The first 24-hour news channel tailored specifically for the African American community kicked off today.
The Black News Channel (BNC) debuted Monday, the second week of Black History Month, and will offer original programming “created by people of color for people of color,” according to its website. The network reportedly premiered in 33 million households in New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta, according to NBC News.
The network, based in Tallahassee, Fla., was founded by J.C. Watts, a former Republican congressman from Oklahoma, and cable television veteran Bob Brillante.
BNC programming will feature all-black on-air talent and will pull from historically black colleges and universities for its on-air expertise. The network’s creators also stressed that the network will be nonpartisan.
“We’re not looking to be Republican or Democrat,” Watts told the Associated Press back in October. “MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, they may have African American faces on their news shows, but they are not necessarily covering the community from a cultural perspective.”
Watts said the network would cover issues he claims are neglected by the mainstream media, reporting on areas like health and wellness from a black perspective.
The network has reached viewers through Spectrum, Xfinity X1 and Dish, with plans to add Sling, Vizio Smart TVs, Xumo and Roku Channel.
A 2018 Nielsen report found MSNBC was the most popular prime-time cable channel with African Americans.
