, you'll need to contact your local cable provider.

Viewers in the UK will have to stay up late to watch Payback as the show starts midnight Sunday UK time. Payback starts for Australians at 9 a.m. AEST on Monday.

Match Card

  • No Holds Barred Universal Championship: "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman.
  • Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton.
  • Women's Tag Team Championship: Bayley and Sasha Banks (c) vs. Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler.
  • United States Championship match: Apollo Crews (c) vs. Bobby Lashley.

TIM to set clock ticking on Italy single network with KKR deal Monday - reuters.com

MILAN/ROME (Reuters) - Telecom Italia (TIM) is set to sign off on a landmark deal with U.S. fund KKR on Monday that could lay the groundwork for plans to create a single ultrafast broadband network promoted by the Italian government.

FILE PHOTO: Telecom Italia logo is seen at the headquarters in Rozzano neighbourhood of Milan, Italy, May 25, 2016. REUTERS/Stefano Rellandini

Rome is keen to create a single full-fibre network to close Italy’s digital divide with other European countries and wants TIM to merge assets with smaller state-backed rival Open Fiber to create a national champion eligible for grants from Europe’s Recovery Fund.

Earlier this month, TIM postponed to Aug. 31 a decision to sell 37.5% of its last-mile grid, FiberCop, to KKR for 1.8 billion euros ($2.1 billion) after the government asked for more time to broker the broad network agreement roping in Open Fiber.

But on Thursday the ruling coalition gave the go ahead to a Memorandum of Understanding setting out a road map for the creation of a high speed broadband network open equally to all operators and, crucially, acceptable to regulators.

“The last-mile deal with KKR is the launching pad for the much bigger deal further down the road,” said a source involved in the process.

Industry Minister Stefano Patuanelli said on Saturday such an infrastructure could be eligible for 6 billion euros of EU Recovery Fund money.

TIM and Open Fiber have been talking for over a year about ways of combining their assets, but negotiations have foundered on governance and regulation.

Former phone monopolist TIM wants majority control of any single network while Open Fiber insists it should be wholesale only and not under the control of an incumbent with a big retail business like TIM.

Under the government plan, TIM could initially own more than 50% but will not have a majority of board members and the final say on strategic issues will lie with state-lender CDP.

All market players should have equal access to the unified broadband network and its ownership structure should be open to newcomers, sources said.

CDP, which jointly controls Open Fiber with utility Enel, is TIM’s second-biggest shareholder after Vivendi. It controls Italy’s gas and power grids Snam and Terna.

Besides the deal with KKR, TIM’s board on Monday will give its backing to the government’s MoU, sources said, while TIM, KKR and CDP are set to negotiate an option for CDP to enter FiberCop capital.

At a later stage, and subject to prior regulatory clearance, the plan is to merge FiberCop and Open Fiber. TIM would then fold its primary network, connecting switching centres to street cabinets, into FiberCop, giving the new player the entire fixed-access network.

A source said CDP had also called a board on Monday to endorse the blueprint.

Enel is not expected to sign the MoU but sources said its CEO was onside with government plans.

FILE PHOTO: Trading information for KKR & Co is displayed on a screen on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., August 23, 2018. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid

The state-controlled utility will sell part of its stake to CDP to guarantee state control and can then sell the rest to whoever, a source close to the matter said.

Infrastructure fund Macquarie has already made a non-binding bid for all or part of Enel’s stake in Open Fiber valuing the whole group at almost 8 billion euros including debt. It is expected to table a binding offer in September, sources said.

PSA: CenturyLink outage takes down Amazon, Hulu, Playstation Network, etc for many users - 9to5Mac

If you’re waking up this morning finding that a lot of the services you use on the internet are not working, don’t worry, it’s not just you. Earlier this morning, an outage with CenturyLink has interrupted services for many across the world.

When I woke up this morning, I found my abode security system to be disconnected from Wi-Fi and connected to its LTE connection. I quickly noticed that I had several other services that didn’t seem to be working when connected to Wi-Fi.

I initially thought it was something with my local internet provider, but as the rest of the US began waking up, it became clear that the outage was widespread. Downdetector is reporting issues with Amazon, Starbucks, Chase, GoDaddy, Peloton, Venmo, and countless others.

