Dutch company Avy has launched its Drone Response Network, combining docking stations with autonomous aircraft that have vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities.

The network offers drone coverage in a certain area, enabling instant deployment to support medical deliveries or emergency services during critical incidents.

First flights are expected to take place in the first quarter of 2022.

The network uses the Avy Aera autonomous drone that can carry up to 3 kg of medical goods over a distance of 100 km. It can operate year round, in rain and winds up to 45 kph, and is designed to meet the latest European Union drone regulations and United Nation requirements for aerial transport of medical goods.

For medical delivery, the drone is equipped with Aera’s Medkit, which has a four-liter capacity and is fitted with sensors for immediate assessment. Medical products remain cooled at 2-6 degrees for at least 100 minutes in an ambient temperature of up to 40° C.

The Avy Drone Response network is suitable for both urban and rural areas, delivering medicines, blood products, vaccines and other medical applications safer and twice as fast as road transportation, and is more environmentally friendly. It is expected to make a substantial contribution to achieving the goal of connecting hospitals and laboratories by air by 2023.

The Avy Aera can also be integrated with a high zoom RGB and thermal camera system and used to quickly detect wildfires, spot people in distress at sea, monitor oil spills and assess the situation on the ground.

NES to equip cable lay vessel for zero emission operations - Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

Ship engineering company Peak Marine Tech AS has awarded Norwegian Electric Systems AS (NES) a contract to supply the battery and control systems to enable zero emission cable lay operations from the converted Fjord Connector cable lay vessel owned by Seaworks Kabel AS.

Under the contract, NES will deliver a complete battery system and upgrade all control and automation systems on board the vessel, plus equip it to enable battery charging while at port. NES has not disclosed the value of the contract.

“This project epitomises NES’ core competence and technology extremely well. In short, we will help to upgrade a vessel in order to realise significant reductions in operating cost and emission levels,” says Geir Larsen, managing director of NES.

The Fjord Connector is currently undergoing conversion from a seismic support vessel to a cable lay vessel designed for installation of fibreoptic subsea cables.

Martin Aasheim_NES (left) Stian AndrĂš Larsen_Peak Marine Tech AS (right)

Upgrading Fjord Connector with new battery pack, smart control system and charging infrastructure will enable it for zero emission cable lay operations. The vessel will charge batteries quayside at night, utilise hybrid propulsion when sailing offshore, and then cut all equipment when on site to allow for optimal load on the generator which in turn will enable zero emission cable lay operations.

“This type of operating patter will reduce our fuel consumption substantially, including the inherent environmental benefits it offers. We look forward to cooperating with NES to upgrade the Fjord Connector,” says Stian AndrĂš Larsen, General Manager at Peak Marine Tech AS.

NES will supply the equipment in the second quarter of 2022. It will be delivered to the Polish shipyard that is responsible for converting the Fjord Connector.

“From NES’ perspective, this is a non-complex project but one that provides excellent benefits to the vessel operator, which is very dedicated to continuously work for sustainable solutions for its fleet and operations,” says Martin Aasheim, sales manager at NES.

Peak Marine Tech AS is a part of Peak Group, and deliver project management for newbuilding, redesign and modification projects, in addition to deck equipment, inspections and surveys. Innovation and sustainability are key factors in all Peak Marine Tech’s services and products.

“We focus on providing the latest environmental developments to support our clients’ sustainability objectives and success,” says Stian AndrĂš Larsen. Peak Marine Tech has offices in Bergen and Groningen, Netherlands.

NES, which is a subsidiary of Oslo-listed HAV Group ASA, will design, assemble, and test the systems at its headquarters at Godvik outside Bergen, Norway, before shipping it to the Polish yard.

Gabelli and Jewish Business Network launch education effort - Westfair Online

Billionaire investment advisor Mario Gabelli and the Jewish Business Network (JBN), a Dobbs Ferry nonprofit that describes itself as an organization that “assists Jewish business leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs with developing meaningful relationships and business growth enhanced with Jewish values and traditions,” have announced the launch of The Mario J. Gabelli Business Education Institute.

Gabelli said he hopes it will serve as a resource for the next generation of business leaders.

