Lehigh Valley Health Network restarts elective surgeries at 3 locations - lehighvalleylive.com

Lehigh Valley Health Network has reopened three hospitals for elective surgeries, locations that have never seen a COVID-19 case and are separated from facilities treating the virus.

The move comes after the health network reopened 50 of its Lehigh Valley Physician Group practices to patients.

The COVID-19 caseload in LVHN’s hospitals has plateaued, and the rate of growth of new cases in the community is declining, Brian Nester, LVHN’s president and CEO, said in a news release.

“Now it’s time to reopen our services and get back to providing the services people need,” he said. “As we recover, it is imperative that we continue to provide COVID-safe care in every location where we see patients.”

The Non-COVID Care Facilities, which provide care only for conditions other than COVID-19, are standalone buildings that have been quarantined throughout the pandemic.

“We have kept these facilities free from COVID-19 and will do everything we can to make certain they stay that way,” Nester says.

The first three locations are:

  • Lehigh Valley Health Network–Tilghman, 4815 Tilghman St. in South Whitehall Township
  • Coordinated Health Allentown–1503 N. Cedar Crest Blvd. in South Whitehall Township
  • Coordinated Health Bethlehem–2310 Highland Ave. in Bethlehem Township, which will open May 11.

Lehigh Valley Health Network completed its purchase of Coordinated Health in December. The deal included all 22 Coordinated Health locations in the greater Lehigh Valley, northeastern Pennsylvania from Hazleton to Scranton, and in Warren County.

The health network previously said declines in office visits and elective surgeries led to furloughs of health network staff. While a total number was not released, it included more than 900 staffers with the Lehigh Valley Physician Group at nearly 150 practice locations.

LVHN says stringent safety protocols will be in place to ensure the facilities remain as free as possible from COVID-19. That includes:

  • A separate test center for health care providers and pre-op patients
  • Screening employees for COVID-19 infection every day and performing regular COVID-19 tests of front-line colleagues
  • Screen surgery and procedure patients for COVID-19 infection and, when warranted, test certain at-risk patients
  • Plan surgery times to stagger patient arrival and ensure social distancing
  • Strongly encourage using LVHN’s EASE app at LVHN–Tilghman so family members can stay informed about loved ones but not remain at facilities during procedures.
  • Virtual check-in and waiting room protocols, including pre-surgery assessments, registration and check-in
  • Frequent cleaning and disinfection protocols

LVHN will also designate “Non-COVID Care Zones” in all of its hospitals.
