COVID-19 Prevention Network seeking volunteers for vaccine clinical trial - KABC-TV

As medical professionals continue to work on a COVID-19 vaccine, one group is looking for adults of all races, ethnic groups, sexes and genders to volunteer for a clinical trial.

It does not matter if you're not in perfect health because researchers with the COVID-19 Prevention Network want to see how the vaccine affects people with underlying health conditions.

It's important to note that the vaccine trial will require a significant time commitment.

Participants will have to visit a research site up to a dozen times and keep track of how they feel after receiving a shot.

Those over the age of 18 interested in volunteering can visit the COVID-19 Prevention Network website to fill out a survey and see if they qualify for the trial.

GM will help EVgo triple its fast charger network in the US - The Verge

General Motors is working with electric vehicle charging network EVgo to build more than 2,700 new fast chargers in cities and suburbs across the US over the next five years. That is more than triple the 800 fast chargers that EVgo currently has on its network, which is in 34 states and serves “more than 200,000 customers.”

The buildout will help EVgo keep pace with other growing fast-charging networks. Tesla boasts 2,000 Supercharger stations (and 18,000 stalls) worldwide, and Volkswagen’s new Electrify America network is already up to 452 stations in the US.

The new stations will be “located in highly visible areas and most will be able to charge at least four vehicles simultaneously,” according to a press release, and will be able to charge at rates between 100kW to 350kW. They won’t be exclusive to GM vehicles, and the first chargers that are part of this new buildout will be available in early 2021. The two companies are targeting around 40 different metropolitan markets.

GM CEO Mary Barra said that both GM and EVgo will invest in the new buildout, but she would not specify the size of those investments. Barra also said GM will help EVgo “work with grant and utility programs” and “sign the charters in areas where they will do the most to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.”

GM’s investment in the buildout represents a big turnaround for the company, which once said it wouldn’t invest in infrastructure for EVs. Asked about this on a press call on Friday, Barra said GM has done “extensive” customer research over the last few years and that it ultimately decided investing in a large network of fast chargers was the “next logical step.”

“Clearly, having a robust charging infrastructure is something our customers told us was important,” she said.

Koch network restarts door-to-door canvasing for GOP candidates despite coronavirus pandemic - CNBC

Charles Koch

The activist organization backed by libertarian billionaire Charles Koch is getting back to its ground game for its preferred candidates, while the coronavirus pandemic continues to sweep across parts of the country.

Americans for Prosperity Action, a super PAC tied to the larger Koch network, is reactivating its in-person door knocking with just under 100 days until the general election after shifting to a virtual campaign earlier in the year.

AFP Action is backing a wide array of contenders, including five Republican Sens. David Perdue, R-Ga., Steve Daines, R-Mont., Cory Gardner, R-Colo, Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and John Cornyn, R-Texas.

Four of the five Senate races have been deemed toss-ups by the Cook Political Report, and in some cases, these Republicans incumbents are down in the polls. Their five states combined have had more than 768,000 reported cases of Covid-19, with most coming from the state of Texas. There are more than 4 million confirmed cases nationwide and at least 152,000 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

AFP Action plans to unleash a seven-figure digital ad buy in August that will include supportive spots for all five Senate candidates, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. Another Koch-linked outside group, Concerned Veterans for America Action, will launch separate digital ads next week backing Daines and Tillis. The overall buy will be spread across various social media platforms, connected TV and streaming services, these people added. They declined to be named as the decisions have yet to be made public.

So far in the 2020 election cycle, AFP Action has spent nearly $4 million backing the five GOP lawmakers, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity, told CNBC in an interview that starting in late May he traveled to some of these states to see if the team could return to conducting in-person engagement with voters. Since then, he said, they've been "doubling down our on the ground effort" with a focus on swing state voters.

Phillips said his teams have been following all of the state guidelines. When they go knock on doors, the volunteers practice social distancing, he said. In some states, though highly encouraged, people are not required by the state to wear a mask while walking outside and, Phillips noted, they do not always wear masks when they are speaking with voters outside their homes. They do encourage volunteers to wear masks while they are traveling together in a car.

When they are in their offices, the activists follow the strict state guidelines for the number of people allowed simultaneously in a workspace and urge their representatives to wear masks while confined to that area. Phillips pointed to field offices in North Carolina as an example, where they are only allowing 10 people indoors at a time. They often shift groups of 10 people through each office at different times in order to follow state rules.