Mario Gabelli
Mario Gabelli

“I chose the Jewish Business Network for this new initiative because of its demonstrated reach among Westchester’s business leaders and, more importantly, its emphasis on business and historical ethics and the work-life-community balance,” Gabelli said.

Gabelli expressed a belief that the education of young business leaders must utilize a holistic approach that includes not only technical expertise, but concern for the family and community at large.

JBN said that the institute will offer opportunities for business owners and professionals to gain the knowledge, tools and expertise to advance in their respective careers while maintaining positive interpersonal relationships and a healthy work-life-community balance.

“Through interactive forums, roundtable discussions, mentoring and educational courses, participants will explore relevant business topics, enhanced with Jewish business ethics, values and philanthropy,” JBN explained.

A page about the Gabelli Business Education Institute on the JBN website as of Dec. 28 did not show course details but did state, “Many of the courses are approved by the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the bar association.”

Gabelli has appeared at JBN events to discuss investing and the state of the economy. His Greenwich-based GAMCO Investors, Inc. in November reported financial results for the third quarter of 2021. For that period, GAMCO reported revenues of $75.9 million compared with $61.5 million for the third quarter of 2020. Net income for the third quarter was $29.2 million compared with $16.4 million in 2020. It had assets under management, as of Sept. 30, 2021, of $33.5 billion compared with $29.7 billion as of Sept. 30, 2020.

GAMCO describes itself as being known for its research-driven approach to equity investing. GAMCO says it conducts its investment advisory business principally through two subsidiaries: GAMCO Asset Management Inc., which has approximately 1,400 institutional and private wealth separate accounts, principally in the U.S., and Gabelli Funds LLC, which has more than three dozen funds. GAMCO says it serves a broad client base including institutions, intermediaries, offshore investors, private wealth and direct retail investors.

EU expert network discusses microbial risks - Food Safety News

Topics involving Salmonella, E. coli and Campylobacter were discussed at the latest meeting of a European network dedicated to microbial risk assessment.

The Scientific Network on Microbiological Risk Assessment (MRA Network) has 25 European Union member states as well as Switzerland and Norway as observer countries. It is coordinated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

An online meeting covered a range of activities including risk ranking of pathogens in different foods, Salmonella in wild boar meat, Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC) in flour, bacterial pathogens on fresh fruit and vegetables, Campylobacter and E. coli in broiler meat, and Anisakidae in fish.

Norway showed a report on risk ranking in foods. The six highest-ranked pathogens were Toxoplasma gondii, Campylobacter, Echinococcus multilocularis, enterohaemorrhagic E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella. Fresh produce was among the main food vehicles for 12 of the 20 pathogens that were tracked. Drinking water was associated with eight, and five were linked to raw milk products.

Cheese, produce and meat
France presented a risk ranking method of microbiological hazards in raw milk cheeses. The opinion on raw milk cheeses is set to be published by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES).

Germany revealed the results of a risk assessment on STEC in flour and on reclaimed wastewater. The latter work looked at risks to human health from Salmonella, STEC and Listeria monocytogenes from consuming raw fruits and vegetables irrigated by reclaimed wastewater.

Sweden presented the results of a risk assessment on Salmonella Choleraesuis, which had not been detected in Swedish pigs since the 1970’s. However, in 2020, it was found on a farm in the south of the country and in wild boars in the same area. An assessment found the risk of Salmonella Choleraesuis being present in meat of healthy wild boars when shot was low.

Estonia updated the situation of enteric infections and trends within recent years. Other studies found Campylobacter in Estonian and imported products decreased compared with earlier periods. Over time there was a significant decrease in the prevalence and concentration of Campylobacter in Estonian broiler chicken meat products.

Austrian officials gave a presentation on the comparison of Campylobacter genotypes on three broiler farms after a 5-year period. Results showed a variety of genotypes among these farms and a change within each farm over time.

E. coli, anisakis and raw milk
Switzerland presented results of a study on E. coli sequence type 131. It is suspected that infections may occur because of contaminated food. A total of 200 Swiss chicken samples were bought in retail stores in a region of the country in 2020. After analysis, 25 were found to be positive for the E. coli sequence 131.

