Networking for Law Firms During COVID-19 | Daily Business Review - Law.com

Julie Talenfeld of BoardRoom PR. Julie Talenfeld of BoardRoom PR.

It’s an unfortunate truth, but trauma fosters connection. And though we can’t shake hands or go to a networking event during this coronavirus pandemic, there are still ways we can even forge a new business collaboration, client, or partnership. After all, word of mouth is the original marketing—for both law firms and everyone and everything else.

Reach out to a prospective client, or a new possible business relationship, through the lens of our current shared experience. Now is a rife time to connect with someone on LinkedIn that you have always wanted to meet, but never had a good reason to reach out. Coronavirus has brought so much negativity into our world—why not channel it in a positive way? Make it your networking ice breaker if and when appropriate.

Look for unique angles that your firm can speak to regarding COVID-19 when making an overture. Because it is always developing and changing, it can be difficult to keep up. Consider reaching out to someone about the particular challenges your shared area (town, city, etc.) are experiencing, and stay abreast of your area’s rules and regulations so you can offer a legal position to your network.

Our traditional means to network aren’t available to us right now, so get creative! Don’t be afraid to extend regards or an olive branch; if it’s genuine, it will undoubtedly feel appreciated on the other side, regardless of what follows. Consider making a list of 10 people—prospects, business connections, and more for your law practice—you want to connect with over traditional means: lunch, drinks, an office meeting. Then, push yourself to get creative and think of the best way to reach out amidst COVID-19. We suggest connecting with a real estate financier you’ve been trying to meet, an insurance executive seeking business interruption insurance, or even a wealth manager who works with investors, etc. Remember that your network still exists, it just needs to be accessed differently at this time.

Another great idea is to publish content beyond that of your company website. Using your personal Facebook page, or a local publication or news station (accessed with the help of a great publicist!) can bring your firm back into the public consciousness. Leverage a proactive stance when approaching media outlets, and make sure your content is readily shareable across your network. This way, you’ll ideally receive inbound messages from folks who would like to connect with you.

In the same fashion, utilize this time for reflection. Thank a previous client for their business. Let your direct report know you think highly of them, and they are transitioning to remote work well. Reflect on your relationships, new and old, personal and professional, and communicate your feelings to the person on the other side, who is—of course—at least six feet away.

It is so easy to feel isolated right now. Remember we are truly alone together. This is a great time to reach out to acquaintances, whether it be in the neighborhood or even on LinkedIn, from a place of common ground. Mr. Rogers said it best, “It’s a lovely day in the neighborhood.” So appreciate it — and embrace it.

Entrepreneurs, Look to Your Network to Help You Through the Pandemic - Harvard Business Review

Derek Jeter was great, and MLB Network will spend 64 hours of programming to show you why - USA TODAY

Sure, some sports are back. But "sports" as we know them are largely still on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic. Today is Day 79 without sports. ⚾️

We're closing in on three months in various states of sheltering at home, and boy, does MLB Network want to twist that knife a bit for an increasingly restless yet still largely captive audience.

See, baseball's state-run network is bombarding you with 64 hours of programming on Derek Jeter, who did nothing but show up and play baseball for a couple of decades and win a few championships. Yet, in various dark corners of this amorphous place we call The Internet, you'd think he was Luis Sojo with a better jawline.

Well, we're here to deliver the backlash to the backlash to the backlash.

Derek Jeter was an awesome baseball player.

There.

No doublethink is necessary here.

Yeah, we hear you: He was defensively challenged as a shortstop for much of his career. He spoke in painful platitudes while maintaining a public veneer of the modern, personality-averse megastar. The gift baskets were weird.

But good god, let's not overthink this.

Friday marks the 25th anniversary of his major league debut, hence the reason for the network bombarding us with The Flip, Mr. November, Jeffrey Maier and other assorted high-water marks in Jeter's career.

It was a pretty good career!

Let's get beyond the 3,465 hits that some might reduce to "compiling" and the meh defense and the many championship rings and explore other reasons why Jeter was great:

Jeter got on base: Since everybody hates batting average, let's linger over the fact the man reached base at a .377 clip over 20 seasons. He finished sixth or better in OBP five times, including a .438 mark in 1999, which by WAR was his best season. Alas, he finished sixth in MVP voting that year. Let's just say it was, ahem, a different era.

Jeter posted: In 17 of his 19 full major league seasons, Jeter played in at least 131 games, only a freak collision at third base in 2003 and a gruesome broken ankle in the 2012 playoffs that robbed him of 2013 sidelining him for extensive stretches. He played at least 148 games in 15 seasons. Not quite Ripken-esque, but nearly as reliable.

