Space Command to expand network of allies that help monitor orbital traffic - SpaceNews

SpaceX is expected to join Space Command's 'commercial integration cell' in the near future.

WASHINGTON — To get intelligence about what is happening in orbit, U.S. Space Command works with a close-knit group of allies and private companies. 

The command is now looking to expand its network of data-sharing partners as activities in space grow and the Pentagon worries about Chinese weapons targeting U.S. satellites. 

“How do we create the space picture? How do we know who’s in the domain and operating there?” asked Maj. Gen. DeAnna Burt, who commands the multinational space operations arm of U.S. Space Command.

Burt runs the Combined Force Space Component Command, which oversees the Combined Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. At the CSpOC, crews from the United States and allied countries monitor space.

In an interview with SpaceNews, Burt said one of the challenges for Space Command is to able to capture a complete view of what is going on in space, which has become a complex enterprise of civilian government, military and private sector activities.

The military has precise intelligence for the air, land and sea domains. “We have to create the same picture for space,” Burt said.

Space Command has signed agreements with 25 nations that share space situational data. That data is used to identify the location of satellites and space junk so collisions can be prevented. A handful of countries have operators deployed at Vandenberg. Representatives from Canada and Australia work full-time at the CSpOC. A Space Command “multinational space collaboration cell” includes France, Germany and the United Kingdom. 

Burt said more nations will be added to the coalition but could not confirm which ones. 

Gen. John Raymond, former commander of U.S. Space Command, told lawmakers on Capitol Hill a year ago that there were plans underway to add Japan, Italy and South Korea to the multinational space collaboration cell.

SpaceX to join CSpOC commercial cell

Space Command also gets intelligence from a group of commercial satellite operators known as the “commercial integration cell.”

The CIC started as a pilot program in 2015 when space surveillance was handled by U.S. Strategic Command. The idea was to bring in more data from satellite operators to improve the military’s space situational awareness.  

Today the CIC includes Intelsat, SES Government Solutions, Inmarsat, Eutelsat, Maxar, Viasat, XTAR, Iridium Communications and Hughes Network Systems.

Burt said SpaceX is expected to join the CIC in the near future. “There are talks under way,” she said. SpaceX is a launch services provider and now the operator of the world’s largest satellite constellation.  

“It’s important for the CSpOC to have connections and dialogue with industry,” said Burt.

Technology to help collaboration

Burt said a top priority for the Combined Force Space Component Command is to have better collaboration tools that allow information to be shared across military and civilian networks. 

“The space enterprise is a whole of government,” she said. “We need command-and-control capabilities to make sure that across the board we’re able to support both our commercial civil and coalition partners.”

Current space tracking software applications are not compatible, for example, between systems with different classification levels. Burt said that having tools “that allow us to best interact with our partners at every classification level is critical.”

The Space Force’s procurement organization, the Space and Missile Systems Center, stood up a software factory in Los Angeles to develop cloud-based apps to track space objects and share data with allies. The program was named Kobayashi Maru, a training exercise in Star Trek’s Starfleet Academy, 

“We need different types of software to connect different types of data to get the command-level decision making that we need,” Burt said. The apps the Space Force is developing have been “an evolutionary process.”

Space Command has already been able to share some of the apps with partners who now use them in their own space operations centers, said Burt. 

Space operations are constantly changing, Burt said. “We must frequently evaluate and improve our processes and technology to monitor and react effectively in the space environment, with our ultimate goal being to ensure the safe and responsible use of space.”

Over the coming years Space Command is expected to hand over spaceflight safety traffic management responsibilities to the Department of Commerce. Space Command will then just focus on the national security aspects of space domain awareness such as monitoring potential adversaries’ activities in space. 

Burt said the command is working to “enable the Department of Commerce, as we continue to improve these capabilities.”

Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands is renowned for conducting research in innate immunity, non-specific vaccines, targeting leukocytes, and metabolic differentiation, especially against coronaviruses. 

"I am looking forward to increasing my collaborations with the GVN," said Dr. Mihai Netea, a GVN Task Force member who will direct the new Center, and who also heads the division of Experimental Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands. "I am pleased that our research in understanding the factors influencing variability of human immune responses, the biology of sepsis and immunoparalysis in bacterial and fungal infections, and the study of the memory traits of innate immunity is already helping to shape GVN's thought-leadership on utilizing innate immunity to mitigate our current pandemic and future ones."  

The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in the USA leads major genomic studies of Lassa virus, Ebola virus, and Zika virus and have carried out extensive work in virology and microbial diagnostics, including contributions to the development of innovative technologies.

UWI St. Augustine joins the GVN as an Affiliate through GVN's Center of Excellence in HIV and HCV Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory, at the University at Buffalo, SUNY, USA.

Out-of-this-world facility equipping youth with valuable STEM skills - KBJR 6

DULUTH, MN -- STARBASE is an organization with a mission.

They equip students with educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Monday marked their first day of in-person operation since the pandemic and after a massive expansion.

STARBASE Director Charity Johnson said the new facility is inspiring the next generation of leaders in the STEM field.

"They're really acting like scientists and engineers but at a 5th-grade level," Johnson said.

Based at the 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth, students are immersed in hands-on learning.

"It's important for kids to learn about STEM because it's all around them," Johnson said. "It's in their everyday life. It's in their work life. We want to open their eyes to that and what their possibilities are."

The Duluth campus first opened in 2017, and it quickly reached capacity.

With the new facility, STARBASE will be able to host 2,300 students every year, which is double the number they could previously take.

Johnson said the larger capacity will allow them to reach more people all across Northern Minnesota.

