With the release of Monster Hunter Rise players once again have the opportunity to go on adventures with everyone’s favorite anthropomorphized felines, the palicos. This time around, they’re joined by palamutes, canine helpers that can also be used as mounts to move around maps faster. As with the previous games, palicos (and now palamutes) have special buddy skills that can be equipped to further enhance their abilities.
As is often the case in Monster Hunter games, Capcom can be somewhat stingy at explaining exactly where to find these abilities and how to use them. Buried several pages deep into the menu system, are some of the most vital skills every animal buddy should have, and none of them are equipped by default. It’s important to know where to find the Buddy Skills and how to use them.
Buddy Skills in Monster Hunter Rise
First things first: The Buddy Board. This valuable location is where players change everything about their buddies, including which to bring along into battle, the armor they wear, and most importantly, the skills they have equipped. All of the Buddy Boards look the same and feature wooden sculptures of a palamute and a palico surrounding a bulletin board. They can usually be found standing next to equipment boxes where player equipment and items can be tweaked.
Interacting with a Buddy Board in Monster Hunter Rise will bring up a selection of options, and the one players will be interested in is called “Buddy Skills.” Selecting that will bring up the option to choose palicos or palamutes. And then choosing one of those options will take players to the skills page of their buddy.
Buddies in Monster Hunter Rise can have up to five slots in their Skill Memory, which they won’t reach until they attain the level of 25. Additionally, as buddies level up, they’ll learn more skills that can be equipped into those slots. The skills vary, with different types of palicos getting completely different skills depending on their hunting type. The skills themselves cost between one and three points. With a maximum of five slots, players will have to make hard choices about which skills to equip their buddies with.
Though Monster Hunter Rise mentions Buddy Skills deep within the Hunter Info section of the main menu, it’s not obvious that this is a feature players can interact with. It’s a shame too because it’s one of the best ways to improve the chances of completing a successful hunt. Effective palico and palamute management can be the difference between “quest failed” and “quest complete.”