Jeter really was Mr. Oct-vember: Let's pause for a moment and recognize a really, really great season of baseball: 158 games played, .308 average, .374 on-base, .838 OPS, 20 homers, 111 runs scored. OK, that's not one season — it's merely Jeter's playoff statistics over 16 postseasons. Yeah, the clutch thing wasn't merely #narrative.

Jeter killed everybody: And within those statistics are an almost entire league of shattered dreams. A list of the teams Jeter's Yankees eliminated at least once from the postseason: Rangers, Orioles, Indians, Red Sox, Mariners, Athletics, Twins, Angels, Phillies, Mets, Braves and Padres. That's more than half the AL and 12 of all 30 major league teams. Only the Tigers (2006, '11 and '12) had his number.

So get outside this weekend, if you can. If not, don't hate. Watch and appreciate.

Sports video of the day

There's another big baseball anniversary today: Ten years since Roy Halladay's perfect game. His tragic final days can't erase his immense impact on the game and dozens of teammates.

Cisco grabs ThousandEyes for network-intelligence technology - Network World

Cisco said it intends to acquire network intelligence software provider ThousandEyes for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 2010, the 400-employee ThousandEyes firm offers a cloud-based software package that analyzes performance of local and wide-area networks and the internet.  Utilizing its world-wide insights into service networks the company also tracks ISP, cloud and collaboration application performance via a family of intelligent cloud, enterprise and endpoint agents.

“ThousandEyes’ technology warns us when a user’s experience is less than ideal and can pinpoint where those failures were caused. With thousands of agents deployed throughout the Internet, ThousandEyes’ platform has an unprecedented understanding of the Internet and grows more intelligent with every deployment,” wrote Todd Nightingale, senior vice president and general manager with Cisco in a blog post about the acquisition.

“The ThousandEyes acquisition will enable deeper and broader visibility to pin-point deficiencies and improve the network and application performance across all networks your business relies on by enabling end-to-end visibility when accessing cloud applications,” Nightingale stated. “Internet Intelligence won’t just improve networking reliability, but end-to-end application experience.”

Cisco said it envisions embedding ThousandEyes technology in a variety of its products including its AppDynamics application performance, SD-WAN, WebEx and Meraki families to enhance visibility across the enterprise, internet and the cloud.

With the acquisition, common tooling and sharing datasets for application and network health will help remove silos, giving IT teams at Cisco shops real-time visibility into application performance degradation issues, he stated.

The internet helps deliver cloud applications, but it is also the underlying backbone for SD-WAN services so it is key for customers to have the best insights into that network, said Mohit Lad CEO & co-founder of ThousandEyes in a call announcing the deal.

“We provide tons of network intelligence, and when that is married with actions such as network planning or failover decisions it's super powerful for users,” Lad said.

In the end how Cisco implements the technology will be key to how successful the acquisition becomes.

“Cisco buying ThousandEyes adds to its network intelligence portfolio," said Lee Doyle principal analyst at Doyle Research and Network World contributor. “ThousandEyes is a leading supplier network performance and internet monitoring, and it will be interesting to see how and where Cisco leverages this capability.”

The acquisition was handled virtually – a first for Cisco – and is expected to close before the end of Cisco’s Q1 FY’21. ThousandEyes will join Cisco's newly formed Networking Services business unit, reporting to Nightingale.  As part of the Networking Services business unit, ThousandEyes CEO Lad will take on the role of GM of ThousandEyes and Co-Founder, CTO Ricardo Oliveira will continue to drive product strategy.

MLB Network airing 64 hours of Jeter moments - MLB.com

It was 25 years ago on Friday that Derek Jeter carried a black Louisville Slugger P72 into the on-deck circle at the long-defunct Seattle Kingdome. It was the only model he’d swing throughout his Major League career, and it was the first plate appearance of a journey that would produce five World Series championships and first-ballot enshrinement in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Jeter went hitless in five at-bats as part of the Yankees’ 8-7, 12-inning loss to the Mariners that day, but there was greatness to come. MLB Network is paying tribute to the silver anniversary of Jeter’s debut with 64 consecutive hours of programming related to the Yankees captain, including 13 signature games, beginning on Friday at 6 a.m. ET.

Derek Jeter's online auction collection

“I remember after the game walking with my dad [Charles], and we went to McDonald's because there were no restaurants open,” Jeter recalled earlier this year. “It was the first time I was playing in a dome. Other than the statistics of that day, I can't tell you anything else because I don't remember. It was all a blur.”

After a morning spent airing highlights, MLB Network at 12 p.m. ET will air the game Jeter recorded his first Major League hit, on May 30, 1995, against the Mariners.