Belgium described findings from research on the occurrence of anisakidae in 415 fish samples from 36 different species that identified an overall prevalence of 53 percent in the viscera and 27 percent in the muscles. Routine control of this parasite in the fish industry is done by the candling technique, where fish fillets are placed on a light table to detect and remove the larvae. When applied on 651 samples and compared to the reference standard, the estimated sensitivity of candling was 32 percent.

Dutch officials spoke about the use of time-temperature indicators (TTIs) instead of a printed date mark and a scientific opinion on raw drinking milk, which was requested as part of implementing new national rules for this product in the Netherlands.

The next MRA network meeting is planned for autumn 2022.

Network glitch disrupts Sun Country early-morning flights, causing scheduling bumps all day - Minneapolis Star Tribune

A computer network outage forced Sun Country Airlines to cancel all of its flights before 8 a.m. Monday morning, and the disruption led to delays for most of its passengers the rest of the day.

The outage occurred at a data-system provider used by Minneapolis-based Sun Country and other airlines. It led Sun Country to resort to manual processes to clear flights for a few hours.

By 10:30 a.m., Sun Country had been able to get all but one of its flights scheduled after 8 a.m. into the air. That flight, headed to Fort Myers, Fla., in the afternoon was canceled for reasons unrelated to the network disruption, Sun Country said.

Passengers who were affected by the canceled flights were issued full refunds and fees for changing flights were waived, the airline said.

Coming so early, the cancellations had knock-on effects to Sun Country's operations throughout the day as the airline tried to get back on schedule and re-book disrupted passengers.

Many flights were delayed. Separate flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Phoenix and St. Louis, for instance, took off and landed just over an hour late Monday afternoon.

A late afternoon flight to Seattle took off a half-hour late but was scheduled to make up time en route, according to FlightAware, a flight information service.

"We anticipate a few delays as we continue to move into the evening, but hope to maintain the operation and get folks onboard and to their destinations as close to schedule as possible," a Sun Country spokeswoman said late Monday afternoon.

Some Sun Country customers complained on Twitter about difficulties getting details from the airline's call center about the status of flights.

The problem emerged amid a surge of flight cancellations over Christmas weekend as airlines contended with staffing shortages as people became ill with the fast-spreading omicron variant of COVID-19.

Shares in Sun Country fell 2.6% Monday, tumbling with other airline stocks on a day when the broad market indexes rose 1% or more. Shares in Delta Air Lines, the dominant carrier at MSP and which canceled about 200 flights due to weather and virus effects, fell nearly 1%.

Sun Country cancels early flights, places blame on network outage - MPR News

Sun Country Airlines canceled all of its domestic flights Monday morning, saying a third-party system outage is affecting all of its operations.

In a press release, Sun Country Airlines said they received reports of a temporary third-party network system outage affecting all Sun Country flights, as well as the flights of many other airlines worldwide.

“As a result, this morning, domestic flights scheduled before 8 a.m. CT were canceled and passengers were issued full refunds and waived change fees,” the release said. “Currently, our Operations team is executing our approved manual process and working closely with the FAA to clear flights for takeoff.”

Airline officials said they will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Sun Country reported a similar outage in July, and it took hours to restore service. The airline says it is waiving change fees for flights through Tuesday.

NESN regional sports network removed from DISH TV - Vermont Biz

Vermont Business Magazine New England Sports Network (NESN) was removed from DISH TV Monday night, affecting access in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Connecticut. With this removal, DISH TV customers no longer have access to NESN. NESN is the primary local broadcaster of the Red Sox and Bruins.

“The current Regional Sports Network (RSN) model is fundamentally broken,” said Brian Neylon, group president, DISH TV. “This model requires nearly all customers to pay for RSNs when only a small percentage of customers actually watch them. As the cost of these channels continues to escalate and a la carte viewing options become ever more accessible, we no longer think it makes sense to include them in our TV lineup.”

“We have offered multiple solutions to keep NESN on DISH TV while providing the best value to all our customers,” added Neylon. “We made an offer for NESN to be a separate standalone package, similar to premium channels like HBO or Showtime —  they refused. We also offered NESN to be part of select DISH programming packages, but they refused this as well.”

