Hamilton Named Georgia Tech Sports Network Football Analyst - Georgia Tech

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech legend and 680 The Fan personality Joe Hamilton has been named color analyst for football broadcasts on the Georgia Tech Sports Network, beginning this season. Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins made the announcement live during “The Locker Room,” the morning drive time show that Hamilton co-hosts daily on 680 AM/93.7 FM The Fan.

Perhaps the most decorated football student-athlete in Georgia Tech history, Hamilton was a four-year starter at quarterback for the Yellow Jackets from 1996-99. As a senior in 1999, he was a consensus first-team All-American, won the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback and finished as runner-up for the Heisman Trophy – the highest that a Yellow Jacket has ever finished in voting for college football’s most prestigious award. He finished his career as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s all-time leader in total offense (10,640 yards), touchdown passes (65) and total touchdowns (83) and was selected as one of 50 members of the ACC’s 50th anniversary team in 2002. In 2014, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

“First, I am happy for Georgia Tech fans everywhere, because I have never met a Tech fan that doesn’t love Joe Hamilton,” Georgia Tech director of broadcasting and play-by-play announcer Andy Demetra said. “But, the reason that Joe is going to be the next color analyst for the Georgia Tech Sports Network is because he has those QB’s eyes. And it became apparent throughout our interview process that he can break down with clarity and sharpness why a play was successful, why it wasn’t, and that’s the essence of what a color commentator does. You package that with all the charisma and magnetism that Joe has and it was very clear to us that he is the guy that we wanted to be with us in the booth.”

Hamilton has been an on-air personality at Atlanta’s 680 The Fan since 2018, first on the mid-morning “Hometeam and Hamilton” show on 680’s sister station, SportsXtra 106.3 FM, before moving to the coveted morning drive time role on “The Locker Room” in 2021.

“It’s very seldom that you get a chance to do something like this, which is why I’m so happy,” Hamilton said. “It’s my alma mater. I bleed Gold and White, there’s no doubt about it. I’m super excited and I cannot wait for toe meets leather.”

The Georgia Tech Sports Network kicks off the 2022 campaign on Monday, Sept. 5 when the Yellow Jackets host Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. and Hamilton, Demetra, sideline reporter Wiley Ballard and hosts Brandon Joseph and Chris Mooneyham will hit the airwaves the flagship station of the Georgia Tech Sports Network, 680 AM/93.7 FM The Fan, and network affiliates across the state of Georgia beginning at 6 p.m.

One America News Network Is About to See Its Distribution Further Dwindle - Vanity Fair

Less than a month after calling liberals “sick demons” who “love killing babies,” One America News host Alison Steinberg attempted to reach across partisan lines Tuesday night while pleading with her political foes to stand with her struggling pro-Trump network in its time of need. “It is absolutely crucial that, for once, we defy the powers that be, that we all come together, set aside our differences in a unified effort so that we can recognize the horrifying danger that lies ahead,” Steinberg said in response to Verizon’s decision to not renew its Fios contract with OAN. According to The New York Times, when Verizon’s move takes effect on Saturday, OAN will have seen its removal from roughly 20 million homes in 2022, as the network was also dropped by DirectTV earlier this year. Steinberg went on to make a direct appeal to viewers experiencing schadenfreude amid OAN’s final days of wide-scale distribution: “If you’re watching this and you’re laughing and scoffing because you think that you’re immune to what’s coming, you just wait. Enjoy your freedoms while you still got ’em.”

With the Verizon announcement last week, the far-right channel—which is owned by Herring Networks and rose to prominence last year after it pushed Trumpworld’s most crackpot election-fraud claims—is slated to lose its last major pay-TV provider and one of its biggest revenue streams. AT&T declared in January that DirecTV would be dropping the network, leading to OAN’s removal from some 15 million homes in April. The Times report noted that OAN will still be available to a few hundred thousand consumers who subscribe to various minor cable providers, including Frontier and GCI Liberty. “I really think this is the death blow for the network,” Scott Robson, a senior research analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence, told the paper.

