This weekend's Week 2 schedule of college football games on CBS Sports Network is a five-game slate of contrasting styles featuring unique matchups, with everything from option attacks to air-raid schemes. It's a slate of nonconference matchups that will begin Friday night and run through the early hours of Sunday morning.. That means schools will be seeking all-important victories to bolster their prospects of bowl eligibility before the grind of conference play ramps up.
Utah State kicked things off Friday night against a North Dakota team ranked No. 9 in the FCS. Saturday's slate features four FBS vs. FBS matchups, including a couple of games involving Power Five teams.
Purdue will be looking for a drama-free win at Connecticut before hitting the road again next week for a major test at Notre Dame. In the last game of the day, Vanderbilt will play an uncharacteristically late game for an SEC squad at Colorado State in a battle of teams coming off bad losses. In between, there will be contests involving contrasting styles as Army's option attack goes up against Western Kentucky's pass-heavy scheme, while Rice vies for a victory over cross-town rival Houston.
Here is the full rundown of all the Week 2 action on CBS Sports Network.
UConn vs. Purdue
Date: Saturday, Sept. 11 | Time: 3 p.m. ET
Location: Pratt & Whitney Stadium -- East Hartford, Connecticut
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App
Storylines: UConn got off to such a bad start to 2021 that the Huskies and coach Randy Edsall have already parted ways. Things may only get worse Saturday as they face their first Power Five opponent of the season. Purdue comes to town after beating Oregon State 30-21 in Week 1. Even if the Boilermakers are looking ahead to next week's showdown at No. 9 Notre Dame, they shouldn't have any trouble with the Huskies.
Rice vs. Houston
Date: Saturday, Sept. 11 | Time: 6:30 p.m. ET
Location: Rice Stadium -- Houston
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App
Storylines: Houston jumped out to a 14-0 lead against Texas Tech last week before the Red Raiders outscored the Cougars 38-7 the rest of the way. It was a tough loss for a program looking to compete in the AAC under third-year coach Dana Holgorsen. Now Houston faces a bitter rival in nonconference play as it makes a four-mile trip across town to play a Rice team that led Arkansas at halftime last week before falling 38-17.
Colorado State vs. Vanderbilt
Date: Saturday, Sept. 11 | Time: 10 p.m. ET
Location: Canvas Stadium -- Fort Collins, Colorado
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App
Storylines: The Rams and Commodores were among the six FBS teams that lost to FCS opponents in Week 1 ... and neither game was particularly close. Colorado State lost 42-23 to South Dakota State, while Vanderbilt dropped a 23-3 stunner to East Tennessee State. CSU's was a bit less embarrassing since SDSU played for the FCS national title just a few months ago. But both programs will be looking for a cleanse following atrocious starts to their seasons.
