LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – This year’s EQUIP training event is designed to help Kentucky Baptist churches navigate through a challenging season of ministry where the COVID-19 pandemic has been a roadblock.
The sessions will all be online beginning with a session Tuesday and continuing through the first week of September.
Last year’s EQUIP sessions were wildly popular with some record-breaking numbers attending. Those who participated said the training was valuable but they would like to have taken part in more of the sessions.
Problem solved. The online EQUIP training sessions, again led by leaders in specific areas, allows participants to take part in multiple sessions since none of them overlap.
Leaders in the areas of Abuse Prevention, Children’s Ministry, Conflict Resolution, Deacon Ministry, Discipleship, Evangelism, Finance, Revitalization, Security, Sunday School Teachers, Sunday School Directors, WMU, Women’s Ministry and Worship & Music are all invited to gather online to be better equipped during the pandemic.
“EQUIP is a great opportunity for those who serve in a wide variety of ways to learn new skills and be refreshed in old ones for fulfilling the work the Lord has given them to do,” said KBC Executive Director-Treasurer Todd Gray. “Those of us who serve Jesus by serving His local church must continually be equipped and refreshed for better, more effective, service.”
EQUIP training classes have been lauded in the past by Kentucky Baptist church leaders who participated. They go away with new tools sure to enhance their leadership experience. And the EQUIP online training has a little something for everyone.
Participants can choose one or two or even select all of the above. The opportunities are limitless.
“One of the things I have heard is a complaint from attendees that they wish they could attend more than a couple of sessions,” Gray said. “The format for EQUIP 2020 will allow for that reality.”
Gray complimented Steve Rice, the KBC team leader for Church Consulting and Revitalization, for putting together the blockbuster EQUIP sessions that are sure to benefit Kentucky Baptists.
“Steve Rice and his capable team plan EQUIP with the goal of delivering excellence for the end user – Kentucky Baptist men and women who desire to serve Jesus with the very best they have to offer,” he said.
The first session of the EQUIP series will start Aug. 18. Here’s a glance at the schedule.
Aug. 18
Children’s Ministry: Rachel Cobb has served as the Preschool and Children’s Ministry director at First Baptist in Richmond for 18 years. She has back-to-back sessions starting at 7 p.m. with Transformational Teaching for Children’s Ministry followed by Merging Ministry Post Pandemic at 8 p.m.
Conflict Resolution: Dwight Schettler serves as president of Ambassadors of Reconciliation and served four years as director of training and certification for Peacemaker Ministries. His session, Personal Peacemaking, goes from 7-9 p.m.
Aug. 20
Student Ministry: Matt Flanagan, the Children and Student Ministry Consultant for the KBC, has 29 years in leading student ministry. His sessions will be Teaching Deep to Distracted Teens at 7 p.m. and Rebuilding Ministry to Students at 8 p.m.
Worship & Music: Jason “Bubba” Stewart, the worship and music consultant for the KBC, leads this session that includes Resources for your Worship & Music Ministry at 7 p.m. and Creative Worship in Times of Pandemic at 8 p.m.
Aug. 24
Women’s Ministry: Valerie Vincent, who led a private practice in counseling for 20 years and formerly wrote for the Western Recorder Family Forum, leads this session of Healthy Ministry Boundaries at 7 p.m., and Heather McVey leads the second session, Steadfast in the Midst of COVID-19, at 8 p.m.
Sunday School Directors: PK Spratt, the interim discipleship pastor at Parkalnd Baptist Church in Louisville, leads sessions on Delivering Creative Training at 7 p.m. and A Simple Pipeline for Developing Leaders at 8 p.m.
Aug. 25
Sunday School teachers: Ken Braddy, the director of Sunday School for LifeWay Christian Resources, leads sessions on Ask Great Questions and Lead Great Discussions at 7 p.m. and Prepare to Reopen Your Class at 8 p.m.
Security: Ron Guiar, an expert in church safety and security with more than 30 years of experience in private security, law enforcement and church security, leads a session on Advancing Your Church Safety Plan through Ever-Changing Times at 7 p.m.
Aug. 27
Deacon Ministry: Larry Purcell, a regional consultant with the KBC, heads up this session on Deacon Ministry in Challenging Times at 7 p.m.
Revitalization: Andy McDonald, a regional consultant with the KBC, leads a session on Reclaiming Inactive and Less Active Church Members at 8 p.m.
Discipleship: Paul Johnson and Sebastion Valquez will be leading training sessions in What’s Missing in Our Discipleship Strategy at 7 p.m. and A Clear Pathway to Disciple Others at 8 p.m.
Johnson is retired after serving as the church strengthening team leader at the Canaadian National Baptist Convention for 22 years. Sebastion and his wife, Erin, are missionaries with the IMB.
Sept. 1
Evangelism: Two sessions available with Sam Greer, a local church pastor since 2004 serving in Louisiana and Tennessee, leads How to Remain a Gospel Conversational Church at 7 p.m., and Kenny Rager, the evangelism associate on the Evangelism Team at the KBC, leads the second session, Developing a Flexible, One Year Evangelism Strategy, at 8 p.m.
Finance: Don Spencer, a certified financial planner with 35 years of experience as church financial benefits consultant of the KBC, will lead sessions on How to Structure Financial Support at 7 p.m. and Handling Money in the Church at 8 p.m.
Sept. 3
WMU: Liz Encinia, the executive director of the Kentucky WMU, leads two sessions on Engaging Your Church in God’s Mission at 7 p.m. and Serving through Compassion Ministries at 8 p.m.
Abuse Prevention: Job Juarez, the church planting and development associate for the KBC, will lead a two-hour session on Dealing with Sexual Abuse in the Church at 7 p.m.
“Everyone who does anything in their local church should make plans to attend EQUIP 2020,” Gray said. “There is something for everyone who wants to serve Jesus with excellence.”