In another segment protesting Verizon’s decision, OAN host Pearson Sharp called the company a “radical Marxist corporation,” saying, “Over the last few years, we’ve watched as countless independent, freethinking, and conservative organizations were shut down and censored by the radical left. Regrettably, that toxic cancel culture is still alive and well, and it’s coming after One America News.” Sharp, whose most notable on-air moment was perhaps his calling for mass political executions over supposed 2020 election-fraud crimes, also accused the telecom giant of joining a Biden administration plot to “censor and silence” OAN.

Media Matters, a progressive media watchdog that has worked to steer advertisers and cable providers away from OAN by publicizing its most unhinged segments and stunts, praised the Verizon decision in a statement last Thursday. “OAN is a cauldron of conspiracy theories, extremism, and lies,” wrote Media Matters president Angelo Carusone. “It was able to exist all these years in its current form only because it was being subsidized by AT&T/DirecTV and Verizon.… Losing Verizon is like the final nail in the coffin for OAN. No other cable company should throw them a lifeline by picking them up.”

Apple network traffic takes mysterious detour through Russia - The Register

Apple's internet traffic took an unwelcome detour through Russian networking equipment for about twelve hours between July 26 and July 27.

In a write-up for MANRS (Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security), a public interest group that looks after internet routing, Internet Society senior internet technology manager Aftab Siddiqui said that Russia's Rostelecom started announcing routes for part of Apple's network on Tuesday, a practice referred to as BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) hijacking.

BGP is the glue that links multiple networks together to form the internet. Unfortunately, the protocol is too credulous. When an autonomous system (AS) – a group of networks managed by a single entity – announces routes for groups of IP addresses (IP prefixes) that it does not own, internet traffic will generally adapt to those routes if the rogue announcement isn't filtered out.

Some bad route announcements are accidental and a result of something like a configuration blunder, and some announcements are straight-up malicious.

For example, in 2018 cyberthieves used BGP hijacking to meddle with Amazon's Route 53 DNS service and redirect internet traffic from a cryptocurrency website to a phishing site hosted in Russia.

The redirection of Apple's networking traffic began about 2125 UTC on Tuesday, according to Siddiqui, when Rostelecom’s AS12389 network began announcing 17.70.96.0/19, which is part of Apple's 17.0.0.0/8 block and is usually announced as part of the larger 17.0.0.0/9 block.

The routing change was detected by BGPstream.com (Cisco Works), which identified the block as AS714 APPLE-ENGINEERING, US, and by GRIP Internet Intel (GA Tech). And it lasted just over 12 hours.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment and The Register is unaware of any public statement the company may have made about the hijacking of its network traffic.

"It is not clear which services were impacted by this incident," said Siddiqui. "Unless we get more details from Apple or other researchers, we can only guess."

Siddiqui said Rostelecom (AS12389) has been involved in previous BGP hijackings, and emphasized that network operators implement effective route filtering based on reliable information to thwart these shenanigans.

The Register asked MANRS whether anyone there had heard anything from Apple since its post was published and a spokesperson replied, "We have not heard anything from Apple yet on this issue. The MANRS team is reaching out privately to learn more about the incident."

LONDON, July 27 (Reuters) - Britain's rail network suffered major disruption again on Wednesday as staff walked out in a row over pay and conditions, the latest in a wave of industrial unrest as wages fail to keep pace with soaring inflation.

The 24-hour strike by more than 40,000 members of the RMT and TSSA unions forced around half of Britain's rail network to close, with train companies operating a much reduced timetable and some parts of the country having no rail service at all.

Network Rail urged passengers, including commuters, families heading off on summer holidays, and sports fans on their way to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham which begins on Thursday, to only travel if necessary.

Changing working practices during the coronavirus pandemic meant many office workers were able to opt to work from home.

Strike action last month brought Britain's rail network close to a standstill for three days and just last week some key lines running the length of the country were forced to close when record temperatures damaged the track. read more

"Our members are more determined than ever to secure a decent pay rise, job security and good working conditions," RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said in a statement.

"Network Rail have not made any improvement on their previous pay offer and the train companies have not offered us anything new."