Once they determined voters were willing to engage with them again, AFP went back to work in late June and has since started framing the election on who is best to help bring back a sense of normalcy in the wake of the pandemic.

"More than any single issue, these swing voters are raising one question. And that question is: 'how do I get back to my normal life for me and the people I love?'" Phillips said. Their job, he said, is to explain how their Senate candidates could help them get back to what they once had.

The renewed efforts have led to AFP Action connect to nearly 6 million registered voters in targeted races across the country. It's knocked on at least 100,000 doors in those races.

Through his own recent door-knocking experience, Phillips says swing state voters don't appear to be settled on one candidate over the other and he defined the races as "fluid," particularly as people struggle to overcome health and financial hurdles due to Covid-19. He also senses that more people are paying attention to politics than he's ever seen in his over three decades of experience, which could lead to a record turnout.

"They are profoundly impacted and so they're paying more attention to the news and to politics than they normally do by a wide margin," he said.

"I do believe that the swing voters are fluid where they are headed and I do think they are withholding judgment right now," he added.

That does not mean voters should expect AFP Action spots on broadcast television over the next few months. Phillips told CNBC that it has no plans to air TV ads this cycle and are instead solely going to be airing digital spots.

That too is a change as the group spent just over $2 million during the 2018 congressional midterm election on TV ads.

GM is tripling the size of its EV fast charging network - CNN

The automaker is adding more than 2,700 fast chargers over the next five years in conjunction with its EVgo partnership. Chargers will be installed in a variety of areas across cities and suburbs, including grocery stores, retailers and other "high-traffic" locations, with the aim of letting people charge their cars while running errands, the company said in a press release. It takes under a half hour for a car to fully charge.
The strategy stands in contrast to Tesla's own fast charging network, known as Supercharger, that originally focused on providing quick-charge capability along Interstate routes to facilitate long-distance drives. GM CEO Mary Barra said on a call with reporters that the focus on metropolitan areas was a result of customer feedback, and a desire to tap into an underserved potential customer base who live in apartments without access to personal garage charging systems.
But Tesla's network only charges its own vehicles, while EVgo's pumps can charge a variety of vehicles (including Tesla (TSLA) models).
EVgo already has more than 800 charging locations, with some of the new chargers launching by early 2021, the two companies announced Friday.
Barra said in a release the expansion would "bolster the public fast charging network available to EV customers ahead of increased market demand and reinforce our commitment to an all-electric, zero-emissions future."
GM and EVgo are building more than 2,700 fast chargers over the next five years.
GM has been expanding its fleet of electric vehicles on sale in recent years. A new version of the Bolt EV will be launched later this year, the company recently said, and the GMC Hummer electric truck will be released next year. A crossover SUV version, called the Bolt EUV, will debut in the summer of 2021.
GM announced in March it has created a new electric vehicle battery that offers up to 400 miles of range and will be cheaper to produce than today's batteries. That's slightly less driving range than any car Tesla offers. Tesla claims a range of 402 miles for the latest version of its Model S Long Range Plus sedan.
Electric cars don't need fast chargers all the time, of course. The vast majority of the time, electric cars are charged at home or at work, using chargers that can take six to eight hours. Fast chargers are different. They are designed to quickly fill a car's battery — not all the way, which would stress the battery, but usually up to about 80% — so people can get back on their way.
In addition to GM and Tesla, Volkswagen is working on a charging network in the US. It's being funded thanks to a settlement VW reached with US regulators over the automaker's diesel emissions scandal. Electrify America expects to have about 500 fast chargers in the US by the end of the year.
--CNN Business' Peter Valdes-Dapena contributed to this report.

Twitter says ‘phone spear phishing attack’ used to gain network access in crypto scam breach - TechCrunch

Twitter has revealed a little more detail about the security breach it suffered earlier this month when a number of high profile accounts were hacked to spread a cryptocurrency scam — writing in a blog post that a “phone spear phishing attack” was used to target a small number of its employees.

Once the attackers had successfully gained network credentials via this social engineering technique they were in a position to gather enough information about its internal systems and processes to target other employees who had access to account support tools which enabled them to take control of verified accounts, per Twitter’s update on the incident.

