We are so tightly connected to the Internet that once guests or friends visit our homes, the first thing they say is: “What is the Wi-Fi password?” and not: “How are you?”
Not all people understand that revealing this info is not secure. Guests can accidentally get infected with a computer virus or connect an already-infected device to your network. Some malware types may infect other devices connected to the same network.
A guest network
You can stay safe and be hospitable at the same time. For this, you need to create a guest Wi-Fi network. It represents a separate access point on your router. All your home devices should connect to the main network. The guest network becomes a separate entry point that also provides Internet access but does not interfere with the home network. It is built specifically for guests.
Creating a guest network is actually a win-win approach. Your guests will not be disconnected from the world, and at the same time, your own devices and data will remain safe.
How to create a guest Wi-Fi network
It is quite easy to set up a guest network. It is also free. You will not have to pay additional money for the Internet, and you do not need to go and buy an additional Internet cable.
Most likely your router allows creating a guest network automatically. Simply go to the router settings and activate it. First, type the IP address of your router in the browser, typically 192.168.0.1. If it does not work, you can find the address in your device’s manual.
Before creating a guest network, it is recommended to change the password. If you have never done it, you can find your login and password in the ISP contract or the manual. It is also desirable to update the router firmware. More secure versions get released from time to time. Hackers like to target old routers and they have plenty of vulnerabilities.
Navigate the router setting and look for the Guest Network option. It can be hidden in one of the sub-categories. In case you cannot spot it quickly, again, read the user manual or search the Internet by typing the router model. For old or cheap routers, it may be required to set the guest network manually.
Once you enable the guest network, you can create its name. For some router models, it may look like an SSID. Your guests will see this name in the list of available networks.
Sometimes it takes several minutes for the new network to appear. Before you start using it, be sure to go through this checklist:
• Set a network password. Do this right after entering the network name. Although it is a guest network, only users with passwords should be able to connect to it.
• To avoid Wi-Fi data interception, select the encryption type. Opt for WPA2. It is a strong algorithm that all modern devices support.
• Disable the option that allows visitors to access network resources. Guests should not be able to see folders or files, or any other info. Some routers call this option Isolate as you isolate the home network from the guest network.
• Disable the option that allows access to router settings. Guests should be able to change anything in router settings.
Now you are good to go.
As an additional protection measure, you can secure your connection and traffic with the help of a VPN. You can install it on the router and configure it for the local and the guest network.