DISH said in a statement that it has offered these consumer-friendly alternatives to NESN, but they have been unwilling to accept them and insist on continuing with the old, broken model. DISH remains open to working with NESN to offer sports content in a way that provides choice and value to all customers.

DISH customers can visit DISHPromise.com for more information.

Local woman wins Food Network challenge - KOLO

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Roberta Cota-Montgomery won the Food Network’s “Christmas Cookie Challenge”.

‘I honestly did not think I had a chance. At all,” admitted Cota-Montgomery.

She beat out five other bakers from around the country, including two other finalists. The show was recorded in Tennessee back in June, but it just aired earlier this month.

“We had to keep it a secret for seven months,” exclaimed Cota-Montgomery.

She was discovered thanks to her Instagram page, where she posts pictures of her creations. She opened the Sugared Squirrel back in 2017, after being urged on by her friends and family.

“Could you make some cookies for my birthday? Could you make some cookies for this baby shower,” explained Cota-Montgomery. “And so it started to kind of snowball.”

She now runs the business out of her own home in Gardnerville, and she’s usually booked out two months in advance.

“I have one oven. And I have about a 3x3 counter-space that I do all of these thousands of cookies a year on,” said Cota-Montgomery.

The win has gained her a lot of notoriety, and brought some national attention to her small Nevada town.

“I have people walking up to me at the grocery store and congratulating me, and I’m just not used to it. Sometimes I get kind of embarrassed,” admitted Cota-Montgomery. But it’s really cool. Everybody’s been so supportive.”

She plans to use the $10,000 prize to finally take a honeymoon with her husband, after twenty years of marriage.

'Tidal Network', Tlingit & Haida's new broadband internet service, coming to Wrangell - Alaska Public Media News

Wrangell from above in June 2018. (Photo by David Purdy/KTOO)

Southeast Alaska’s regional Tribal government will pilot its new broadband internet program in Wrangell, which it says will, eventually, be available to everyone on the island.

Last year, the Federal Communications Commission opened up a special program to allow rural Tribes to secure broadband licenses to improve connectivity. Hundreds of Tribes applied, more than a third in Alaska.

The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska announced on December 17 that it got its license. The FCC has granted the regional Tribe exclusive use of a mid-band broadband spectrum in a number of Southeast Alaska communities.

Chris Cropley, one of the Tribal council’s network architects, says the license is for the 2.5 gigahertz spectrum: the same tech used by cell phone LTE networks.

“We’re starting in Wrangell,” Cropley said. “It’s perfect – it’s the Goldilocks, as they say. It’s got everything going for it. We’ve got a lot of people there, relatively, we own the 2.5 [GHz spectrum] there, and we have funding for it.”

The Tribe is calling its broadband service Tidal Network. It will just be home internet, not mobile data service. But it will still need to build its own towers, so that wireless internet can be broadcast directly to homes and businesses that don’t already have reliable internet access.

“Anywhere that’s already served, we’re not interested in serving,” Cropley said. “So if you have a cable modem to your house, fiber optic to your house, if you’ve got good service to your home or are downtown, we’re not really super interested in replacing that with something else. We’re not looking to displace GCI or ACS or AT&T or anybody.”

Wrangell is ideal because there are people with spotty service, but it’s not such a remote community that the Tribe would struggle to get people and equipment to town. Cropley said residents living towards the southern end of the 14-mile stretch of Zimovia Highway would be good candidates for Tidal Network.

Once the service is in place, Tlingit & Haida will be required to “defend” it – meaning they have to offer internet service to 80% of the area’s population within the first two years of holding the license, and full-coverage after five years. But that doesn’t mean people have to take the new provider up on the offer.

Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska began working on getting its license back in 2019. And federal pandemic relief it has received since will help pay for the project.

“We are buying two what we call COWs – cell on wheels,” he said. “They are towers on a trailer with a generator and a little cabinet underneath, and they extend out. We’re able to stand them up, and they have radio microwave on them and they accept fiber optic and we’re able to wire them up or wireless them and begin to provide service on those towers.”

