Food Network will film at this Chandler restaurant. Here's how you could be part of it - AZCentral

A Chandler restaurant may get the help it needs when "Restaurant: Impossible" rolls into metro Phoenix.

The Food Network show features celebrity chef Robert Irvine and a team of helpers, who get $10,000 and two days to turn around the fate of a struggling restaurant. For each episode, Food Network recruits local volunteers to help with painting, plumbing, upholstering and electric.

On March 3-4, Food Network, Irvine and the team of volunteers will race against the clock to overhaul Ginger Monkey Tavern in downtown Chandler.

The show has visited Arizona at least twice before during an episode featuring an overhaul of Western-themed Copper Steer Steakhouse in Safford and a trip to Sapori D'Italia, an Italian restaurant in Fountain Hills.

What to know about 'Restaurant: Impossible'

"Restaurant: Impossible" has been granting restaurants flashy remodels and menu overhauls since 2011 and is now in its 16th season. Struggling restaurants volunteer or are nominated to be on the show, during which Irvine and his team have two days and $10,000 to help save them.

Extensive renovations, menu overhauls and deep dives into the owners' personal lives are par for the course.

Irvine began his career with Food Network on "Dinner: Impossible" in 2007. In 2008, however, Food Network pulled the chef from the show after The New York Times and other publications reported that much of Irvine's resume and his achievements were fabricated.

After fellow TV personality and chef Michael Symon took over the show for Season 5, Irvine returned to the network for Seasons 6 through 8, the end of the show. In 2011, he started filming the new spinoff show "Restaurant: Impossible."

What is Ginger Monkey Tavern?

In the upcoming episode, Irvine will visit the Ginger Monkey Tavern, a bar and restaurant that opened in downtown Chandler in 2016. The building, located on the southwest corner of Ocotillo Road and Arizona Avenue, was previously home to Whiskey Rose, a country bar and nightclub.

Owners Doug Collins and Jackson Armstrong opened the restaurant and bar together, although Collins is no longer involved.

The menu features pub fare, including burgers, multiple flavors of mac and cheese, nachos and loaded fries. Drinks include a mixture of local and domestic beers, margaritas and cocktails including wine spritzers served with a popsicle inside.

How you can get involved in the show

To transform a restaurant in two days requires some heavy lifting, and Food Network is looking to the Phoenix community for help.

Any certified or licensed painters, plumbers, electricians or upholsterers with experience in remodeling and decorating can volunteer. Construction dates are March 3 and 4 and crews will work through the night.

Volunteer shifts are:

  • Shift #1 – Tuesday, March 3, from 1-7 p.m.
  • Shift #2 – Tuesday, March 3, from 7 p.m. - 2 a.m.
  • Shift #3 - Wednesday, March 4, from 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Volunteers must be 18 or older.

To volunteer, email volunteer@restaurantimpossiblevolunteers.com by noon on Friday, Feb. 28. Include your preferred day or days to volunteer, full name, email address, cellphone number and skill set or related profession. Use the subject line "1704 AZ Volunteer."

For those who don't want to volunteer, Food Network also invites the community to the grand reopening of the restaurant.

On Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m., the new Ginger Monkey Tavern will be unveiled. Reservations are required, not all are guaranteed a table and no one under 8 years old is allowed. Guests will foot their own bills and will get a confirmation from Food Network if selected to attend the event.

To make a reservation for the grand opening, email volunteer@restaurantimpossiblevolunteers.com by noon on Friday, Feb. 28, with the subject line "1704 AZ RESERVATIONS." Include your full name, email address, cellphone number, party size and the names of everyone in your party.