Searching for Hulu on Twitter also shows many users are having difficulty accessing the service this morning. So it’s safe to say if you’re having issues with your internet this morning, it’s not just you.

CenturyLink purchased Level 3 in 2017, and it provides core IP, voice, video, and content delivery for many internet carriers in North America, Latin America, Europe, and parts of Asia.

New Study Highlights Natural Disaster's Impact on Global Agriculture Network - Food Tank

A recent study from Columbia University finds that a severe natural disaster could cause the near-total depletion of the United States’ food reserves. This loss may make the U.S. and other countries more vulnerable to future disasters.

Between 1980 and 2019 climate-related disasters increased by more than 100 percent, according to the International Disaster Database, Université catholique de Louvain – Brussels – Belgium. The study seeks to understand how a natural disaster comparable to the U.S. Dust Bowl – which caused a 36 percent decline in wheat production in the 1930s – would impact global agriculture trade.

The researchers conclude that 94 percent of the U.S. wheat reserves, held for emergency food supply, would be exhausted. It would also cut wheat exports in half.

Additional findings show that while the reserves are sufficient to fend off food insecurity initially, the U.S. and its trade partners would become extremely vulnerable to a future crisis of any size.

“With more extreme weather due to climate change, it is critical in the short term that we have safety nets in place for farmers and agricultural communities if they experience a sudden loss of crops,” Alison Heslin, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Scientist at Columbia University and Co-author of the study tells Food Tank.

To understand the effects of a natural disaster, the researchers used a food shock cascade model, an economic tool that simulates a food supply shortage. The model considers country-level wheat production, reserves, and trade data.

Heslin explains that agricultural reserves are essential in the disaster scenarios modeled in the study. They help ensure that sufficient food is available during extreme weather events and that food prices remain stable, according to the Institute for Agriculture & Trade Policy.

In order to be most effective, Heslin says that reserves should be composed of different crops. “A diverse profile of nutrient sources can serve to decrease risks from production shocks in a particular commodity or a particular region,” Heslin tells Food Tank.

She explains that U.S. reserves are also important for international food security. According to the study, the U.S. is central to the global food trade network, and supplies wheat to over 170 countries that have little to no reserves of their own.

She argues that these countries’ strong reliance on the U.S. makes their food systems vulnerable. To build resilience Heslin tells Food Tank, “Government support in food distribution or food subsidies would be critical to ensure that sufficient, nutritious food is available to all members of the population.”

While this study models the impacts of a natural disaster, Heslin believes it can also inform researchers’ understanding of the COVID-19 crisis. She says the pandemic and the resulting supply chain disruptions highlight shortfalls in the food system.

“[The study is] an opportunity for people to learn how concentrated and inflexible certain components of the food system are,” Heslin tells Food Tank. “Hopefully [that] leads to changes to ensure our food system is more dynamic in the face of future crises.”

Springboro to build $3.5M high-speed, fiber-optic network - Hamilton Journal News

ExploreFiber optic network to link 7 Dayton-area cities

The authority board also agreed to pay Kleingers Group up to $25,00 to design the “base map” for the network.

The city would lease space in city hall and connection to the network to up to five internet providers.

“We’re not looking to provide service. All we’re trying to do is bring in competition,” Pozzuto said.

On July 2, Pozzuto unveiled his plan for Springboro City Council.

“Smart Homes require Smart Cities,” Pozzuto said in his presentation. “Both require Smart Infrastructure.”

The network would give the city and other customers better internet access enabling residents and businesses “to fully perform multiple functions online at once.”

ExploreSpringboro urged to help fund new high-speed fiber network

“As more people work, study, play and create at home, the need for a proper digital roadway for the City magnifies,” Pozzuto continued.

The new cable network would have “greater bandwidth” than existing ones available in the city. It would also reduce problems with interference, according to the presentation.

For example, current copper coaxial cable handle six “pulls” of data before the signal weakens compared to 2.5 million for fiber, Pozzuto said. This translates to 25 seconds to download a two-hour high definition movie that current takes 32 to 72 minutes with current cable bandwidths.

None of three internet providers in the city provide this level of service, according to the presentation.