Permanent towers can cost $500,000 to $600,000 each and come with miles of red tape.

The pieces are already in place to get started now, though. Cropley said he has a multi-million dollar budget headed to Wrangell for the pilot broadband project, but declined to say precisely how much.

Once the details are worked out, Tidal Network will operate in Wrangell as a subscription service with different plans, like any other internet provider. The goal is to provide the best possible internet at the lowest possible price.

“We’re just looking at finding the most people with the least internet or no internet, ideally, and providing them with internet where they didn’t have before, where they had to use a satellite,” he said.

The pilot project in Wrangell is just that: a test. It’ll help flesh out the program – from the tech itself to collaboration with other vendors, policies and provide training to Tidal Network employees.

The process will take time, and investment.

“There’s a reason that somebody isn’t already doing this, right?” Cropley said. “There’s no gold mine at the end of the road here. It is a service.”

Cropley says they hope to have the Tidal Network up and running by spring 2022. And after piloting the program in Wrangell, the service could expand to more than 20 other Southeast Alaska communities in the coming years.

Sony, Zee lock India merger to create mega TV network - Reuters

BENGALURU, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Sony's (6758.T) India unit has finalised a deal with local rival Zee Entertainment (ZEE.NS) to merge their television channels, film assets and streaming platforms, joining forces to take on the likes of Netflix and Disney in India.

India, still heavy on direct-to-home TV entertainment, has in the past few years seen a surge of competition from streaming platforms including Netflix Inc (NFLX.O), Amazon.com Inc's Prime Video and Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) Hotstar.

The Sony-Zee alliance, with about 75 news, entertainment, sports and movie channels, now stands to overtake Disney's Star India as the country's biggest player. read more

The combined entity, which will be nearly 51% owned by Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) and 3.99% by Zee's founders, will feature popular channels such as Sony MAX and Zee TV, and streaming platforms like ZEE5 and SonyLIV.

SPNI will have a cash balance of $1.5 billion at deal close, including an infusion by its own shareholders and the promoters of Zee, the companies said.

Zee's top boss, Punit Goenka, will be named as the CEO and managing director of the merged entity, which will be publicly listed in India.

The move is likely to ease shareholder pressure for a management reshuffle at Zee, including for the removal of CEO Goenka from the board amid corporate governance concerns. read more

Most of the combined company's board will be nominated by the Sony Group and include current SPNI CEO N.P. Singh as chairman of Sony Pictures India, a division of SPNI parent Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE).

Singh said he will oversee SPE's investments in India and identify opportunities to expand Sony's footprint in the country, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.

Wednesday's announcement follows a 90-day due diligence period that closed on Dec. 21, and while the parties have signed definitive agreements, deal close is subject to certain regulatory approvals.

Zee's shares, which rocketed 35% to a market capitalisation of nearly $4.5 billion when the deal was announced in September, seesawed in volatile trade early on Wednesday.

Government of Canada helps equip farmers with tools and knowledge to increase organic farming practices - Yahoo Finance

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

REGINA, SK, Dec. 21, 2021 /CNW/ - Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an investment of up to $297,330 for the Prairie Organic Development Fund (PODF) to enable farmers to adopt best practices in organic farming production. This funding will provide farmers with tools and support to incorporate organic farming practices that help meet the growing demand for organic foods in Canada.

This investment will help PODF deliver its Canada Organic Ingredient Strategy, which transfers specialized skills, knowledge and best practices to existing organic farmers and those interested in adopting more organic production methods. PODF will also raise awareness and understanding about the benefits of organic farming to help strengthen public trust in Canada's agriculture and agri-food system.

Through this project, PODF will offer business extension tools and skills development to farmers across Canada through producer conferences and webinars, podcasts, online agronomic tools and training to support the adoption of organic best practices.

This initiative will help Canadian farmers to benefit from increased knowledge and skills in organic farming methods, which can improve soil health and boost farm resilience in the face of changing markets and climate change.

