Five games played in a span of two days this weekend will see games from three FBS conferences on CBS Sports Network as we crawl deeper into the 2021 college football season. We're to the point where teams are clawing for bowl eligibility and position in their conference standings. The action started Friday night with an in-state battle, as Nevada defeated UNLV 51-20. Then, on Saturday, the network will show a four-game marathon of action spanning the whole day.

First up will be a MAC showdown between Bowling Green and Buffalo as the Bulls look to build off of a beatdown of Akron last weekend. Then, in the afternoon, Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion square off in a game between Conference USA foes in need of victories. The evening window brings a game between Boise State and Colorado State as the Rams seek their first-ever victory against the Broncos.

Finally, the late-night game provides what should be a thrilling showdown between two of the Mountain West's top teams as No. 21 San Diego State hosts Fresno State. It will be a test of the Bulldogs' prolific offense against the vaunted Aztecs' defense.

The Bulldogs have been on the losing end of three single-digit defeats against quality foes Mississippi State, SMU and NC State, however. With former West Virginia and Oklahoma quarterback Austin Kendall slinging the football, Louisiana Tech is better than its record indicates.

Boise State at Colorado State

Philadelphia to equip police patrols with Tasers year after Walter Wallace's death - Axios

One year after the fatal Philadelphia police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr., the city moved to equip and train all patrol officers with Tasers.

Of note: The effort will cost $14 million, but the funds were already approved in the city budget earlier this year.

• "It is our belief, and the sincere hope of the Wallace family that these measures will save lives," Shaka Johnson and Kevin O'Brien, attorneys for the Wallace family, said in a statement to Axios.

Flashback: On Oct. 26, 2020, Wallace was in a mental health crisis when his sister called 911 asking for a medic. Instead, police officers arrived at his home.

• Wallace, holding a knife, walked toward the officers, while his mother tried to deescalate the situation.
• Officers Sean Matarazzo and Thomas Munz opened fire less than a minute later, killing the 27-year-old in a shooting captured on video by a bystander and police body cameras.

The big picture: The incident sparked days of protests against police brutality. And soon after, the Wallace family blamed the officers' lack of nonlethal options as a contributing factor to his death, among other systemic issues.

• The police department pledged for mental health reforms, but the process has been slow.

Between the lines: People with mental health issues are 16 times more likely to be killed by law enforcement, according to the Treatment Advocacy Center's 2015 study.

What they're saying: Activists told Axios they hadn't seen meaningful change in the aftermath of Wallace's death.

• "So many people came out in support for days and weeks, and that remains a lesson of collective struggle and how important it is to stand up," Krystal Strong, a University of Pennsylvania professor and Black Lives Matter Philadelphia organizer, told Axios.
• But Strong said she doesn't believe there's been "any real meaningful changes that will prevent another murder of someone like Walter Wallace, Jr."

YahNé Ndgo, an activist who has helped organize protests with the Wallace family, wasn't impressed with the latest reform, which the U.S. Department of Justice recommended back in 2015.

• "This isn't a solution. This is smoke and mirrors," she said of the Tasers, calling the effort "just a raise for police."

For the record: Ndgo considers Wallace's death avoidable.

• "An unexpected tragedy is one thing … but an unexpected violent tragedy at the hands of the system that he turned to and was forced to depend on for care and protection is another thing altogether," Ndgo said.
• The solution, according to both Ndgo and Strong, is more community-driven organizations that prioritize deescalation.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement to Axios that Wallace's killing, "along with last year's protests, underscored the urgency of many important reforms, such as mental health training and crisis response resources."

• The Philadelphia Police Department didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Of note: The city launched a pilot program earlier this year establishing four co-responder teams, which serve as first responders for individuals in crisis. They're made up of crisis-trained officers and mental health professionals.

What's next: A vigil for Wallace will be held Wednesday at 5pm at 6511 Lincoln Drive, Philadelphia.

WASHINGTON, Oct 29 (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has raised significant concerns about a plan to use spectrum for 5G wireless networks on aviation safety and is planning to issue a formal warning about the issue, according to sources and a letter seen by Reuters.

The aviation industry has voiced alarm about the plan to use C-Band spectrum for more than a year. Network carriers are expected to begin using the spectrum starting Dec. 5 starting in 46 markets.

FAA Deputy Administrator Bradley Mims in a previously unreported Oct. 6 letter said the agency shares "the deep concern about the potential impact to aviation safety resulting from interference to radar altimeter performance from 5G network operations in the C band."

An FAA spokeswoman said Friday it "continues to engage with other agencies so that aviation and the newest generation of 5G cellular technology can safely coexist."

The Federal Communications Commission said Friday it remains committed to ensuring air safety as the agency’s successful track record demonstrates, while moving forward with the deployment of new technologies that support American business and consumer needs."

The FAA held a lengthy Oct. 14 meeting with the aviation industry on the issue. FAA and FCC officials have held numerous discussions about the issue, the sources said.

The FAA is planning to soon issue a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin and an airworthiness directive about the issue, two officials told Reuters, confirming a Wall Street Journal report.

The aerospace and airline sector met with the FCC in August, warning without changes "major disruptions to use of the National Airspace System can be expected from the rollout of 5G" and added the FAA will be forced to "drastically reduce aviation operational capacity."

Wireless trade group CTIA said Friday 5G networks can safely use C-band spectrum "without causing harmful interference to aviation equipment," and cited numerous active 5G networks using this spectrum band in 40 countries... Any delay in activating this spectrum risks America’s competitiveness."

One longer-term solution is retrofitting some altimeters with "out-of-band filters," but it would likely take years and "many thousands of civil aircraft are likely to be impacted, the aviation industry said.