The fiber is to be installed through “micro-trenching,” minimizing disruption in the community during construction. Installation cost was estimated at $2.5 million.

Conduits through which providers are to run fiber would lead into neighborhoods in the city and unincorporated areas around it, including Clearcreek Twp.

ExploreArea cities recognized for ‘Smart City’ project

To compensate city users, township customers would pay 150 percent for the service, Pozzuto explained.

The first internet provider is expected to pay $100,000 a year.

“While revenue is important, I look at this more as a community development project,” Pozzuto said.

For the project, the city is also forming a partnership with the Miami Valley Educational Computer Association, based in Yellow Springs.

The association serves 31 school districts in Clark, Clinton, Greene, Highland, Fayette, Madison, Montgomery and Ross counties. It would build the system.

A Columbus company, Cologix, would provide the internet access.

The service is expected to help create good jobs, draw new companies and improve health care. The lifestyles of residents, including senior citizens and people with disabilities, are to be eased by minimizing the need for office visits.

Mayor John Agenbroad said the service could help the city develop 200 acres of commercial property.

“This is going to draw more people to live there,” Councilwoman Becky Iverson said after the presentation.

The city plans to sign contracts with the authority and Point Broadband, the first internet-service provider, in September. Construction is expected to take eight months to a year.

Local Chapter of National Action Network Brings Meaning of March to LA - Spectrum News 1

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The National Action Network is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the nation. It was founded by Reverend Al Sharpton, who is leading this year’s March on Washington in D.C.

In Los Angeles, members of the local chapter brought the meaning of the march to Inglewood, then watched together virtually.

What You Need To Know

  • The 57th commemoration of the March on Washington was lead by Reverend Al Sharpton Friday

  • Reverend Al Sharpton is the founder of the National Action Network

  • Members of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Action Network stayed behind to continue community outreach

  • Members participated in the March virtually online

The push for change nationally starts in each neighborhood. A lesson Rasheda Kilpatrick, policy director for the National Action Network (NAN), was taught by example at a young age.

“That’s really where I started to get my love for fighting in the community, which was hearing my parents talking about the significance of the March on Washington," Kilpatrick explained. "Knowing that I’m part of an organization that’s keeping that legacy alive is really important to me."

The National Action Network is the organization that partnered with the NAACP to host this year's 57th commemoration of the March on Washington in D.C.

Most members from the L.A. chapter flew there to attend in person, but Kilpatrick was one of the few who stayed home to hold down the fort. Every day, NAN partners with the World Central Kitchen to give out 1,800 meals in Inglewood for any family in need.

“NAN has always been big in the community, whether it’s for our free legal night, whether it’s helping feed the community, so this is why I’m here with NAN because action is our middle name and we do action in the community," Kilpatrick said.

It's a community Gloria Martin has been a part of since the first March on Washington. As the secretary of NAN, she has watched years pass and said 2020 doesn't look much different than 1963.

“People are just dying everyday for nothing. I cannot believe it. You know, like I said, nothing’s changed! 57 years later. Same thing! Just look at the last few months, at how many black people have been killed by police officers," said Martin.

One of them was her own niece.

“In Lancaster, last year in October. She’s sitting in her car. Absolutely, shot her in the head. It’s just crazy how this just keeps repeating itself," she said.

Her only hope for the future is the power of a vote for politicians with true intentions for small communities. Local policies Kilpatrick uses her law degree to push.

“Policy is actually what creates the change," she explained.

It's the same message NAN founder Reverend Al Sharpton spread in his speech at the 2020 March on Washington.

“We’re gonna meet you senators at the poll on November 3rd. Whether we got to mail in, walk in, ride in, crawl in, we want our bill passed," said Reverend Al Sharpton from the podium.

Kilpatrick organized a watch party for the L.A. chapter to participate virtually from home. “We’re really excited to be able to live stream and watch the march together," she said.

Watching and reflecting on the demands for police reform and racial equality, from one coast to another.

Cartoon Network’s Rob Scorcher Segues To Production Deal, Sam Register Adds Cartoon Network Studios Oversight, Amy Friedman Joins Net As Senior Advisor - Deadline

Tom Ascheim, President of Warner Bros’ recently formed Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics division, is realigning its executive ranks at Warner Bros Animation and Cartoon Network Studios.