“A successful attack required the attackers to obtain access to both our internal network as well as specific employee credentials that granted them access to our internal support tools. Not all of the employees that were initially targeted had permissions to use account management tools, but the attackers used their credentials to access our internal systems and gain information about our processes. This knowledge then enabled them to target additional employees who did have access to our account support tools,” it writes.

“This attack relied on a significant and concerted attempt to mislead certain employees and exploit human vulnerabilities to gain access to our internal systems,” Twitter adds, dubbing the incident “a striking reminder of how important each person on our team is in protecting our service”.

It now says the attackers used the stolen credentials to target 130 Twitter accounts — going on to tweet from 45; access the DM inbox of 36; and download the Twitter data of 7 (previously it reported 8, so perhaps one attempted download did not complete). All affected account holders have been contacted directly by Twitter at this point, per its blog post.

Notably, the company has still not disclosed how many employees or contractors had access to its account support tools. The greater that number, the larger the attack vector which could be targeted by the hackers.

Last week Reuters reported that more than 1,000 people at Twitter had access, including a number of contractors. Two former Twitter employees told the news agency such a broad level of access made it difficult for the company to defend against this type of attack. Twitter declined to comment on the report.

Its update now acknowledges “concern” around levels of employee access to its tools but offers little  additional detail — saying only that it has teams “around the world” helping with account support.

It also claims access to account management tools is “strictly limited”, and “only granted for valid business reasons”. Yet later in the blog post Twitter notes it has “significantly” limited access to the tools since the attack, lending credence to the criticism that far too many people at Twitter were given access prior to the breach.

Twitter’s post also provides very limited detail about the specific technique the attackers used to successfully social engineer some of its workers and then be in a position to target an unknown number of other staff who had access to the key tools. Although it says the investigation into the attack is ongoing, which may be a factor in how much detail it feels able to share. (The blog notes it will continue to provide “updates” as the process continues.)

On the question of what is phone spear phishing in this specific case it’s not clear what particular technique was successfully able to penetrate Twitter’s defences. Spear phishing generally refers to an individually tailored social engineering attack, with the added component here of phones being involved in the targeting.

One security commentator we contacted suggested a number of possibilities.

“Twitter’s latest update on the incident remains frustratingly opaque on details,” said UK-based Graham Cluley. “‘Phone spear phishing’ could mean a variety of things. One possibility, for instance, is that targeted employees received a message on their phones which appeared to be from Twitter’s support team, and asked them to call a number. Calling the number might have taken them to a convincing (but fake) helpdesk operator who might be able to trick users out of credentials. The employee, thinking they’re speaking to a legitimate support person, might reveal much more on the phone than they would via email or a phishing website.”

“Without more detail from Twitter it’s hard to give definitive advice, but if something like that happened then telling workers the genuine support number to call if they ever need to — rather than relying on a message they receive on the phone — can reduce the likelihood of people being duped,” Cluley added.

“Equally the conversation could be initiated by a scammer calling the employee, perhaps using a VOIP phone service and using caller ID spoofing to pretend to be ringing from a legitimate number. Or maybe they broke into Twitter’s internal phone system and were able to make it look like an internal support call. We need more details!”

Air Force’s game-changing approach to cloud accreditation - Federal News Network

The Air Force’s Platform One software development effort isn’t just changing the way the service develops applications. It’s also transforming how airmen and civilians access those programs.

The unit simplified, without losing any security rigor, how applications connect to the cloud.

Nicolas Chaillan, the Air Force’s chief software officer, said the new approach is all about making it easier to access secure software in the cloud.

Nicolas Chaillan is the Air Force’s chief software officer. (Photo courtesy AFCEA)

“We created the first cloud native access point and got it accredited. By itself, it’s game changing because it enables the team to connect to the cloud directly without going through a cloud access point that is hosted on the Defense Department Information Network (DoDIN),” Chaillan said on Ask the CIO. “That enables the team, particularly outside of the DoDIN, like partners and vendors, to connect to the Platform One stack without having to go through the cloud access point on premise and have to virtual private network on NIPRNet to connect. Things like that are game changing for the department.”

Along with the Defense Department’s chief information officer’s office and the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Air Force created the cloud native access point as a pathfinder to prove this approach.