The Government of Canada has announced over $550 million in new programming to enhance sustainability and mitigate climate change. This includes the Agricultural Climate Solutions (ACS) Living Labs program, which is creating a Canada-wide network of regional collaborations made up of farmers, scientists and other sectoral stakeholders to engage in co-development, evaluation and adoption of beneficial management practices to better store carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Also under the ACS is the On-Farm Climate Action Fund stream, which will encourage more farmers to adopt and implement beneficial management practices that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon sequestration in the areas of nitrogen management, cover cropping and rotational grazing. It also includes the Agricultural Clean Technology Program, which supports the adoption and development of cleaner, more energy-efficient equipment, including grain dryers, in the agriculture and agri-food sector.

Quotes

"As consumer interest in organic food continues to grow, we need to ensure that our farmers have the knowledge and skills to meet that increasing demand. This investment will help grow the Canadian organic agriculture sector and address market demands by providing support to farmers who want to incorporate more organic farming techniques in their operations."

- The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

"This investment will accelerate the adoption of organic best practices among farmers and increase the supply and quality of organic grains, fruits and vegetables, and livestock, fostering the expansion of the Canadian organic food processing sector. The development of the organic sector creates opportunities for Canadian farmers and processors to meet the increasing demand for organic food domestically and internationally."

- Marla Carlson, Program Manager, Prairie Organic Development Fund

Quick Facts

  • The funding announced today is provided through the AgriCompetitiveness Program, one of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership's federally delivered programs, which helps leverage, coordinate and build on existing capacity, share best practices, provide mentorship opportunities, agriculture awareness, farm business management, and farm safety information and tools.

  • The Prairie Organic Development Fund is a not-for-profit organization that is engaged in a national project to enhance the development and growth of organic agriculture across Canada.

  • Canada's organic farming sector is valued at $8 billion and is the sixth largest in the world. Demand for organics in Canada is increasing at a rate of 8.7% annually, and despite increases in Canadian organic production, the growth in global and Canadian markets continues to outpace supply.

Mobile providers to shut down 3G network; what you need to know to stay connected - HOI ABC

(Gray News) - It may be time to upgrade your cell phone to potentially avoid losing service.

According to the FCC, mobile providers are shutting down their 3G networks that rely on older technology. They are trying to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G.

When this happens, 3G phones and certain older 4G mobile devices will be unable to make or receive calls and texts, including calls to 911 or use data services.

The FCC said the timing to phase out 3G services will vary by company and could change, so consult your provider for the most up-to-date information.

Here’s a look at the planned dates for completing the shutdowns, according to the FCC, though the process for each carrier could begin sooner:

  • AT&T announced that it will finish shutting down its 3G network by February 2022.
  • T-Mobile announced that it will finish shutting down Sprint’s 3G CDMA network by March 31, 2022, and Sprint’s 4G LTE network by June 30, 2022. It also announced it will shut down T-Mobile’s 3G UMTS network by July 1, 2022, but has not yet announced a shutdown date for its 2G network.
  • Verizon announced that will finish shutting down its 3G network by Dec. 31, 2022.

This will impact any device that uses the 3G network and is not limited to mobile phones.

This means certain medical devices, tablets, smart watches, vehicle SOS services, home security systems and other connected products could be affected.

Some devices may only require a software update, or you may need to upgrade to a newer device to ensure you can stay connected.

Check your mobile provider’s website to see if your device is affected.

Ford, Honda latest to meet pledge to equip nearly all vehicles with AEB - Repairer Driven News

jaringankabar.blogspot.com

Ford and Honda equipped more than 95 percent of their light vehicles with automatic emergency braking (AEB) in the 12 months that ended Aug. 31, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced.

At the same time, four manufacturers put the safety technology into customers’ hands less than two-thirds of the time, IIHS said.

The results are part of the most recent reports filed by 20 OEMs on their progress toward meeting their voluntary pledge to equip nearly all of the light vehicles they produce for the U.S. market with AEB by Sept. 1, 2022.

“With the Ford and Honda brands hitting the target, this essential safety feature is now on a huge number of affordable, top-selling vehicles,” IIHS President David Harkey said in a statement.

Ford, at nearly 14 percent, and Honda, at more than 9 percent, own nearly one-fourth of the North American market for new light vehicles.