Warner Bros Animation President Sam Register is expanding his responsibilities, adding oversight of Cartoon Network Studios to his purview, reporting to Ascheim. With Register’s promotion, Cartoon Network’s chief content officer Rob Sorcher, who served as head of Cartoon Network Studios, will segue into an overall production deal with Warner Bros Television Group, where he’ll create both animated and live-action properties.

Taking over Sorcher’s Cartoon Network programming oversight responsibilities on an interim basis is former Nickelodeon and Universal Kids executive Amy Friedman, who has been brought in as a senior advisor. Reporting to Ascheim, Friedman will provide creative, strategic and inclusive programming guidance for the Cartoon Network brand.

Ed Adams, EVP and General Manager of Warner Bros Animation, will now have an expanded role to serve both studios alongside Register, to whom he will continue to report.

In his new role, Register will lead both animation studios as separate entities. Between the two studios, the GKYAC animation operation currently produces more than 30 series including such hits as Teen Titans Go! and Looney Tunes Cartoons at WBA, and Craig of the Creek and We Bare Bears at CNS.

“The legacy of each of these great studios is long, with remarkable contributions to culture and the world of animation. There is no one better to usher in this exciting new period in these studios’ history than Sam,” said Ascheim. “We owe Rob a huge debt of gratitude for building the Cartoon Network brand to what it is today, creating a long list of imagination-capturing hit shows. He’s one of the most talented executives in our industry, someone who has changed the content game many times over, and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next for us.”

Said Sorcher, “I am honored to have played my part in producing the artistry, innovation and heart of Cartoon Network Studios, bringing joy to generations of young people around this world. I would like to thank Warner Bros Television Group for embracing my wide-ranging interests, and I’m energized by the potential of this next chapter.”

Register has served as president of Warner Bros Animation since April 2014, supervising the studio’s television animation unit and overseeing creative efforts related to the development and creation of new programming, including traditional animated series, original shorts, and original movies. He also runs the Warner Bros Television Group’s digital studio, Blue Ribbon Content, which was formed in 2014 and produces original series and content for digital platforms.

Prior to his role at Warner Bros Animation, Register developed and produced animated series for both Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros Animation. He began his animation career with Cartoon Network in 1994 and went on to run Cartoon Network Online, creating the company’s first website CartoonNetwork.com in 1998.

Friedman has previously held senior creative management positions at Nickelodeon, Noggin, TeenNick, Scratch (Viacom’s in-house Millennial innovation lab), Sprout and Universal Kids, and is the founder and president of Redhead Consulting, a brand creation and content development company focused on kids, teens and families. Her work in branding, inclusive storytelling and pro-social content has earned multiple Peabody, Beacon, Cable Ace and Creativity Awards.

Adams joined Warner Bros Animation in 2009. He was promoted to General Manager in 2015, and again to EVP & General Manager in 2018 with oversight of all of the division’s non-production activities. He came to WBA after more than a decade of business affairs, legal and operations experience at leading companies in the animation industry including DreamWorks Animation and Cookie Jar Entertainment.

IDEA charter school network facing added state scrutiny over request to expand - Houston Chronicle

A request by IDEA Public Schools to significantly expand its Texas footprint is facing heightened scrutiny from state education officials, who are seeking more information on the network's administrative, governance and financial practices following a spate of negative headlines tied to its spending.

In a letter sent two weeks ago to leaders of the state’s largest charter school operator, Texas Education Agency officials requested responses to about 15 questions that stem from criticism leveled against the organization in the past few years. The letter notes that IDEA engaged in spending “that some might consider questionable,” including the use of a private jet for executive travel, and had administrative missteps “that may be indicative of inadequate institutional and financial oversight.”

The state scrutiny comes in response to IDEA’s request to boost its enrollment cap from 63,200 students to 97,985, which would be the largest increase in Texas history, and add 27 campuses throughout the state. IDEA served about 49,500 students at 92 campuses last school year. The network opened its first four campuses in Greater Houston this month.

State educational officials have aided IDEA’s rapid expansion over the past decade, approving seven enrollment cap increases sought by the charter network. The approvals typically came through in April or May.

