Schools, nonprofits try to equip students with digital tools as pandemic pushes learning online wreg.com
T-Mobile has completely shut down Sprint’s 2.5GHz midband 5G network as the company continues its efforts to merge Sprint’s network with its own following the landmark merger of the two companies earlier this year, via Fierce Wireless.
The shutdown marks the end of a process T-Mobile began earlier this year when it started merging Sprint’s 5G spectrum holdings into its existing network, which began when T-Mobile shut down Sprint’s existing 5G deployment in New York and relaunched it as part of T-Mobile’s 5G network in April. T-Mobile also launched a new 2.5GHz 5G network in Philadelphia at that time, a city where Sprint had not yet offered 5G.
T-Mobile also announced on Tuesday that Sprint’s networks in Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles have already been reactivated as T-Mobile spectrum, too. Still yet to be redeployed are Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Kansas City, Phoenix, and Washington, DC, which previously had Sprint 5G networks.
The integration of the Sprint midband spectrum is a key part of T-Mobile’s 5G strategy, which aims to combine low-band 600MHz spectrum for broad, nationwide 5G coverage with faster but lower-range midband (Sprint’s 2.5GHz network) and short-range mmWave networks for a balance of coverage and speed.
Sprint’s 5G network shutdown will leave owners of early Sprint 5G phones that use older Qualcomm X50 modems — including the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, Galaxy S10 5G, and LG V50 ThinQ 5G — in the lurch, as their phones aren’t new enough to connect to the T-Mobile network. T-Mobile is reportedly offering those customers replacement offers (which vary depending on the device and payment plan specifics).
Newer devices that feature Qualcomm’s X55 modem, like the Galaxy S20 5G lineup, will still be able to access the 2.5GHz networks when they relaunch as part of T-Mobile’s setup (along with the rest of T-Mobile’s low-band and mmWave 5G spectrum).

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House's coronavirus task force, is scheduled to hold a discussion Thursday with the the Journal of the American Medical Association about the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic.
The discussion comes as the U.S. reported more than 50,600 additional coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the largest single-day increase since the beginning of the outbreak, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The record-breaking increase in new coronavirus cases continues to push the U.S. farther beyond what some previously thought was its peak earlier this year.
Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, along with other top U.S. health officials appeared before Congress Tuesday in a hearing held by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
Fauci told the committee that daily new cases in the U.S. could surpass 100,000 new infections per day if the outbreak continues at its current pace.
"I'm very concerned and I'm not satisfied with what's going on because we're going in the wrong direction if you look at the curves of the new cases, so we really have got to do something about that and we need to do it quickly," he told senators Tuesday.

A top-secret communications system used by criminals to trade drugs and guns has been "successfully penetrated", says the National Crime Agency.
The NCA worked with forces across Europe on the UK's "biggest and most significant" law enforcement operation.
Major crime figures were among 746 Europe-wide arrests after messages on EncroChat were intercepted and decoded.
More than two tonnes of drugs, several dozen guns and £54m in suspect cash have been seized, says the NCA.
Officers are said to have prevented people being murdered after covertly monitoring planned attacks and threats to life on the encrypted service.
The NCA says the Europe-wide operation, which lasted over three months and involved police forces across the UK, has had the biggest impact on organised crime gangs it has ever seen.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick, whose force made 132 of the arrests and seized £13.3m in cash, described it as a "game changer".
She said: "This is just the beginning. We will be disrupting organised criminal networks as a result of these operations for weeks and months and possibly years to come."
An estimated 60,000 people, among them up to 10,000 in Britain, subscribed to France-based EncroChat, which has now been taken down.
The system operated on customised Android phones and, according to its website, provided "worry-free secure communications".
Customers had access to features such as self-destructing messages that deleted from the recipient's device after a certain length of time.
There was also panic wipe, where all the data on the device could be deleted by entering a four-digit code from the lock-screen.
The NCA says the messaging system has been used as a "criminal marketplace" to co-ordinate the supply of Class A drugs across the world, and import weapons including assault rifles, sub-machine guns, shotguns, pistols and hand grenades.
Law enforcement agencies began getting data from the site on 1 April after the encryption code is believed to have been cracked in March.
Gangs are also believed to have used the handheld devices to plot attacks on rival groups, plan ways of enforcing drug debts and arrange for money to be laundered.
Threats to life detailed on the site included acid attacks and threats to chop off limbs.
Dozens of organised crime groups have been dismantled, says the NCA, with the bulk of arrests in London and north-west England.
Lockdown "worked in our favour", says the agency, in that many more suspects were at home when they were raided.
Many of those arrested are said to form the "middle tier" of crime gangs while some are described as the "Mr and Mrs Bigs" of the underworld.