Chaillan said the Air Force deployed it in a way that it can scale across DoD and deploy it on any cloud.

The Air Force tested it with Platform One and the F-35 and Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) teams.

“I think that is demonstrating that the more we move to the cloud, the more we have to be on the cloud without having to bring anyone back to the DoDIN, even more so if they already are not on the DoDIN, which is actually reducing the attack surface and cyber risks,” he said. “It’s up and running now. We have dozens of options to allow teams to connect with a thick end point or zero client and a virtual desktop interface, and we have capability with the zero trust enforcement to enable teams to use both government furnished equipment but also bring your own device, mobile and desktop. We can assess the state of the device, who they are in the organization and white list access to what they should have access to.”

The native cloud access point also helps the Air Force move to a zero trust environment where the device and role of the user offer more security and flexibility than a traditional VPN.

“The goal is to scale and that will depend on the lessons learned. The prime concern of Cyber Command, NSA, DoD CIO and others is there are no cyber issues,” Chaillan said. “Once we demonstrate that the cyber posture can be improved, my hope is this becomes part of the accepted way to connect to the cloud and update the cloud security guide to reflect that as well.”

The cloud access point pathfinder also builds upon the Air Force’s Fast Track Authority to Operate (ATO) policy issued in 2019. The new process gives authorizing officials the discretion to make decisions based on several factors: the cybersecurity baseline, an assessment or penetration test and ensuring there is a continuous monitoring strategy for the system.

Anyone can be a software factory

Chaillan said the native cloud access point becomes more important as the Air Force and its partners develop more software-as-a-service.

The Air Force has more than 20 software factories in the United States, including well-known ones like Kessel Run in Boston, Mass., or Kobayashi Maru in Los Angeles, California. Through Platform One, program offices feel empowered to become a software factory by embracing the culture and tools.

“The key for us is to make sure each one understands their mission focus and they piggyback on the work by Platform One so they can simply focus on building mission software and not a custom dev/sec/ops platform pipeline,” he said.

The Defense Department CIO recently designated Platform One as an enterprise service for all of the military services and agencies to use.

Dana Deasy, the DoD CIO, said on Thursday, Platform One sets standards and removes some of the non-technical obstacles so services and agencies can digitally transform more quickly.

“People become fixated on the cloud aspect of this, but if you really dig under the covers of this, the Air Force truly has matured this vision that I’ve been an advocate for a long time around dev/sec/ops. They have a done a lot of work around the entire software development process and various tools and techniques that we are advocating as part of our agile workforce,” Deasy said. “When we announced [Platform] One, while people picked up on the word cloud, the big message there was we actually, for the first time, had designated a cloud across DoD that could be used for a common way of doing dev/sec/ops.”

Chaillan said the Air Force also is talking to civilian agencies, including the Veterans Affairs Department, the IRS, the Justice Department and many others. He said the other agencies can use the containers, code and contract vehicle, which includes 55 basic ordering agreements so users can acquire services, licenses and cloud services within 30 days.

In July, the Air Force opened up the basic ordering agreements by releasing a solicitation to bring in up to 25 more vendors to provide dev/sec/ops services. Bids are due Aug. 10.

Chaillan said more than 45 programs across all services and agencies are using Platform One tools and capabilities.

He said Platform One is a critical enabler to help the Air Force, and DoD more broadly, move from one big release to a smaller iterative process to release new capabilities.

“I think we bring more security, more real-time visibility instead of seeing an assessment every year or whenever, they are able to see continuously the cyber posture and reporting,” Chaillan said. “I think that transparency and access to the data has been critical to convince the cyber community and the rest of the DoD community to jump on this. I actually believe this is way more secure. Incremental change by definition is going to be smaller and less impactful and the ability to update fast, fail fast and learn fast is critical.”

Platform One has helped save DoD programs more than 100 years of development time in the first year of use.

“By moving these programs to dev/sec/ops, we see an 18-month savings over the five-year life of a program. It’s pretty amazing,” he said.

How to find and fix vulnerable default credentials on your network - TechRepublic

Network appliances and devices that still have their default credentials present a risk to your organization, says SecurityHQ.

credential-spill-edit.jpg

Image: iStockphoto/scyther5

Think of all the routers, switches, appliances, and other devices that may be available and accessible on your network. Then consider all the ones that require some type of account to authenticate and gain access. How many of them potentially still have their default credentials? Not sure? Therein lies the problem, according to a recent blog post from security service provider SecurityHQ.