This year, however, IDEA’s enrollment cap request remains in limbo. Thirteen charter operators that sought cap increases this year received verdicts from the state as of mid-August, while IDEA and one other network still await responses.

“With a proposed expansion of this scale, the agency will require the charter holder to demonstrate that a comprehensive portfolio of institutional and financial controls, policies, practices and procedures are in place” to ensure funds are appropriately spent, TEA officials wrote in their five-page letter to IDEA leaders.

TEA officials have not said when they will issue a decision on IDEA’s request.

IDEA CEO and Superintendent JoAnn Gama on Friday said the organization found the state’s questions “fair and understandable.” IDEA responded to TEA officials Monday with a 13-page letter, outlining dozens of changes made in recent months.

“Whether we’re asking for 35 or 35,000 (new students), I think IDEA’s academic results and the work of our teachers and students we serve really supports our request to open more schools,” Gama said.

On HoustonChronicle.com: Following backlash, IDEA charter schools promises reform

Gama and former CEO Tom Torkelson founded IDEA about 20 years ago in the Rio Grande Valley, implementing a highly structured, results-focused system aimed at getting students from lower-income families into and through college.

The network has produced remarkable academic results, with 99 percent of students graduating from high school and more than 90 percent enrolling in college, both first in the state among large districts with similar demographics. Students in lower grades also outperform their peers on state standardized tests.

While the most ardent charter school opponents long have criticized IDEA’s approach — arguing, in part, that its rigorous academic standards screen out students with greater academic and behavioral needs — the network largely avoided widespread backlash amid its rapid growth.

Then, in December 2019, the Houston Chronicle reported on IDEA’s plans to sign an 8-year lease for a private jet, at a cost of nearly $15 million.

The spotlight triggered scrutiny of the organization and several more reports on IDEA’s spending practices, including its use of luxury boxes at San Antonio’s AT&T Center. Torkelson, a pillar of the state and national charter school movement, resigned in May and received a $900,000 payout as part of a separation agreement.

TEA officials noted these expenditures in its letter to IDEA this month. The agency also highlighted a 2019 federal report that criticized IDEA’s use of a fraction of its grant funds, the organization’s failure on several occasions to meet reporting deadlines for grant money and its debt of about $130,000 to the state retirement system due to a technical error.

On HoustonChronicle.com: IDEA arrived in Houston with high acceptance rates and plenty of skeptics

In response, IDEA officials said the organization has brought on management and governance consultants, instituted about 30 policy changes and added more board oversight to spending decisions, among other improvements.

Gama, who took over as CEO following Torkelson’s resignation, said IDEA’s culture has shifted in recent months to place more emphasis on public accountability. Unlike traditional public schools, IDEA’s governing board is unelected.

“I’ve made it really clear to my team going forward that every expenditure we make has to relate to student success and stand up to public scrutiny,” Gama said.

A denial of IDEA’s expansion request could have a dramatic impact on Texas families, public school districts and the charter network.

IDEA reported a waitlist of nearly 40,000 students in 2019-2020, illustrating the demand for its services. If those families remain in traditional public schools, districts such as Houston ISD would keep more funding tied to student enrollment.

A delay in expansion also would hurt IDEA’s bottom line. In anticipation of a smooth enrollment cap approval process, the network bought properties and started construction on campuses that were expected to open in August 2021.

“We have paused half of those projects, just in case all or none of these expansion amendment requests are approved, and the other half we’re moving really slowly on,” Gama said.

IDEA can afford a one-year delay on those properties, but “it’ll make things really tight,” Gama said. A delay also would require reworking parts of IDEA’s federal expansion grants, which have totaled $267 million over the past five years.

Convert SC Flex to Equip the Smart Grid Project of the Sport Center of Békéscsaba in Hungary - Arabian Industry

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

AEG Power Solutions, a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for industrial, critical infrastructure environments and innovative power electronic applications, today announced that Convert SC Flex storage converters were chosen by INFOWARE Zrt. as a core component of the micro-grid system that the company will implement in Békéscsaba, Hungary. The systems were sold through EXTOR, AEG Power Solutions long-time partner in the country.