"What we often see are kids who think that maybe they're not good at math or not good at science," she said. "We bring them up here and they just flourish because they're in such a different environment and they see learning in such a different way than maybe they normally do in their traditional classroom."

During the one-week program, students learn about careers in STEM and methods of problem-solving.

STARBASE Instructor Makaila Miller said she enjoys seeing the 5th graders overcome challenges.

"A lot of the things we do are challenging for them, especially when they're working in teams, and so it's fun to see them stick with it and get really excited about accomplishing something."

While STEM skills do not come easy to many, STARBASE is equipping students with tools for life.

"Failure is not a bad thing," Johnson said. "You learn more from those failures than you do from your successes, and it's something we celebrate here."

STARBASE is funded through the Department of Defense, state funds, and private donors.

Schools that want to send their students to STARBASE can now get on the waitlist for the next school year.

Pitt Joins Wellcome Leap's Global Network to Accelerate Breakthroughs in Human Health - UPJ Athletics

A person in gold earrings and a yellow top looks through an eyepieceThe University of Pittsburgh has joined a multi-year partnership with the U.S. based nonprofit Wellcome Leap as a founding university member to help solve the world’s most serious health challenges involving cancer and infectious diseases at record speed.

In signing a master research agreement, Pitt joins 21 other leading academic and research institutions worldwide in the Leap Health Breakthrough Network. The University’s goals include breakthrough scientific and technological solutions in human physiology and bioengineering within a decade. 

“The University of Pittsburgh is proud to play our part in this extraordinary opportunity,” said Pitt Chancellor Patrick Gallagher. “With our deep bench of health sciences innovators and bioengineering pioneers, Pitt can and will help fuel this ambitious global push to realize breakthroughs for society’s gain.”

The network’s mission is to spark a “Health Age” through three dimensions: accelerating the fundamental understanding of health and disease; changing time, money and risk in development of diagnostics, treatments and preventions; and shifting speed, scale and equity in delivery globally.

“Through this partnership, Pitt will be at the cutting-edge intersection of medicine and engineering,” said Rob A. Rutenbar, Pitt senior vice chancellor for research. “Our renowned bioengineering and health sciences programs have long worked together to achieve research innovations. In becoming one of the select group of universities that are part of the Wellcome Leap initiative, we will be able to even further advance our innovative capacity.”

The master agreement is modeled on the mission of scientific transformation at the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where Wellcome Leap CEO Regina E. Dugan and COO Ken Gabriel have served in top leadership roles.

“Science and engineering should move at the pace of breakthroughs, not the pace of contracting,” said Dugan. “Wellcome Leap has removed traditional obstacles to build a network that can mobilize and synchronize to solve problems in human health faster than has ever been possible.”

One of Wellcome Leap’s first funding efforts is its $50 million Program in Human Organs, Physiology and Engineering (HOPE), with an aim to leverage the power of bioengineering to advance stem cells, organoids and whole organ systems, and connections to answer the “what ifs” of health care. Pitt researchers have already provided abstracts for consideration.

Alishba Imran, a 16-year-old, built a prosthetic hand that uses artificial intelligence to perform human-like tasks. Through her model and use of 3D printing, the entire hand cost $50, compared to market rates of over $1,000. 

Adeola Ojuade is a 16-year-old programmer. She created a Haptic Guide to aid blind and visually impaired people — she used an ultrasonic sensor that recognizes the distance of an object and created a haptic device that vibrates according to that recognized distance. She even presented her haptic guide at the MLK Tech Summit at Zappos! 

Okezue Bell is a 14-year-old podcast host and app designer. He developed two novel systems: Respiray/Dignosys, which can detect respiratory diseases through x-ray image detection, and Dignosys V2, an app which he manages with a full team to determine cardiovascular disease based on patient data and offer decentralized doctor-patient communication.

All three were inspired and supported in their contributions by The Knowledge Society (TKS), a five-year-old Canadian youth accelerator for learners 11-17. The afterschool program that seeks to “help kids shape the future” was operating pre-pandemic in seven cities across North America. TKS is now available for students all over the world to apply to its virtual, global program and scholarships are available. 

The difference-making engine was created by brothers Nadeem and Navid Nathoo, sons of Ugandan and Tanzanian immigrants. The wicked smart, driven duo started in finance, backed into fintech, then cloud tech. After selling their company to Box, they decided to create the future of education.

With a focus on unlocking human potential, Navid Nathoo said, “What’s most important is to learn how to figure things out [...] that takes grit and resilience.” 

Through self-directed learning and impact projects, participants build stronger mindsets, develop real-world skills, learn coding, and expand their social capital. TKS’ teachers hail from leading companies in every sector. 

The TKS team works with big companies to see what problems they are facing. This creates a bank of problems students can choose to work on. “[TKS] is as much about problem finding as it is about problem-solving,” says Navid. 

Of the current 800 participants, three quarters identify as visible minorities and almost half identify as female. 

Christine Jean-Julien is a 16-year-old podcast host and neuroscience student. With other students at TKS, she recently developed the Protector System to monitor the location of trees being logged using a series of CNNs and overlaying images to determine any change in tree population over specified regions with the goal of tracking illegal logging and ending deforestation.

TKS students have gone on to work for Microsoft at age 17, speak at WebSummit for 30,000 people, start their own VC-backed startup and work on fighting COVID-19

Navid and Nadeem realize the benefit of making TKS a community of passionate innovators. They believe in the adage “your network is your net worth,” and hope to spread and help to create social capital for young people all over the world. 

While not trained as educators, Nadeem and Navid Nathoo have created a vivid picture of next-generation learning, one that combines personalized learning sprints with impact projects. It’s a glimpse of what high school and college of the future should be.