SEE: Zero trust security: A cheat sheet (free PDF) (TechRepublic)

The problem with default credentials

More about cybersecurity

In its blog post entitled "Notes from the Field. Don't Default on Password Security," SecurityHQ described the trap of default credentials.

Many hardware devices and their associated applications come with a built-in username and password so that administrators can gain initial access to configure them.

After the device is set up, good security practices dictate that the administrator change the default credentials to ones that are more secure and complex. But sometimes those built-in credentials remain in place, either for convenience or because of forgetfulness.

Now imagine that your organization is breached by a cybercriminal. The attacker typically scans your network to look for vulnerable spots, notes SecurityHQ. Such a scan can reveal which ports are open and accessible as well as which applications and devices still have their default credentials.

A quick search on the internet will usually reveal the default credentials for a specific product. And those are all the hacker needs to take over that device. If the compromised device or application is connected to a server on your domain, the attacker can then use the access to hack into other accounts and servers.

How to scan for default credentials

The first task you should take is to scan your network for default credentials, advises SecurityHQ. For this, you'll want to tap into a vulnerability assessment tool. Such companies as Qualys, Nessus, and Rapid7 all provide tools that can look for applications and appliances that still have their default credentials. All three have free trials so you can test each one.

default-passwords-securityhq.png

Applications and public facing appliances with default credentials enabled.

Image: SecurityHQ

Resolve the problem

If you find any devices with their default credentials, SecurityHQ offers the following four recommendations:

  1. Once default credentials are highlighted, change or disable them immediately if they are not required.
  2. Ensure that new passwords are used and that these passwords are unique, long, and include a combination of different numbers, letters, and symbols. Do not use old passwords.
  3. Store the new unique passwords safely in a password manager or enterprise Privileged Access Management tool (PAM).
  4. Take this opportunity to evaluate if a public facing application or appliance is really meant to have such exposure. By limiting the exposure, you will help to reduce the attack vectors.

Buffalo Bills send rookies home to conduct virtual meetings - NFL.com

The COVID-19-altered offseason has already thrown teams a few curveballs. There will be more throughout the 2020 campaign.

Expect teams to be uber-cautious with their players, especially in the early portions of the ramp-up period of training camp.

Case-in-point: The Buffalo Bills called an audible Thursday.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on Inside Training Camp Live that the Bills sent all of their rookies home for virtual meetings instead of holding in-person meetings as scheduled. Buffalo later announced that two players -- Dane Jackson and Siran Neal -- has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The Bills have had five positive tests since testing began last Tuesday.

"The Buffalo Bills today I'm told sent home all of the rookies they had inside the building that were going to be a part of meetings there," Garafolo said on NFL Network. "The Bills have had some positive COVID tests that they have reported. They've got guys on the reserve/COVID list. So what they're trying to do is they're trying to stay ahead of it. They said we were going to have these meetings here today. Why don't we just go and do it virtually? So they sent all those guys home and they're having their meetings virtually. Then they'll regather again at some point maybe as early as tomorrow and go forward. The Bills just trying to stay ahead of it as they possibly can. And all these teams learning that it's going to be a mix of virtual and in-person anyway. There might be some days where we have a plan to do things in person and, you know what, we're going to do it virtually today. That was the Bills today. It might be your team tomorrow."

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport obtained the following statement from the Bills on Thursday afternoon:

"As we were informed by medical experts as training camp opened, we expected to have positive tests for COVID. With 5 since the beginning of the testing period last Tuesday, we decided to take a disciplined, proactive and preventative approach to hopefully eliminate additional cases within our team."

The Federal Communications Commission declared on Thursday that Amazon may build its ambitious satellite internet system, which would compete with SpaceX's Starlink network.

Amazon's project, known as Kuiper, would see the company launch 3,236 satellites into low Earth orbit. Amazon says it will deploy the satellites in five phases, with broadband service beginning once it has 578 satellites in orbit.

"We conclude that grant of Kuiper's application would advance the public interest by authorizing a system designed to increase the availability of high-speed broadband service to consumers, government, and businesses," the FCC secretary Marlene Dortch said in its authorization order.