The smart-grid project of Békéscsaba is part of the “Modern Cities” program of Hungary. The objective is to supply all energy needs of the urban sport center area, which includes today a general-purpose sports hall, a fencing sports hall and parking lots and will be extended further with a second multifunctional sports hall and a competition swimming pool. Geothermal power plants are also part of the project. The sports facilities of the city will then be powered by green energy sources.

INFOWARE will implement the full microgrid. The power will be provided by a 1.3 MWp photovoltaic power plant. The DC voltage produced by the solar cells is connected to the grid via 2 AEG Protect PV 880 inverters at a rated power of 650 kVA each.

The time and quantity differences between the weather-dependent production and the consumption of sports facilities are compensated by a lithium-ion battery energy storage system rated at 1.2 MW power and a capacity of 2.4 MWh. The energy storage system is based on lithium-ion battery modules of 7.61 kWh each, installed in a fire protection rack system.

The batteries are connected to the grid through two Convert SC Flex converters with a power rating of 600 kVA each. AEG PS Convert SC Flex features include grid fault detection and islanding as well as resynchronization once the supply is provided by the public grid again.

In the event of any grid failure, the systems switch seamlessly to off-grid operation and supply electricity directly from the solar power plant and energy storage to the sports facilities. Convert SC flex systems make this possible by performing the necessary local network stability tasks.

The facilities can continue to operate even in the event of a grid power outage, preventing potential emergency problems. When grid supply is available again, the microgrid is automatically reconnected thanks to the resynchronization process.

INFOWARE is also providing real-time energy management (EMS) and control system which performs local and remote-control tasks as well as

the local smart grid center which collects data further used by the “brain” of the microgrid system allowing to minimize the cost of energy used and optimize the whole installation.

The Békéscsaba SG1 smart grid project will be implemented by the end of 2020.

“We could be part of this project thanks to our partner in Hungary, EXTOR. It is a great opportunity to further prove on the field Convert SC Flex unique off-grid features, explains Andreas Becker, Head of Grid & Storage inside AEG Power Solutions.”

Indian River County Hospital District spends over $350,000 during pandemic to equip local groups with PPE - TCPalm

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

VERO BEACH — The Indian River County Hospital District has spent more than $356,000 so far during the pandemic to equip local health and educational organizations with necessary personal protective equipment and supplies.

Executive Director Ann Marie Suriano said the Hospital District, which is funded by taxpayers, has approved special funding requests from several organizations in need of medical and preventative equipment during the COVID-19 crisis.

The funding is above the usual allocations some of the organizations receive from the district to provide on-going health care services.

The Visiting Nurse Association of the Treasure Coast received $35,536.75 in May to cover the costs of surgical masks, and an additional $92,402.90 in August to cover personal protective equipment and supplies.

The VNA’s Mobile Health Unit, which is funded through the Hospital District, received $2,089.87 in June for signs and caution tape and an additional $4,524.90 for other supplies and personal protective equipment.

Whole Family Health Center in Vero Beach received $216,212.61 in August for personal protective equipment and other medical supplies. Costs to set-up a Telemed program for virtual visits between patients and physicians were also covered by the Hospital District.

Subscriber Only: COVID-19 nursing home deaths doubled in last month

Most recently, the Gifford Youth Achievement Center asked the district to fund $5,699 for acrylic sneeze guards for the desks where children work during the center’s after-school program. The sneeze guards will help slow the spread of germs between children and staff during tutoring sessions.

Suriano said all of the special personal protective equipment requests will be paid for through the Hospital District’s reserves.

“Every year, we budget some money for reserves and we are covering these special requests as indigent care contingency items,” said Suriano.

After it became apparent in early spring that there would be a need for more personal protective equipment in the community, the Hospital District offered to cover some of the costs as a funder of last resort.

More: Aug. 28 COVID-19 on the Treasure Coast

They encouraged organizations to find other sources such as government grants or through the United Way, but offered to assist those organizations unable to secure the personal protective equipment funding through those sources.

The district will consider two more special requests when it meets again in September.

COVID-19 patients

  • Hospital District Board Chairman Marybeth Cunningham said that as of Aug. 28, there were eight patients in-house at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, none in Intensive Care.
  • That number is down from Aug. 19, when she reported there were 13 in-house patients, four of which were in Intensive Care.