The RMT union said it had received an offer of a 4% rise, followed by a possible 4% the following year dependent on staff accepting changes to their contracts.

Another union, ASLEF, representing train drivers said on Wednesday its members at nine rail companies would strike on Aug. 13 over pay, on top of strike action planned for this Saturday.

Inflation in Britain is running at a 40-year high and is expected to reach double digits later this year, driven by surging fuel and food prices.

Soaring inflation and more than 10 years of stagnant real wages have triggered Britain's worst cost-of-living crisis since records began in the 1950s, exacerbating labour tensions across sectors including postal services, health, schools, airports and the judiciary. read more

It has also become a point of contention in the race to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, with the final two candidates, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, vowing to crack down on strike action.

The government last week changed the law to make it easier for businesses to use temporary staff to minimise the impact of strike action. read more

OAN, a Dependable Trump Promoter, Faces a ‘Death Blow’ - The New York Times

After Verizon drops the network at the end of this week, OAN’s cable TV audience will shrink dramatically.

The future of One America News, which established itself as a powerful voice in conservative media by promoting some of the most outlandish falsehoods about the 2020 election, is in serious doubt as major carriers drop it from their lineups and defamation lawsuits threaten to drain its finances.

By the end of this week, the cable network will have lost its presence in some 20 million homes this year. The most recent blow came from Verizon, which will stop carrying OAN on its Fios television service starting Saturday. That will starve the network of a major stream of revenue: the fees it collects from Verizon, which counts roughly 3.5 million cable subscribers. In April, OAN was dropped by AT&T’s DirecTV, which has about 15 million subscribers.

OAN’s remaining audience will be small. The network will soon be available only to a few hundred thousand people who subscribe to smaller cable providers, such as Frontier and GCI Liberty, said Scott Robson, a senior research analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence. OAN also sells its programming directly to users through its OAN Live and KlowdTV streaming platforms, but those products most likely provide a fraction of the revenue generated by traditional TV providers.

“I really think this is the death blow for the network,” Mr. Robson said.

In its statement announcing the termination of its OAN deal, Verizon said only that it had been “unable to reach an agreement to continue carrying One America News,” and made no mention of the public pressure campaigns it faced from activist groups like Media Matters, which had been calling on cable providers to drop the network. A company spokeswoman declined to comment further on Tuesday.

DirecTV also did not elaborate on its reasons for dropping OAN, saying in January that the move was part of a “routine internal review.” On Tuesday, the company referred to the January statement.

While OAN doesn’t have the influence wielded by the much larger Fox News, the top-rated cable news network, the fees from its deals with Verizon and AT&T provided a substantial stream of income, about $36 million a year by some estimates. And once it is gone from millions of television sets, OAN will be in a weaker bargaining position with advertisers — fewer potential viewers most likely mean fewer companies willing to pay as much to promote their products on the network.

All this comes at a particularly bad time for OAN, which is based in San Diego. The company and the Herring family that backs it face defamation lawsuits over the network’s claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald J. Trump.

That coverage featured wild stories about supposed plots to steal votes from Mr. Trump. The voting technology companies Smartmatic and Dominion are suing OAN over false claims that their machines enabled Mr. Trump’s enemies to switch votes cast for him to President Biden. One employee of Dominion, Eric Coomer, is also suing the network. Mr. Coomer received death threats after OAN named him in a report as an alleged collaborator of antifa, the far-left movement.

Two election workers from Georgia sued OAN for reporting that they were part of an illegal plot to add fraudulent votes to President Biden’s totals in the state, which he narrowly won. OAN settled that case in April.

The cases are among a series of defamation suits against conservative media outlets and Trump allies that are pending before judges across the country. Dominion and Smartmatic are also suing Newsmax, one of OAN’s competitors, and Fox News.

For OAN, the litigation has so far not gone well, as judges have rejected its attempts to have the cases dismissed. In one ruling, a judge concluded that OAN had acted “maliciously and consciously” in perpetuating falsehoods about Dominion, and that its chief White House correspondent, Chanel Rion, had failed to exercise even the most minimal journalistic scrutiny.

