How Networking is Used by OSF HealthCare, MKI, Zaymer, EPB, and James Cook University: Case Studies - Datamation

Having a reliable infrastructure and foundation for your network is an essential part of running a business, regardless of the size and industry.

See how five companies and organizations from various industries elevated their networks using modern hardware and software networking solutions:

1. MKI

Mitsui Knowledge Industry (MKI) is the Tokyo-based division of Mitsui & Co. that’s responsible for delivering IT services to the remainder of the brand.

With just under 2,000 employees, MKI needed a whole new network model to support the changes in their work environment.

It was also necessary that they reduce the burden of every network change to focus on reorganization and personnel transfers. As a part of a flexible and semi-remote working model, MKI looked to eliminate functionality and bandwidth restrictions on the use of video conferencing that often manifested as internet latency.

With Cisco’s help, MKI was able to renovate their entire network with Cisco DNA and adopt Cisco SD-WAN for the main WAN network.

“The new network is an important foundation of ‘the work-X project,’ aiming to form ‘a group of individuals with strong capabilities’ by adopting new work styles,” says Yasuhiro Nishiyori, sales department leader at MKI. “For example, not to mention the accessibility to cloud service, the network will need to accommodate a hundred times more devices than the current number of employees.”

Industry: Technical services

Networking solutions: Cisco DNA, Cisco SD-WAN, Cisco SD Access, and Cisco Meraki

Outcomes:

  • Controlling traffic per app to reduce delays
  • More flexible work modes
  • Security enrichment through logical network segmentation
  • Cost and operational burden reduction through centralized management

2. James Cook University

James Cook University (JCU) is a leading research university in Queensland, Australia, that conducts research internationally.

The research JCU regularly conducts, the effects of climate change on tropical animals and plants in addition to local inhabitants, generates massive amounts of data. Such research can be hard to access afterward to the 22,000 students and 5,000 staff members they serve across three campus grounds in Australia, Cairns, and Singapore.

By partnering with Juniper Networks, JSU built a unified network that connects all of their data resources. Additionally, the network has a consistent design across the core and data centers, allowing the IT team to apply policies as necessary to the various segments.

“Our researchers can now access critical applications, such as bioinformatics, ecoinformatics, and IoT analytics, which generate multi-terabyte data sets,” says Swain Kirk, head of ICT infrastructure services at JCU.

Industries: Higher education

Networking solutions: Data Center, Network Automation, Juniper SDN, Management and Operations, and Switches

Outcomes:

  • Enabled researchers to exchange massive files with peers easily
  • Ability to contain failures and breaches through network segmentation
  • Grants students 24/7 access to over 49,000 recorded lectures
  • Power-efficient switches align with JCU’s sustainability focus

3. Zaymer

Zaymer is a microfinance provider and the largest supplier of microloans in Russia, with two million clients who can get and approve a loan in approximately eight minutes.

As competition that copies their successful business model increased, they needed to go above and beyond by switching to new technology that can drastically improve customer experience whilst ensuring data security and smooth data exchange with various third parties.

Dell Technologies, alongside VMware, enabled Zaymer to run various applications in an active-active scenario between their two data centers along with affordable virtual machines and containers.

Zaymer was able to enhance security by micro-segmenting their network and including a distributed firewall. User experience also saw a change for the better, thanks to load balancing, automation, and proper IP management.

“We settled on a comprehensive solution based on Dell Technologies and VMware. This meant we got a single point of contact with one provider, which greatly simplified the implementation process,” says Vyacheslav Klimov, system architect at Zaymer.

Industry: Finance

Networking solutions: Dell SmartFabric OS10, Dell storage arrays, Dell PowerSwitch, VMware vSphere, VMware NSX-T networking, and PowerEdge MX Modular Servers

Outcomes:

  • Strengthened business strategy thanks to a scalable and flexible network
  • Ability to use bespoke, in-house software
  • Open source services integration
  • Easy maintenance and management

4. EPB

EPB is one of the United States’ largest publicly owned electric power and communication services providers. They serve over 170,000 homes and businesses, providing them with fiber-optic lines with voice, video, and data.

One way EPB manages their thousands of business customers is by creating packaged offers that allow them to fully manage and control the wireless network for their customers who lack the infrastructure and resources to handle it themselves.

EPB settled on Arista Networks because of their intuitive UI, exceptional network performance, advanced Cognitive Wi-Fi, and robust reporting system. Together with Arista Access Points that they used with their clients, Arista technologies allowed EPB to easily and efficiently manage networking for their customers.

“We’ve been extremely successful in our partnership with Arista Networks,” says Valerie Lucas, product development at EPB. “Arista is a great complement to our ISP, providing us with the ability to package the best technology and wireless network solutions for our business customers.

“In addition, Arista’s reporting and interface ensures EPB can continue to provide the exceptional customer service that we pride ourselves on.”

Industries: Energy

Networking solutions: Arista Wireless Access Points and Arista Cognitive Wi-Fi

Outcomes:

  • Enabled EPB to create a simple, monetized Wi-Fi offering for local businesses that lack resources
  • Enhanced customer service through intuitive dashboard reporting
  • Increased in ISP value and overall customer retention

OSF HealthCare on Extreme Management Center

OSF HealthCare is an integrated health system and hospital, with 13 acute care facilities, two nursing colleges, and a physician organization. They strongly believe innovation and digital transformation are capable of drastically improving the lives of patients.

On top of their close attention to patients’ health and medical innovation, OSF still needed to upgrade their outdated network infrastructure and conform to security and compliance requirements whilst reducing operating costs.

With POINTcore on board alongside Extreme, OSF was able to start from scratch with an automated network with Extreme Fabric Connect and Extreme Management Center that allowed them to forgo constant port reconfiguration.

Together, they created a standardized infrastructure model across all OSF locations. This allowed them to minimize interdependencies and avoid disturbances and failures during updates and patching.

“Our network infrastructure was working, but in order to remain secure, efficient, and prepared for the future, we needed to reevaluate our infrastructure,” says Karl Belter, network architect at POINTcore. “Our experience with Extreme during the implementation was responsive and refreshing.

“We felt like they really listened to everything we had to say.”

Industry: Healthcare

Networking Solutions: Extreme Management Center, ExtremeSwitching, Extreme Fabric Attach, and Extreme Fabric Connect

Outcomes:

  • 30% capital replacement savings
  • Reduced maintenance needs by 60%
  • Enhanced network security
  • Cost reduction
  • Simplified network model
