Services across Louisiana government — from getting a driver's license to registering a boat to working with Medicaid — were unavailable Thursday after a computer problem hobbled state agencies.
The outage, caused by a hardware failure of a firewall, affected all state cabinet-level agencies, said Jacques Berry, a spokesperson with the state Division of Administration. It started overnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
"We worked through the night," Berry said Thursday morning.
State officials originally thought service would be restored during the workday, but said later in the afternoon that they were expecting things to be fixed during the night.
The outages were not caused by a cyberattack, Berry said.
"This is nothing from the outside," he said.
Agencies across the state told customers to hold off on taking care of business with them. They urged people to check their Facebook pages and websites for the latest information.
"Due to a statewide network outage affecting all Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles field offices, we are currently unable to provide services to residents at this time," the OMV said in a statement. "We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and cooperation."
The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said its email and telephone systems were not working, and said staff could not process boat registrations or licenses.
"We've been down since the middle of last night," said Ed Pratt, spokesperson for the state's Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. "We're still working with customers who come to our office, as much as we can."
The Department of Transportation and Development was similarly hamstrung.
"One of the biggest areas it's affecting this morning is truck permits — when drivers need to have a state permit for a heavy truck load," said DOTD spokesman Rodney Mallett.
The Department of Health warned that communications sent to staffers may not have gone through Thursday. The Medicaid customer service call center and self-service web portal were both down, as was the system to report complaints to the Health Standards Section.
Other agencies affected by the outage included:
- Department of Children and Family Services
- Department of Veterans Affairs
- Department of Public Safety
- Department of Corrections
- Louisiana Workforce Commission
- Department of Revenue
- Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness
- Louisiana Economic Development
- Department of Natural Resources
- Department of Environmental Quality
- Department of Education