EncroChat sold encrypted phones with a guarantee of anonymity, with a range of special features to remove identifying information. The phones themselves cost roughly £900 (€1,000) each, with a subscription costing £1,350 (€1,500) for six months.
Europol said that French police had discovered some of EncroChat's servers were located in the country, and that it was possible to put a "technical device" in place to access the messages.
In June, rumours began to swirl about EncroChat being compromised by law enforcement.
The Netherlands' National Police said that users began to throw away their phones once the company became aware that messages were being intercepted - "but it was too late".
Police had already intercepted millions of messages, some of which have been acted on already - and others that may be used in the future.
In London, those targeted in the Met operation, codenamed "Eternal", are alleged to include members of "high-harm" organised crime networks with longstanding links to violent crime and drug dealing.
Dame Cressida said: "These people are in business to make enormous amounts of money. Many of them lead a very respectable lifestyle - and definitely a high-end lifestyle in fancy houses with big cars going to... clubs and restaurants, splashing the cash sometimes, but sometimes being very discreet about it."
The Met said that earlier this month, its detectives identified a plot by an international drugs and firearms gang to shoot dead a member of a rival network.
According to the force, it managed to prevent the shooting by arresting an individual for conspiracy to murder and seizing a loaded pistol, which was believed to be the planned murder weapon.

One-quarter of this total, or $5 million, will be provided in cash grants to community-based nonprofit organisations that are led by and serve communities of colour in the United States. The company is also pledging to make stronger data and analytics — including data from the LinkedIn Economic Graph — available to governments around the world so they can better assess local economic needs.
Microsoft will use its voice to advocate for public policy innovations that will advance skilling opportunities needed in the changed economy.
Microsoft also announced it is creating a new learning app in Microsoft Teams designed to help employer’s skill and upskill new and current employees as people return to work and as the economy adds jobs.

American Airlines has announced that Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport will be the airline's major trans-Pacific hub as it adjusts its network to cope with decreased demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the airline, Miami International Airport will continue to be the preeminent hub for flights to the Caribbean and Latin America, and PHL will continue to be the primary hub for service to Europe.
The airline said in an announcement on Wednesday that it will adjust its long-haul international schedule for winter 2020 through summer 2021. The airline said it will realign its network in order to improve long-term profitability amid the spread of coronavirus.
The international capacity on long-haul flights during summer 2021 is expected to be down 25% compared to 2019, the airline said.
“COVID-19 has forced us to reevaluate our network,” American’s Chief Revenue Officer Vasu Raja said. “American will have a significantly smaller international network in the year ahead, but we are using this opportunity to hit reset and create a network using the strength of our strategic hubs that we can build and grow upon and be profitable on in this new environment.”
The airline is discontinuing several routes that are expected to show a decrease in demand.
Three trans-Atlantic routes from both Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport will be discontinued, as well as five underperforming routes from Los Angeles International Airport to destinations in Asia and South America.
From DFW Airport, the airline is discontinuing flights to Munich, Germany.

In response to the prolonged downturn in international travel, American expects summer 2021 long-haul international capacity to be down 25% versus 2019. As the airline begins planning for next summer, American will also discontinue several routes that were once popular leisure destinations but are expected to exhibit decreased demand.

As American resets its international network for future growth, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) will be the airline’s major trans-Pacific hub while Miami International Airport (MIA) will continue to be the preeminent hub for flights to the Caribbean and Latin America. Once government restrictions on trans-Atlantic flying subside, PHL will continue to be American’s primary hub for service to Europe.
Earlier this year, American launched its West Coast International Alliance with Alaska Airlines, an innovative partnership to expand its international reach and connectivity for customers. The airline will plan future growth with the strength of this relationship, which includes a large presence and a strong feed in Seattle. As previously announced, American will launch service from Seattle (SEA) to Bangalore and London (LHR) next year, and Alaska also intends to join the oneworld® alliance in 2021. The airline will also seek government approval to move its LAX service to Shanghai to operate out of SEA, which will offer more customers direct access to Asia, utilizing the strength of Alaska’s local presence in the Pacific Northwest.
American will also continue to fly to joint business partners’ hubs. And while some international markets will not return, American anticipates a full schedule to LHR by 2021. The airline will continue to work closely with British Airways to provide an extensive network that allows customers to reach key destinations when they are ready.
“For American, every new partnership means future growth opportunities for our airline. We’re going to rely on our hubs’ greatest strengths with our existing international network, and further integrate into our partners’ hubs to provide connectivity that’s been untapped in the past,” Raja said. “American will be well poised to emerge from this crisis with a stronger network that provides improved connectivity for our customers.”

American Airlines is providing customers additional flexibility by expanding waived change fees for customers booking tickets for any new travel purchased by July 31, 2020. Any first, business, Premium Economy, and Main Cabin tickets purchased on or before July 31, 2020, for future travel will not incur change fees prior to travel. Customers are allowed to change their origin and destination cities as part of this offer. Offer excludes Basic Economy and AAdvantage® award tickets. Customers must pay any fare difference, if applicable, and fare rules may apply depending on the ticket.