Bob Costas will introduce each of the 13 games and offer commentary about the four games he called, including Game 1 of the 1996 American League Championship Series, Game 5 of the 1996 ALCS, the 2000 MLB All-Star Game at Turner Field and Jeter’s final game at Yankee Stadium in 2014.

“People ask me what game stands out the most,” Jeter said. “It's a little unfair because it's the freshest in my mind. The last game I played in New York was the only game I ever played in New York where we were eliminated, which shouldn't mean anything, right? But the relationship I had with the fan base, it was a playoff-like atmosphere.

“I’ve said time and time again how much respect and gratitude I have for the fan base in New York, the way they treated me -- not only just the final game, but my entire career. It was great to have one last magical moment at Yankee Stadium.”

MLB Tonight (6 p.m. ET on Friday) and Play Ball (9 a.m. ET on Saturday) will extensively cover Jeter’s career, including interviews with Jeter and former teammate Bernie Williams, features, vignettes and highlights.

Here is the programming rundown for ‘Jeter Weekend’:

Cisco snatches up network monitoring company ThousandEyes - FierceTelecom

Cisco announced Thursday afternoon that it was buying network-monitoring company ThousandEyes. Earlier on Thursday, Bloomberg reported that Cisco would pay close to $1 billion to buy ThousandEyes, but Cisco didn't disclose the financial terms.

With ThousandEyes, Cisco will add more reoccurring software and service revenues to its bottom line as it transitions away from relying on just the sale of hardware.

The deal will also increase Cisco's relationships with cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. San Francisco-based ThousandEyes' network intelligence infrastructure-as-a-service agents work across the regions that AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud serve. ThousandEyes monitors vantage points across the cloud providers' regions in order to help them make better data driven decisions.

Blitz Week

Register for FierceTelecom Blitz Week - June 15-18

As the telecom industry moves forward in the age of new technology, FierceTelecom Blitz week addresses the questions of how platforms, providers, and more will modernize to keep up with these fast-paced changes and their current status of implementing these changes. Join us June 15-18 to dive deep into the world of telecom transformation.

RELATED: ThousandEyes looks to multi-cloud environments for better network intelligence

ThousandEyes' cloud agents are external vantage points that are distributed globally across its points of presence, while its enterprise agents are software-based and can be installed on networks, data centers and branch offices.

Increased network visibility is especially important as customers migrate toward multi-cloud environments. Multi-cloud usage is being driven by infrastructure-as-a-service, software-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service use cases. In addition, the dynamic nature of the cloud makes it even harder to proactively monitor networks.

ThousandEyes' enterprise agents can also be deployed on Cisco ISR and ASR Routers in order to optimize WAN from a single vantage point. Cisco has been a customer of ThousandEyes since 2013.

ThousandEyes' endpoint agents are browser-based plug-ins that can installed on end users' laptops and desktops. By running tests through the cloud between cloud agents and enterprise agents, IT teams can use endpoint agents to monitor and measure performance between the cloud regions as well as inter-cloud performance.

Traditional monitoring vendors monitored internal networks, were point-to-point, or worked primarily with Cisco gear.

Having more insight into enterprise and cloud providers' architectures has taken on added importance over the past several months during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reduced the ability for enterprise IT teams to predict, visualize and control operational behavior.

RELATED: ThousandEyes looks to multicloud environments for better network intelligence

ThousandEyes was founded by CEO Mohit Lad and CTO Ricardo Oliveira in 2010 and launched three years later. Its investors include Salesforce Ventures and Sequoia Capital, while Comcast, GitHub and Lyft are among its customers. ThousandEyes, which Crunchbase characterized as an "emerging unicorn," has raised $110 million in financing to date.

Cisco will add ThousandEyes’ capabilities across its core enterprise networking and cloud sectors, and AppDynamics portfolios to provide improved visibility across the enterprise, internet and the cloud networks. Once it passes customary closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close before the end of Cisco’s fiscal first quarter in 2021. ThousandEyes will join Cisco's newly-formed networking services business unit, reporting to Todd Nightingale.

“I’m excited to welcome the ThousandEyes team to Cisco,” said Nightingale, SVP and general manager, Cisco enterprise networking and cloud. “The combination of Cisco and ThousandEyes will enable deeper and broader visibility to pin-point deficiencies and improve the network and application performance across all networks. This will give customers end-to-end visibility when accessing cloud applications, and Internet Intelligence will improve networking reliability and the overall application experience.”

As part of the Networking Services business unit, ThousandEyes's Lad will take on the role of general manager of ThousandEyes while Oliveira will "continue to drive ThousandEyes product vision and innovation strategy," according to Cisco.