In her report, Ms. Rion cited a conservative podcaster and activist, Joe Oltmann, who claimed to have eavesdropped on an antifa conference call before the election. She reported that “antifa-drenched engineers are hell bent on deleting half of America’s voice” and referred to Mr. Coomer.

Last year, Charles Herring, the president of OAN’s owner, Herring Networks, defended the coverage in remarks to The New York Times, saying that the network has a review process with multiple checks in place to ensure news coverage is up to company standards.

“Based on our investigations, voter irregularities clearly took place in the November 2020 election,” he said. “The real question is to what extent.”

Started in 2013 by Mr. Herring’s father, Robert Herring, a tech entrepreneur, OAN was for years a little-watched, right-wing cable network running stories about a Republican effort to impeach President Barack Obama and about American Muslims joining the Islamic State.

The conservative takeover of Washington in 2017 gave it new life. That year, DirecTV struck a deal to carry the channel and substantially expanded its potential viewership. Mr. Trump gushed about its flattering coverage of him, lavishing on it the kind of praise he typically reserved for Fox News, calling OAN “a great network.”

OAN became not only a reliable purveyor of fawning coverage of Mr. Trump but also a dogged pursuer of his political opponents. Its willingness to bend the truth and give voice to conspiracy theories on a variety of topics — vaccines, Covid-19, the identities of the rioters at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 — went further than any of its competitors in the pro-Trump media sphere.

Mr. Trump rewarded the network’s loyalty. In the summer of 2020, dissatisfied with what he considered insufficiently positive coverage from Fox News, he urged his followers to instead watch OAN and Newsmax, deeming them “much better!” He did so again after the election, when OAN’s correspondents were more willing than many Fox journalists to continue lending credibility to allegations of voter fraud.

More so than some of its competitors, for months OAN clung to the notion that the election remained unresolved. At times, the network acted as if Mr. Biden were not the president. The channel did not broadcast live coverage of his inauguration. In a report in late March 2021, one of its correspondents claimed, “There’s still serious doubts about who’s actually president.”

Now OAN is trying to shore up its viewership. In recent days, an advertisement on its website offered new subscribers free access to its OAN Live service through Oct. 31.

Its anchors have cast their network’s dispute with Verizon as another attempt by a corporate media establishment to silence conservative voices.

One anchor, Dan Ball, recently implored viewers to call Verizon and demand that it continue service of OAN. “Call that number. You want to tell them, ‘Keep OAN. Keep OAN,’” he said. “Verizon is the next one trying to censor One America News.”

Network redundancy manufacturing why it matters - Ericsson

In the late 1960s, the breakthrough of modern computing – embodied by the programmable logic controller (PLC) – changed the face of American society by bringing new levels of automation to everything from home appliances to traffic systems. It also sparked an inflection point in the golden era of manufacturing, producing new reprogrammable ways of working and scaling production across major manufacturing sectors.

Today, manufacturing is experiencing another inflection point. This time, the technology that’s changing everything is high-performance 5G systems which itself can enable a powerful interplay of disruptive, enabling technologies such as distributed cloud and edge computing, massive IoT, AI and automation, among others.

How 5G is reinventing manufacturing

Based on 3GPP standards, 5G is built to a much higher standard than any other connectivity model deployed within the manufacturing value chain. As you read this, manufacturing blueprints are already being overhauled and re-engineered based on a powerful foundation of in-built five-nines security, latency as low as one millisecond, unmatched positioning technologies and significantly higher throughput capable of supporting ever-demanding manufacturing applications such as collaborative robots, digital twins, and even holographic remote interaction. This is just the beginning of a long exploratory journey of new technology adoption across industries where cellular-based 3GPP innovation will remain at the technology forefront.

The potential for impact is transformative, and the technologies provide a clear pathway to realizing new ways of working and significant efficiency gains, both of which will be critical in enabling opportunities for manufacturing enterprises to meet sustainability and emissions-reduction ambitions.

