Middletown Township Police Receive Grant Funding to Equip Officers with Body-Worn Cameras
Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation in November that requires every police department in the state to have body-worn cameras by June 1.
On June 1, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced grants for 487 law enforcement agencies statewide for body-worn camera purchases. All departments that applied for grants will receive funding, officials said.
Grewal said New Jersey is among five other states that will have body-worn cameras on all uniformed officers. The state is spending $57 million to provide roughly 28,000 cameras to 487 law enforcement agencies in New Jersey.
Middletown Township received a $264,940 grant, which will be used to purchase 130 cameras for Middletown officers.
Grewal added, “All people behave better when they know that they’re on tape. That’s just a common-sense fact we’ve seen. It’s true for both police and the citizens they interact with.”
Camden police have been wearing cameras since 2016 and will act as the example for other agencies now using video footage to reexamine cases.
