PISCATAWAY, NJ — Under a new law that went into effect Tuesday requiring police officers across New Jersey to be equipped with body worn cameras, township officials said the Piscataway Police Department was ahead of the curve purchasing units for its officers in advance of a $57 million state grant program.
“To enhance the skilled nature of our local law enforcement, we are moving forward with outfitting our officers with body worn cameras (BWC) and training our personnel on their use,” said township officials in early May.
“This new undertaking will promote professional accountability, public transparency and community trust,” they said.
Police did not release how much the 93 6.9-ounce cameras cost the department which did not receive any of the $57 million grant but “are hopeful to recoup some funds in the future,” said a spokesman.
“Activating a BWC is done in a variety of ways, one being manually because there are certain situations under the Attorney General’s directive when it must be either turned on or off,” said township officials. “Other actions automatically prompt a BWC to turn on such as removing either a taser or firearm from a holster.”