Ford, and its Lincoln division, had increased its percentage of AEB-equipped light vehicles from 91 percent to 96 percent, and Honda, and its Acura division, from 94 percent to 96 percent.

With the recent addition of Ford and Honda, 12 of the 20 OEMs are ahead of schedule in meeting the pledge they made in March 2016, IIHS said.

OEMs submit a report yearly through a submission to the Federal Register Docket, making their progress status a public record. The voluntary commitment was brokered by IIHS and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The automakers that met the 95-percent target in previous years are Audi, BMW, Hyundai/Genesis, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota/Lexus, Volkswagen and Volvo.

Those that need to make the most progress to meet the goal are General Motors, Stellantis, Jaguar Land Rover and Porsche, four OEMs that equipped fewer than two-thirds of their production with AEB, IIHS said.

Among the four, JLR made the most progress, rising from zero percent to 60 percent year-to-year. Stellantis reported 43 percent, up from 14 percent; Porsche 59 percent, up from 55 percent; and GM 58 percent, up from 47 percent.

Those four OEMs earned a prodding from David Friedman, vice president of advocacy for Consumer Reports.

“It is good news for consumers that city-speed AEB now comes standard across most models, but Stellantis, GM and the other lagging companies really need to pick up the pace,” Friedman said in a statement.

IIHS noted that although Mitsubishi and Nissan/Infiniti missed the target, both installed AEB on 9 of 10 vehicles they produced last year. Kia just missed that mark, equipping 89 percent of its vehicles with the technology.

The institute also credited Maserati with making significant strides, raising its percentage of AEB-equipped vehicles to 72 percent from 48 percent in the previous year. Maserati is a part of Stellantis.

“The final sprint these lagging automakers are making shows that a rapid rollout of advanced safety features is possible,” Harkey said.

As the technology becomes more prevalent, and older, non-AEB vehicles are retired from the roadway, repairers might see fewer vehicles damaged in crashes, but encounter greater complexity on the vehicles that do crash. One of the most significant benefits experienced by both consumers and carriers will be in the form of reduced bodily injury as a result of the losses that occur.

Separate from the manufacturers’ commitment, Consumer Reports tracks the percentage of models that have AEB as standard equipment across all trim levels. Several report making the technology standard equipment on 100 percent of their models, but the numbers can be deceiving; Subaru’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) package is not available on models with standard transmissions, but those vehicles accounted for a tiny fraction of overall production.

CR’s Friedman called on NHTSA to go further by setting standards “that ensure all automakers’ AEB systems work effectively at highway speeds and stop for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users both during the day and at night.”

Currently, NHTSA sets performance standards for the timing of driver alerts to an impending collision as part of its 5-Star Safety Ratings program. In addition, the AEB must involve at least an advanced rating in the IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention evaluation. OEMs must meet those standards as part of their current commitment.

The IIHS noted that many manufacturers’ standard systems earn a superior rating in its testing. “A significant portion of new vehicles can also detect and avoid pedestrians — a requirement for the IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards,” the institute said.

AEB technology is coming to heavier vehicles, too. OEMs have committed to installing autobraking on all vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,501-10,000 pounds by September 2025.

Six automakers produce such vehicles. Among them, Ford reported equipping 75 percent of its vehicles with AEB, Stellantis 13 percent and Nissan/Inifniti 12 percent.

1 Subaru’s driver assistance package that includes AEB is standard on all new vehicles with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), but it is not offered on vehicles with a manual transmission. Three Subaru models come with standard manual transmission and require an extra charge for a CVT. Under the terms of the voluntary commitment, automakers may defer equipping vehicles with manual transmissions with AEB until the 2024-25 production year.
2 Percentage carried over from earlier report. Companies are not required to submit updates after they meet the target.
3 Percentage accounts for the automaker’s 2022 models for which specifications are known as of Dec. 9, 2021, but not yet all 2022 models offered by the automaker. CR lacks specifications for all models from Fiat (Stellantis), one model from Ford, four models from Jeep, three models from Mazda, seven models from Nissan, and six models from Porsche.
4 Jaguar Land Rover has not reported that all of its AEB-equipped models conform to the performance requirements outlined in the voluntary commitment.