The company has not outlined a timeline or cost for Kuiper and the FCC said the company has not finished the satellites' design. But Morgan Stanley has declared the high-speed internet network has the potential to be a "$100 billion opportunity" for Jeff Bezos' company.

Kuiper is poised to go toe-to-toe with SpaceX's Starlink network of high-speed internet satellites, which Elon Musk's company has been steadily launching for the past year. SpaceX has launched more than 500 Starlink satellites and aims to begin offering direct-to-consumer broadband service later this year.

One issue that SpaceX pushed back on during was Kuiper's approach to orbital debris. While Amazon emphasized that it would remove its satellites from orbit within 355 days of them completing their missions, SpaceX pointed out that Kuiper "failed to submit a casualty risk analysis" of whether Amazon's satellite debris might survive reentry. Part of that analysis would be an estimate calculating "the probability of human casualty," which the FCC said Amazon will have to latter present as a part of a final debris mitigation plan.

Notably, SpaceX wasn't the only one to push back during the FCC's consideration of Amazon's application. Iridium Communications, Hughes Network Systems, Intelsat, Inmarsat, SES, WorldVu, Telesat and Theia also filed comments about or petitions against Kuiper's application.

While wholly separate from Amazon, Bezos also runs another space venture called Blue Origin that is developing next-generation rockets and spacecraft such as a lunar lander for returning humans to the moon. A team led by Blue Origin recently won a NASA contract worth $579 million as it competes with Elon Musk's SpaceX and aerospace contractor Dynetics to build spacecraft that help the agency achieve its goal of landing astronauts on the moon by 2024.

Kuiper is the name of a belt of objects that include asteroids and dwarf planets. It was named for the late Dutch American astronomer Gerard Kuiper.

Play Roanoke working to equip all playgrounds with sanitizing stations - WSLS 10

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

ROANOKE, Va. – A new project is giving families the option to play outside and stay safe at the same time.

Roanoke Parks and Recreation, also known as Play Roanoke, is working to equip all city playgrounds with hand sanitizing stations.

As 10 has reported, the city kept all of its playgrounds open during the pandemic.

Right now, 12 of the city's 35 playgrounds have hand sanitizing stations.

While Play Roanoke doesn't have research showing how often children are getting outside, they do know parents certainly are.

“Adults are flocking to the outdoors in numbers we’ve never seen before,” said Stephanie Long, marketing coordinator for Play Roanoke.

There’s no word yet on when each playground will be outfitted with a station.

Long said they are looking for ways to pay for the setup.

While it seems just about everything is going virtual these days, the outdoor agency is adjusting to meet people online.

Play Roanoke’s goal is to get people outdoors, but they’re putting together virtual courses to do that.

One of those includes the junior ranger program. It’s free for all kids wanting to participate.

The idea is to entertain and teach children while also sparking a love for the outdoors.

“Hopefully if we get kids outdoors really early and show them how to enjoy them responsibly and show them the benefits of having these outdoors public spaces, then they will protect them when they get older,” Long said.

Long said they’ve even started putting together online programming for adults, like a virtual pub quiz.

Independent Distributor Network Poised to Offer Wine & Spirits Producers a Distribution Alternative - Brewbound.com

ATLANTA – The wine and spirits business continues to evolve, with producers and buyers alike looking for more service, more flexibility, and more choice. Independent Distributor Network (IDN) is a unique model, whose members are local, family-owned distributors working together to offer wine and spirits producers an alternative solution to establish a national footprint, and buyers with a greater choice in selection.

“The top 10 wine and spirits distributors account for roughly 75% of the national market,” says David Stubblefield, President of the IDN Board or Directors. “Distributor consolidation has been a trend for the past 20 years. It has led to more efficiency and economies of scale for those companies, but has also left more niche or craft wine and spirits brands with fewer options for 3-tier sales.”

According to Wines Vines Analytics, there were approximately 3,000 distributors in 1995, but only 1,200 of those remained by 2017. The top two distributors now account for $27 billion in wine sales or more than half of the nearly $50 billion U.S. consumers spend on domestic wines per year. At the same time, the number of domestic wineries has grown three-fold and imports are at more than 475 Million gallons annually (IndexBox estimates).

