Saab to equip its next-generation CMS on more RAN ship classes - Naval Technology

The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has revealed plans to expand the deployment of Saab’s next-generation combat management system (CMS).

Under the plans, the CMS will be fitted on the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Maritime Mine Counter Measures (MCM) and Military Survey vessels.

Australian Defence Minister Melissa Price said the move is expected to create dozens of local jobs and opportunities for Australian businesses.

Price said: “This is another major milestone for the Morrison Government’s investment in a National Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise, where A$75bn will be spent on maritime capabilities over the next decade.”

These two ship types are in addition to RAN’s Anzac, Canberra, Supply, Arafura vessel classes.

Saab Australia is the country’s sovereign CMS provider. It has almost 600 skilled workforce delivering defence and security solutions.

Price added: “This project will create Australian jobs for engineers and project managers, developing further capability within the industrial supply chain and supporting a major, multi-million-dollar expansion of Saab’s south Australian and west Australian facilities.

“Saab’s investment and recruitment since signing their enterprise partnering agreement with defence in February 2020 is clear evidence that the Morrison government’s Naval Shipbuilding Plan is creating jobs and delivering sovereign capability.

“In the first 12 months of the EPA, Saab has been awarded almost A$20m and welcomed 108 new staff across Australia.”

Last week, the Australian DoD contracted BAE Systems Australia for round production of the next-generation Nulka decoys and launcher systems.
