S&P 500 to Add Palo Alto Networks, Drop DISH Network Effective June 19 - MarketWatch

Palo Alto Networks will join the S&P 500 replacing DISH Network effective June 19, S&P Dow Jones Indices said Friday.

As part of the change, DISH will replace Cutera in the S&P SmallCap 600.

In other index changes, the S&P MidCap 400 will add Berry Global Group, BWX Technologies, Crown Holdings, Doximity, Dropbox, Graphic Packaging Holding, Ovintiv, Planet Fitness, Wesco Intl. and ZoomInfo Technologies.

They will replace Dana, John Wiley & Sons, SunPower, Ingevity, Fulton Financial, Douglas Emmett, Victoria's Secret, Macerich, SiTime and Navient. Those companies will move to the S&P SmallCap 600 from the S&P MidCap 400. They will replace PetMed Express, Comtech Telecommunications, Eagle Pharmaceuticals, Children's Place, Rayonier Advanced Materials, LivePerson, Gannett, DMC Global, Genesco and Zumiez.

Joining the S&P SmallCap 600 will be Artisan Partners Asset Management, California Resources, CarGurus, Moelis & Co., Phillips Edison, Schrodinger and UFP Technologies. They will be replacing LendingTree, Tredegar, Inogen, Douglas Elliman, FARO Technologies, Cara Therapeutics and Big Lots.

Companies moving to the S&P MidCap 400 are more representative of the mid-cap market space, and companies moving to the S&P SmallCap 600 are more representative of the small-cap market space, according to S&P.

"Companies being removed from the S&P SmallCap 600 are no longer representative of the small-cap market space," S&P said.

TV networks battle for Republican debates - Axios

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ rage against CNN and MSNBC — along with former President Trump’s polling lead and distrust of Fox News — has created a deadlock over who will host the rest of the 2024 GOP presidential debates, and uncertainty over whether they'll happen at all.

Why it matters: Debates can make or break a presidential candidacy. And who hosts those debates can have a significant impact on which contenders chose to participate, and how they perform.

• Trump's campaign believes his opponents need the primary debates more than he does because they're behind him in polls. And Trump — feeling slighted by Fox News' coverage of DeSantis, has indicated that he's wary of the network hosting debates, two sources told Axios.
• DeSantis, running second in GOP polling, has been pushing back against the Republican National Committee sanctioning a debate with CNN or NBC News, which are both salivating over the chance to host a 2024 primary debate, sources told Axios.

Driving the news: The debate negotiations — between the networks, campaigns and the RNC — follow CNN’s hotly debated decision to host a primetime town hall event with Trump last month. The town hall drew 3.3 million viewers, and was CNN's second most-viewed single-candidate town hall since 2016.

• CNN boss Chris Licht has told the RNC that CNN would air the debate not just on its linear feed, but also potentially on the linear networks of other Warner Bros. Discovery channels, two sources told Axios. By including those channels, Licht has argued, CNN could reach more conservatives than Fox, as well as independent voters.
• CNN’s pitch also includes distribution across its digital channels, and possibly streaming.
• Licht also has offered to partner with a conservative-leaning outlet on the debates. That partnership, two sources told Axios, could include giving a journalist from the partner outlet a co-moderator spot.

NBC News' pitch is being led in part by NBC News Group Chairman Cesar Conde and Carrie Budoff Brown, NBC News' senior vice president for politics. "NBC Nightly News" anchor Lester Holt would moderate the debate, alongside a colleague from sister networks CNBC and Telemundo.

• Holt, sources say, helped lobby the RNC for the bid, appeared at the RNC in February and began the presentation with an NBC sizzle reel.
• A source in the room said NBC News pitched distribution across NBC News, MSNBC, Telemundo, CNBC, its streaming service NBC News Now and its digital channels.
• NBC News and Holt were pushing the RNC to consider its bid at the same time longtime MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell acknowledged using "imprecise" language in a question to Vice President Harris that implied DeSantis didn’t want slavery taught in schools. DeSantis said he would boycott NBC News and MSNBC in response.

Fox News has zeroed in on Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum as possible moderators for a debate.

• Trump has not committed to participating in the first RNC debate, to be hosted by Fox News in August.
• Still, he is not shying away from engaging with Fox entirely. He appeared at a presidential town hall with Sean Hannity on Thursday.

The big picture: The RNC also is eager to ensure the debates are as widely viewed as possible. It’s mindful of the production value that networks could bring to the debates.

• The RNC reached out early to several conservative outlets. Newsmax and Rumble pitched but others passed because of cost concerns.
• But DeSantis in particular has been wary of places like CNN and NBC even as he has said he is eager for the debates. While not naming the networks, DeSantis told Glenn Beck last week that “corporate media…shouldn’t be involved in our process because they’re hostile to us as Republicans.”

• Asked if DeSantis would commit to showing up to the first debate in August with Fox News, a DeSantis spokesperson declined to comment.

Zoom out: The broadcast networks also submitted bids to the RNC, sources told Axios.

• ABC News has expressed interest in the New Hampshire primary debate, which it co-hosts every year with its New Hampshire affiliate WMUR, in addition to a possible fall debate.
• CBS News has indicated it would prefer to host a debate in 2024, when there presumably will be fewer candidates to wrangle on a stage.
• PBS submitted a bid to the RNC to host a debate, Nick Massella, a spokesperson for PBS NewsHour, confirmed to Axios.

The big picture: As television viewing becomes more splintered, political committees are eager to explore new types of partnerships that can maximize viewership.