“Today, U.S. consumers have access to more selection than ever, but many producers find themselves without options for national distribution,” said Joe Cekola, Vice President of the IDN Board or Directors. “They are big enough to need it, but small enough not to have the same advantages as the biggest producers. Therefore, we started IDN as an alternative solution by offering the potential for national coverage, with the high level of service and attention provided by our members.”

There are currently 19 members of the IDN family of distributors, covering 18 states. The company plans to expand to another 10-15 states over the next two years. Each member company is family-owned, often multi-generational, and brings expertise in their local market.

As a network, IDN provides a sales, marketing, and distribution solution for mid-to-large scale wineries and distilleries seeking fair and equitable opportunities to cultivate their businesses, through a combination of brand building, local market expertise, and proven growth strategies.

“For our members, the multi-state alliance creates a viable opportunity to attract existing brands and also to build new brands,” concludes David Browne, Director of The Domestic Wine Portfolio for the IDN. “IDN combines buying power with partner suppliers to create cost savings and increased margin, with the possibility of shared purchasing and logistics. For the restaurant or retail buyer, IDN gives them additional choice in products, working with people they trust who provide unrivaled service, sales, and marketing.”

The Independent Distributor Network is poised to revolutionize alcoholic beverage distribution in the United States by providing more choice for the consumer, better options for the buyer, and industry leading execution for the supplier through leadership with decades of industry experience. Those looking to become members of the Independent Distributor Network can do so by contacting the network via their website.

About Independent Distributor Network

Independent Distributor Network was established in late 2019 with the goal of overcoming industry consolidation by offering a new model for wine and spirits distribution. The alliance of members consists of 19 local distributors in Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin. IDN provides a sales, marketing, and distribution solution for mid-to-large scale wineries and distilleries seeking a fair and equitable opportunity for national sales and distribution services, through a combination of brand building, local market expertise, and proven growth strategies.

Students Need School Supplies At Home, Too. Local Foundation Raises Money To Equip Kids For Virtual Learning

Updated Thursday at 2:25 p.m.

The Broward Education Foundation usually collects donations of school supplies and delivers them right to campuses. This year, the nonprofit is asking for monetary contributions to purchase supplies for individual children.

“We'll be providing all the different school supplies that they'll need: markers, pens, notepads, papers, pencils — things that they'll still need to complete their work, even though they're working virtually,” said Dustin Jacobs, a foundation board member who is also vice president of marketing for BrightStart Credit Union, the fundraiser’s main sponsor.

“Typically the teachers or the schools would come and pick out the supplies. This year, we're providing packages,” Jacobs said.

The foundation’s hope is to provide a basic 18-piece supply kit to every student in the county’s 112 Title I schools. A donation of $10 equips one student, and $250 buys supplies for a full class.

The virtual back-to-school drive will help meet the growing needs of families impacted financially by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reached new heights in South Florida as a new school year is set to begin. Broward County Public Schools, along with the region’s other districts, plan to begin fully online in order to prevent further spread of the virus.

The fundraiser continues through Aug. 21. Donate here.

Gov. DeSantis Extends Ban On Evictions, Foreclosures Until September 1

Updated on Thursday at 6:15 a.m.

Foreclosure and eviction deadlines have again been pushed back, giving Floridians who have been impacted by the novel coronavirus pandemic a little time to pay their housing bills.

For the fourth time since the ban was first signed in April, Gov. Ron DeSantis has extended an executive order that prevents foreclosures and evictions. The deadline has been delayed to 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 1, the order said.

DeSantis had until July 31 to make a decision on whether to change the foreclosure and eviction deadline; that was when the third extension, implemented on June 30, was supposed to end.

Palm Beach County Raises Fines For COVID-19 Violators

Updated on Thursday at 6:15 a.m.

Targeting the businesses that flout Palm Beach County’s pandemic rules, violators may face harsher fines or even jail time.

County commissioners updated the county’s emergency management code to make violating such a rule a second-degree misdemeanor. Civil citations can now be issued up to $250 for the first offense and $500 for each subsequent violation, but those fines are halved if the business accepts the citation without challenge.

If a special magistrate gets involved, fines can be issued for up to $1,000 per day for the first violation, up to $5,000 per day for each subsequent violation and up to $15,000 if the violation is deemed “irreparable or irreversible in nature,” meaning it “imperials or threatens to imperil the life, safety or welfare of another.”

