LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) - Public school leaders aren’t the only ones working to develop plans to teach children as the coronavirus pandemic drags on. Church children’s ministry leaders and teachers are developing plans to serve children and their families even in uncertain times.

One source of training for church leaders in the Kentucky Baptist Convention’s EQUIP online training event which begins Tuesday. Matt Flanagan, KBC children, and student ministry consultant believes ongoing training is essential for effective ministry.

“Churches that don’t provide ongoing training often struggle with burnout and frequent turnover in their teachers,” Flanagan said. “The KBC’s EQUIP is a great way to partner together to provide practical training that will lead to confidence, competence, and unity as volunteers serve together in discipling children and caring for families.”

Flanagan has helped develop two seminars training church leaders to teach biblical truth to children. “As churches are able to re-gather, some families may choose to stay online while others gather in person,” he said.  “This session will focus on practical helps in building unity without multiplying work.”

Rachel Cobb, director of Preschool and Children’s Ministries at First Baptist Church Richmond, will be helping to lead a seminar on developing in-person and online children’s ministry. “The children’s ministry sessions will focus on transformational teaching and merging ministry after a pandemic. We’ll discuss best practices in the classroom and ways to create 'hybrid' ministry, serving both those who are ready to be safely in-person and those who continue to worship and connect online,” Cobb said.

The children’s ministry seminars are scheduled for Tuesday at 7 and 8 p.m. EST.

“I would encourage leaders to register their volunteers to watch the training online from their homes and then schedule an online discussion to process and apply what they have learned to their church ministry,” Flannagan said.