• Nearly every network has partnered with tech firms to co-host debates during the past decade. Often, they also will partner with local outlets, digital news companies, radio networks or national newspapers to co-moderate debates.
• Facebook, a source told Axios, did not pitch. Nor did Twitter, according to people familiar with the matter. Rumble, a conservative rival to YouTube, is partnering with Fox News on the first debate.
• Politico, which has co-hosted debates in the past, did not participate in the pitching process this year, nor did Axios, sources told Axios.
• A Politico spokesperson told Axios, “POLITICO has robust coverage plans for the debates, is exploring opportunities for ancillary events around them, and is actively engaged in planning for an ambitious and substantial footprint at the conventions in Milwaukee and Chicago.” An Axios spokesperson didn't comment.
• The Washington Post submitted a bid, a spokesperson confirmed.

Dish Network Stock Surges, Partially Reversing Deep Selloff - The Wall Street Journal

Dish Network was the S&P 500's top performer shortly Friday morning, after a report of Amazon's possible entry into the telecom business sent stocks spinning.

The news had the stock on pace for its largest percentage increase in about two years, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

That's a welcome change for shareholders. Dish is down 49% this year, even including today's gain. That's the second worst performer in the index so far in 2023. The stock reached a 24-year low earlier this year.

Ex-CNN pundit rips network for interview on Toobin masturbation scandal: 'Sexual harassment in and of itself' - Fox News

Ex-CNN commentator Mary Katharine Ham called out her former network Thursday for having anchor Alisyn Camerota interview Jeffrey Toobin about his masturbation scandal, saying it was an example of "sexual harassment." 

During her guest appearance on the "Ruthless" podcast, Ham discussed the Toobin scandal, which involved the former CNN legal analyst getting caught masturbating during a New Yorker Zoom call back in 2020. He was fired by The New Yorker but, although he was initially removed from air after the incident, Toobin eventually returned to CNN eight months later in 2021.

The decision for Toobin to return to the network caused intense online backlash and Ham took issue with Toobin’s follow-up interview with Camerota, where he was allowed to defend his actions.

Camerota had the awkward role of describing what happened and asking questions about it for Toobin's return interview.

"Honestly, I would argue that just suggesting that that interview should happen is sexual harassment in and of itself," Ham said. "What are we doing?"

In the interview with Camerota, Toobin expressed regret for the incident but also gratitude for CNN keeping him onboard, unlike The New Yorker.

"Because I'm a flawed human being who makes mistakes, and you know, there is no defense for my conduct," he said. "The only issue is what should be the consequences, and the 'New Yorker' made one decision about the consequences. CNN made a different decision, fortunately, for which I'm very grateful, but I am not going to come up here and, you know, split hairs and try to come up with justifications or explanations. It was wrong. It was stupid. And I'm trying to be a better person."

Ham joked on the podcast, "I just wanted a similar exit interview."

In an October 2022 Substack post, Ham revealed that she had been "quiet suspended" from the network in January 2022 after commenting on the Toobin scandal in a Twitter back and forth with CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski over her comments on coverage of the Congressional baseball shooting.

"Got jack to say about Cuomo and Toobin, but gotta fact-check me when he’s got nothing," Ham tweeted about Kaczynski, followed by, "One jacked off in front of female colleagues and one violated every conflict of interest rule in journalism, lied about it, and got fired, but I’m the issue bc I think the Congressional baseball shooting was covered too lightly and taxes are too high. Sure, dude."

CNN’S PRIMETIME LINEUP QUICKLY PIVOTS FROM DISMISSING DURHAM REPORT TO IGNORING IT 

According to her Substack post, Ham was only told after being off the air for seven months that she had been suspended. She learned her suspension came about because "when it got to the comments about Jeffrey Toobin…everyone wanted a bit of a breather" and she hadn't been immediately notified because there were concerns that she would be a "loose cannon" since she had recently had a baby.

Ham brought up the suspension on the podcast.

"I commented on it at one point and my old boss, Jeff Zucker, didn't like that at all," she said.

She also joked about the contrast in her treatment compared to Toobin, who left the network in August 2022.

"'You know who we should punish? She tweeted about Jeffrey Toobin and the inadvisability of whacking it off at work. Why don’t we put her on the bench?'" Ham imagined CNN executives saying.

BRUSSELS, June 1 (Reuters) - The Dutch government has stepped up its criticism of a push by EU telecoms operators to get Big Tech to help pay for the rollout of 5G and broadband, saying claims that unchecked data growth has pushed up network costs are not backed by facts.

Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach such as a network fee levied on video streaming companies, it would be better to have a toolbox with different instruments targeting specific issues in different EU countries, it said.

The comments were set out in a position paper shared with the European Commission and EU countries ahead of a meeting of EU telecoms ministers in Luxembourg on Friday.

"In reality, contrary to all these persistent claims, the strong growth of Internet data in the past did not confront large telecom operators with higher network costs," the paper seen by Reuters said.

"This is because network equipment becomes ever more powerful at the same price. By omitting this crucial insight, a problem is suggested that does not exist."

The issue pits Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE), Orange (ORAN.PA), Telefonica (TEF.MC) and Telecom Italia against Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google, Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Meta Platforms Inc (META.O), Netflix Inc (NFLX.O), Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O).

"In reality the total network costs have remained constant despite the consistently high growth over the last decades, whilst the profit margins of European telecom operators have improved significantly over the last decade," the paper said.

"Protecting large telecom operators should not be a goal in itself, as the interests of European consumers and businesses should be leading," the Dutch said, citing the 188 billion euros in the combined revenue of large EU telecoms providers in 2021 versus Netflix's 9 billion euros in annual revenue.

They said direct payments are unjustified as end-users already pay for their access line including network traffic costs while such intervention would affect the functioning of the internet.

The Dutch also slammed calls to antitrust regulators to loosen merger rules to allow the creation of very large pan-European telecommunications champions.

"The synergies for such cross-border mergers to telecom operators are generally considered relatively limited, whilst there don’t seem to be convincing benefits to wider society."