The deployment of 5G across the manufacturing value chain, including warehousing and the supply chain beyond the shop floor, will go a long way in addressing long-standing operational challenges including growing demands from customers for faster delivery and more customized products, both of which cannot be met by today’s legacy set ups. According to VoxEU, the total labor productivity growth has consistently stuttered below one percent across both the US and Europe since 2005. The revival and reinvention of manufacturing will be key to changing that trend.

 

What is redundancy in networking and why is it important in manufacturing?

When a network fails it often causes expensive downtime while the issue is resolved. This downtime can be avoided by installing redundant networks. Redundant networks have more than one path for data to travel. If one link in the network is broken, the data can still reach its destination through another path while the broken link is fixed.

When put in those terms, this may sound straightforward. However, designing a redundant network can be a very complex process. Each network design requires a different – even unique – network topology which can be defined by a whole variety of factors such as legacy systems, deployment scenarios, risk tolerance, application demands and many others. With the evolution to smart manufacturing, where every stage of the process must be connected and digitally accessible at all times, the value of network redundancy becomes acute.

5G systems have been designed to meet even the most challenging network robustness requirements from the very beginning, and what’s more remove the troubleshooting complexities associated with fairly common switching failures in traditional proprietary on-premises IT networks.

As this Ericsson Technology Review article describes, a local standalone 5G private network, deployed typically in a manufacturing plant, uses most of the same robustness features and functionalities that are used in a wide-area network deployment. In addition, it also makes it possible to implement a redundancy solution in which every (industrial) device is equipped with two user equipments that are connected either to a single robust network or to two parallel sets of local network partitions without any common failure points. And, with that, complexities are reduced significantly.

Benefits of network redundancy

Put simply, more redundancy and better distributed site management equals more reliability. And with a network design that ensures a device can automatically take over where another fails greatly reduces the probability that a failure will take the network down and grind factory operations to a halt.

Here are the key benefits of ensuring network redundancy in manufacturing operations:

  • Uptime and business continuity: A redundant design ensures the network is always up and always on. This is especially important for manufacturers that operate in highly competitive industries where downtime minutes can have a drastic effect on margins.
  • Security: Cybersecurity relies on redundancy for maximum effectiveness. Redundant networks enable manufacturing enterprises to have state-of-the art security measures in place and the backing of successful compliance audits. Redundant networks are a key predictor in how well a company will recover from a cyberattack. If there are more layers to failover to, the impact can be significantly limited.
  • Latency: Having multiple paths to access the same locations means applications running on the network will be less likely to struggle with slow speeds from high traffic volumes.
  • Resiliency: Redundant networks provide a foundation to scale factory operations by mitigating the risk of bottlenecks and site crashes associated with any rise in traffic.

Network redundancy design: What to consider

There are several methods for creating a redundant network, and they all require careful network planning and deployment. Some methods are standard across all manufacturers of networking components, and some methods are proprietary to specific vendors. Each method has both advantages and disadvantages, depending on the perspective. For example, some methods are less reliable but easier to set up. And some methods have virtually zero switchover time but require extra wiring and expensive components that support the protocol. Of all network redundancy designs, the most reliable ones involve the simplest configuration on the fewest number of devices.

When planning network redundancy, it’s important to shift the focus from node level to network level yet still think about all of the ways a network can fail. As part of this approach, it’s important to have a solid understanding of the needs of the most demanding applications on the network.

With those considerations in mind, there are several key questions which enterprise leaders will need to explore before deciding on a network redundancy design. These include:

  • What type of operations do you run? What kind of applications do you intend to run on the network? Which environments do you operate in? And, from that perspective, which radio frequency bands are in operation?
  • What is the risk tolerance of your operations, and how critical is production uptime? For example, is it necessary to have five-nine provision of uptime? How much impact does downtime have on your business?
  • How often do you performance maintenance? And what is your tolerance for downtime in such cases?
  • What provisions do you need to have in place for power redundancy? For example, just how severe would a power shortage impact your operations and business? Do you need generator back-ups, or battery backups? And would those options be feasible?

So which redundancy model will reign supreme across all smart manufacturing plants in the coming years?
