Santa Barbara-based global humanitarian organization ShelterBox USA is used to preparing every day for the worst day ever. It brings a variety of emergency shelter and essential household items (including cooking sets, water purification, and solar lights) to communities devastated by disaster and conflict situations.

Like so many organizations, ShelterBox USA is working through the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and a number of its staff are working remotely and practicing, social distancing.

The organization wanted to do something to stay connected to its global base of staff and volunteers who are also dealing with the impact of COVID-19, and recently launched a Facebook Community called Cooking Through Corona, an online social network to unite people from around the world.

"I understand how the comfort of a hot meal together can cut through chaos in uncertain times and reconnect a family,” said ShelterBox USA president, Kerri Murray. “The families that ShelterBox serves around the world repeatedly tell us how a meal together helps restore some normalcy to their lives in times of uncertainty.

“I also love to cook and out of conversations with our ShelterBox staff we knew we could do even more to help put politics and panic aside, and we had an idea of creating an online community to connect and bring comfort to people around the world who are home-bound and working remote.

“Eating is that one activity, that connects us all. Out of that conversation was born, Cooking Through Corona.”

In just a few days, the social page has some 1,300 followers from around the world. Murray has been hosting Facebook live updates on the work of ShelterBox all while cooking a comforting meal, including Solitude Soup, which she made in an actual ShelterBox Cook Pot.

The Cooking Through Corona recipe and live video demonstrations include recipes for Solitude Soup, The Quaratini, Sequestered St. Patrick, Isolation Chili and Friends & Family Fried Rice (sent in from a fan in the Bay Area who is cooking for healthcare workers who need the comfort of a hot meal).

Guest celebrity chefs are also lining up, with Leslie Zemeckis (award-winning actress and documentarian) sharing her recipe for Contagion Cupcakes. Cooking Through Corona is looking for guest chefs and recipes. Message them directly on the Facebook page.

Visit CookingThroughCorona.com to join the Facebook page. To volunteer, fundraise, or make a donation, visit www.shelterboxusa.org or call 941-907-6036. ShelterBox USA is a four star-rated charity by Charity Navigator and has platinum status from GuideStar. ShelterBox was nominated for the 2018 and 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