Samsung Expands Commercial Availability of CBRS Network Solutions to Deliver Internet Service to Underserved Markets - Samsung US Newsroom - Samsung Newsroom US

Samsung’s CBRS Massive MIMO solution enables operators to offer cost-effective broadband services to more people

By Sanjay Kodali, Head of Customer Technology Solutions, Networks Division, Samsung Electronics America

With wireless internet access playing a crucial role in maintaining productivity, interactions and economic activity, it is critical to ensure high-quality, reliable connectivity in under-served and rural communities. While certain towns may be harder to reach – due to topography, geography or access challenges – the need to access faster download speeds and greater capacity in these rural areas remains high. This is especially important today, as working- and educating-from-home has become the norm, and internet voice and video demands rise.

Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) offers a solution for these communities. After launching late last year, with Samsung CBRS solutions in use across multiple rural U.S. markets, the company has expanded the commercial availability of its CBRS solutions to all mobile operators.

“Samsung’s CBRS solutions in the mid-band 3.5GHz spectrum are now providing operators with a fixed wireless access approach for rural areas to deliver service from a cell site to otherwise hard-to-reach homes and businesses. “

CBRS offers an efficient way to deploy high-quality wireless access. Operators found that by leveraging their existing cellular sites, new radios can be added to deliver wireless internet services, offering a more cost-effective approach than cable or fiber-based solutions, which can be more time-consuming and costly (due to factors such as right-of-way access and trenching requirements).  With Samsung’s CBRS massive MIMO radio, operators now have a more efficient way to deliver fixed wireless access to underserved communities. AT&T was the first mobile operator to announce it would expand access to broadband connectivity in rural markets using Samsung’s CBRS solution.

In July of 2019, Samsung delivered its first Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-certified 5G-ready CBRS massive MIMO solution, capable of delivering fixed wireless access internet service to rural and suburban areas. Based on the 3GPP Release 15 standard, the solution will initially deliver multi-carrier LTE, with a software upgrade path to 5G New Radio (NR). Using Samsung’s beamforming massive MIMO antenna technology, the CBRS solution can deliver broadband service to many households and businesses using a single radio.

Greater Flexibility, Cost-Efficiency

Samsung’s CBRS solution helps improve flexibility and reduce hardware investments for operators deploying CBRS networks by leveraging the maximum Instantaneous Bandwidth (IBW) and Occupied Bandwidth (OBW) specifications.

Specifically, Samsung’s 64T64R CBRS Massive MIMO radio, now commercially available, can operate over the entire CBRS spectrum with an IBW of 150MHz. The massive MIMO unit can simultaneously transmit up to 100MHz of OBW, with a combination of 10 and 20MHz carriers (or spectrum bandwidth) across the entire CBRS Band.

Samsung's CBRS network solutions bring broadband service and enhanced coverage to underserved rural areas. Solution featured (in photo): Samsung's 5G-ready CBRS massive MIMO radio
Samsung’s CBRS network solutions bring broadband service and enhanced coverage to underserved rural areas. The solution featured (in photo): Samsung’s 5G-ready CBRS massive MIMO radio

Through use of IBW and OBW, Samsung’s 64T64R solution maximizes cell capacity and coverage to help operators reach more homes and businesses, while improving service levels. And for operators seeking to deploy CBRS to reduce mobile cellular coverage gaps or enhancing capacity, massive MIMO offers a cost-efficient solution.

C-Band Expertise and Solution Flexibility

As 5G deployments continue, another mid-band spectrum’s availability—C-Band—will be critical in the U.S. With the FCC scheduled to auction 280MHz in the C-Band in December 2020, and commercial use expected to start as early as 2021, Samsung is prepared for this next phase. Samsung is already innovating in this area, including built-in flexibility to drive commercial mid-band solutions and develop new products supporting C-Band (3.7-3.98GHz).

Samsung’s experience in commercially deploying tens of thousands of mid-band Massive MIMO radios in Korea offers U.S. operators a proven source of C-Band-based solutions in action.  We look forward to continuing to lead in this space, and in mid-band’s evolution, to help US operators use this technology in upcoming trials and commercialization.
