Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) announced on Wednesday that they will be rebranding their regional sports network NBC Sports Washington as Monumental Sports Network starting this coming September.
MSE fully acquired NBC Sports Washington, the TV rights holder of Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and Washington Mystics games, last year. At the time of the acquisition, the company majority owned by Ted Leonsis, announced that this rebrand would arrive for the 2023-24 season.
The rebrand is the first tangible step taken by MSE to build their own powerful streaming platform that will give them the ability to shape the primary coverage of their own sports teams.
NBC Sports Washington is becoming Monumental Sports Network.
Fans will be able to access an enhanced viewing experience including live @Capitals & @washwizards games, original programming with new on-air talent like @Rachel__Nichols & much more.

As part of their announcement, MSE specifically teased certain updated programming as well as a “better live experience” for TV viewing that will include “new camera angles, alternate feeds, and robust in-game access”.
Our first glimpse of that comes in the trailer they released. Examples featured in the short 30-second video include a preview of the new “on-air look”, point-of-view announcer feeds, new original shows, and the comeback of Caps Red Line which RMNB once co-starred on.
The first new original show that the network is pushing will be hosted by journalist and sportscaster, Rachel Nichols. The Potomac, MD native will guide an interview series with the many sports personalities around the DMV area.
“Some fun news,” Nichols tweeted Wednesday. “In addition to my role at Showtime Sports here in LA, I’m going to be headlining a show on the new Monumental Sports Network, talking to the players, politicians, and celebs that make my hometown one of the most interesting places in the world. So much sports.”
The Washington Post’s Scott Allen also reports that the network has plans to broadcast full or condensed classic games from each of its teams, potentially adding commentary from the players who starred in those games. They are also exploring having their own version of ESPN’s “Manningcast” alternate feed which will see a rotating cast of former players and on-air talent discussing games live as they happen.
Wednesday’s announcement was solely focused on the network’s linear channel with no real update provided on plans to address direct-to-consumer streaming options. There is also no mention of any football or baseball related content despite the company’s links to both sports. It has been heavily reported that Leonsis had interest in purchasing MLB’s Washington Nationals but there has been no update on that process.