Philippine Network That Clashed With Duterte Ends Local Coverage - The New York Times

MANILA — A major Philippine news network that recently lost its broadcast license planned to close a dozen regional news operations on Friday, in what advocates called the latest blow to the country’s independent press.

The network, ABS-CBN, which President Rodrigo Duterte has frequently accused of bias, said it could not afford to keep the local newsrooms going. Lawmakers in the House of Representatives, which is largely controlled by allies of Mr. Duterte, voted in July not to renew the network’s broadcast franchise; its main channels had already been pulled off the air in May, when its license expired.

But the network’s cable operation remained intact, because it is run by a different unit within ABS-CBN. And its regional news teams kept providing coverage for local and national audiences, which viewers could still watch on cable and the internet.

For many of those viewers, the greatest loss will be “TV Patrol,” a popular nightly newscast that has been produced for three decades. Local versions of the program combined national news with regional coverage, delivered in regional dialects. Friday’s “TV Patrol” will be the last in that format, though a more limited version will still be produced in Manila, the capital.

“My heart breaks for our colleagues in the regions, who tried to serve their public despite severe limitations,” said Maria Regina Reyes, the Manila-based head of news at ABS-CBN. “It’s tragic that local audiences will lose a familiar and crucial source of information, especially at this time.”

Many had seen ABS-CBN’s coverage as a lifeline for Filipinos in remote provinces as they struggle to cope with the coronavirus pandemic. Its regional news operations had their own broadcast channels before the network lost its license; since then, they have continued to produce “TV Patrol” and other programming, which they sent to Manila to be shown online and through cable.

Credit...Ezra Acayan/Getty Images

Regional employees also “did their best to continue producing and streaming our local ‘TV Patrol’ on the regional Facebook pages and YouTube channels,” Ms. Reyes said.

Mr. Duterte has denied that he had anything to do with Congress’s decision not to renew the network’s franchise. But he often accused ABS-CBN, the country’s largest broadcaster, of biased coverage of his antidrug war, which has left thousands dead since he became president in 2016. He has called himself a “casualty” of the network, which is owned by the Lopez family.

The family’s now-deceased patriarch, Eugenio Lopez, escaped from jail and fled to the United States in the 1970s, during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. He returned after Mr. Marcos’s downfall in 1986 and re-established the network. Mr. Duterte, another strongman leader, is an admirer of the late Mr. Marcos.

ABS-CBN said it was no longer profitable to keep operating its regional newsrooms because it had lost so much advertising revenue since being taken off the air. It said thousands of staff members would lose their jobs. ABS-CBN Regional, the arm of the company that oversees the local operations, will also stop producing its nine morning shows, which combined news and entertainment coverage.

The Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines called the developments “an avoidable national tragedy.”

Credit...Jes Aznar for The New York Times

“Millions of Filipinos outside Metro Manila will lose a fast and credible source of news today as they struggle through a life-threatening crisis,” the association said in a statement. “Many isolated and disaster-prone villages unreached by other networks can dangerously lose their access to national news, including government pronouncements.”

Mr. Duterte’s critics say he has gone after media outlets that closely documented his war on drugs, including ABS-CBN and Rappler, an online publication whose chief executive was convicted of cyber libel in June.

Some ABS-CBN staff members were working through grief on their last day. “I am still working and looking for updates for my final report later,” Queenie Casimiro, ABS-CBN’s news chief in the southern city of Zamboanga, said on Friday, tears welling up.

Ms. Casimiro led ABS-CBN’s coverage this week of two suicide bombings on the southern island of Jolo, across the strait from Zamboanga, which killed 15 people.

An ABS-CBN journalist in the eastern region of Bicol, Mylce Mella, said that she and some colleagues might set up a news media cooperative. “We are just trying to fill the void of losing ABS-CBN Bicol,” she said. “I am writing my remaining stories now.”

Ms. Casimiro had packed her things from the office, including old VHS tapes of her coverage of past terror attacks. For her last week, she had essentially been on her own, reporting and operating a camera, because the regular staff had already been let go.

“I am trying to come up later with a follow-up report, but I can’t stop crying,” she said. “If only I could sell my tears.”
