Utah boy, 11, is competing for $25,000 on Food Network's "Kids Baking Championship" - Salt Lake Tribune

I am thoroughly impressed with Henry Muranaka, an 11-year-old Bountiful boy who’s a contestant on the Food Network’s “Kids Baking Championship.”

He’s one of 12 kids from around the country who made it on the show, which is no small accomplishment all by itself. He’s brave enough to compete, with cameras aimed at him while he creates cakes and cookies and pies — knowing that millions of viewers are going to see him.

And the kid can bake. I’m not sure my mother would’ve let me in the kitchen when I was 11, and Henry is whipping things up for his family, friends and now a national viewing audience.

And he does it for fun.

“I always helped my mom bake, whenever she would make something,” Henry said. “So during quarantine, I decided that I was going to take some baking classes.” He was drawn to it because “you can just decorate however you want to decorate it. So it’s, like, pretty creative.”

(Rob Pryce | Food Network) Henry Muranaka, 11, of Bountiful works on a cake as he competes in "Kids Baking Championship."

So he signed up for an online baking class at Salt Lake Culinary Education, and that’s how he ended up on “Kids Baking Championship.” Someone there “sent my mom an email, and it was, like, ‘Oh, wow, there’s this baking championship he could try out for.’ And I’d never heard of it. So we watched a couple episodes. And I was, like, ‘Yeah!’”

Henry filled out an application, which was just the beginning of “a pretty long process. You have to make stuff and then send pictures and all that. I made, like, cakes and pies and stuff.”

And now he has a chance to turn his love of baking into $25,000 — the prize for the winner of “Kids Baking Championship.”

Oh, and this young Utahn turned his passion for baking into a school science project. Really!

Season 12 of the show, hosted by Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman, begins Monday on the Food Network — 6 p.m. on Dish and DirecTV; 9 p.m. on Comcast. In the first of 10 episodes, create cakes with pictures on top. Upcoming challenges include “blondies that celebrate … hopscotch” and “cafeteria lunch dessert imposters,” according to the Food Network.

(Rob Pryce | Food Network) Bountiful 11-year-old Henry Muranaka (front row, second from left) is one of a dozen contestants on the new season of "Kids Baking Championship."

A few things to know about Henry

He’s a seventh grader at Bountiful Junior High • Henry was born in California, but moved to Utah when he was about 18 months old.

He really likes to bake cream puffs • “I started to make cream puffs quite a while ago” when he took a class and decided, “They’re pretty hard to make, which is kind of fun. But it’s also really fun because they always taste good, and you can make them different because you can fill them with, like, whipped cream or something. So you can, like, make any flavor you want.”

He investigated the science of cream puffs • “I did my science fair project last year on cream puffs and what type of flour’s the best to make them pop up and have the most space inside,” Henry said. He baked the same cream puffs using three types of flour — high-gluten flour, bread flour and all-purpose flour. The high-gluten flour created the most space inside the cream puff, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be using it to bake them in the future “because there was too much space inside.” But the project impressed the judges. “I made it to the state science fair,” Henry said.

Competing on a Food Network show was “pretty surreal” • “You see it in the videos,” Henry said, “but when you first see it in person, it’s way different. … You just understand what it looks like more. And there’s so much stuff for baking — baking-related stuff.” And it was a surprise to see how many people it takes to make a TV show. “Yeah, there’s, like, so many people filming you.”

He felt the pressure • Not surprisingly, it’s harder to bake when cameras are aimed in your direction and you know you’re going to be part of a national TV show. Although you can make a mistake baking at home and nobody knows, when you’re on camera, “if you, like, mess up one thing, it might just be on the show. And it’s kind of stressful because then you just don’t look as good or whatever.” Henry was definitely nervous, “because there’s so many cameras, like, watching you and you’re competing for a large sum of money. So, yeah.”

He kept an eye on the clock • There are strict time limits on the show. “At home, you have enough time. But there ... it’s pretty stressful.”

He bonded with his fellow contestants • Henry and the other 11 contestants got to know each other “really well … because we were all kind of stressed, in a way. You just talk to them, and then you get to become good friends, because they like the same things as you.” And, he said, the contestants were pretty supportive of one another. “Yeah, they wouldn’t be, like, ‘Oh, this guy’s not doing good. Hurray!’. They were kind of more nice.”

He loved being on the show • Henry said that, given the chance, he would “100%” do it over again. “It was a really good experience.”

He had to keep quiet • Henry couldn’t talk to anyone, other than his parents, about being on the show. His friends know now, and the news didn’t altogether shock them. “They know I really enjoy baking, so I wouldn’t say they were, like, super surprised. But, yeah, they were pretty impressed, I guess.” He does bake for them, on occasion. “Yeah, sometimes, my friends will be, like, ‘Can you make cupcakes?’ and I’ll just be, like, ‘OK.’”

He doesn’t spend all his time in the kitchen • He plays the piano, and “I really like to play video games,” he said. “I play tennis quite a bit, and I like mountain biking.”

He might want to be a baker when he grows up • “Probably, yeah,” Henry said. “I mean, I would like to be a baker, but I don’t know. It’s quite a lot of work.”

Frank Thomas blasts Fox News after network claimed he died - USA TODAY

Author Mark Twain once said "the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated," when rumors had spread that he had met his demise.

On Friday morning, Fox News apparently took that to heart when it came to Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Thomas.

During the show, The Faulkner Focus, the network ran a video to honor those prominent figures who have passed away this year and showed "The Big Hurt" during his career to go along with a clip of his Hall of Fame induction.

But Thomas is not dead, and Fox News meant to pay tribute to former MLB outfielder Frank Thomas, a three-time MLB All-Star who was born in 1929 and died on January 16 at the age of 93.

The now 55-year-old Thomas, who was a Fox baseball analyst from 2014 until this past spring, responded to his "death" on social media.

HOT STOVE UPDATES: MLB free agency: Ranking and tracking the top players available.

"Ladies and Gentlemen I’m very sorry my ex employer Fox would be this irresponsible on National TV this morning. Yes I’m alive and doing well," Thomas wrote. "This blows my mind also.

Thomas can still be seen these days peddling Nugenix supplements on your television.

Fox News later issued a correction acknowledging the mistake.

"We misidentified Frank Thomas, the three-time All-Star for the Pittsburgh Pirates," anchor Julie Banderas said. "The Frank Thomas we showed you unfortunately was also a former pro baseball. He is very much alive."

U.S. Sanctions Network Funding Houthis In Response To Red Sea Attacks - Forbes

Topline

The Treasury Department announced sanctions Thursday against one individual and three money exchanges it says have been responsible for helping Iran transfer “millions of dollars” to the Yemen-based Houthi militia group over attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea.

Key Facts

The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Turkey-based money exchange known as Al Aman, which it said served as a “waypoint” between the Houthis’ Iranian backers and the group’s businesses in Yemen, and Nabco Money Exchange and Remittance Co., which it said was connected to Al Aman’s trade.

The Treasury Department also sanctioned Nabil Ali Ahmed Al-Hadha, the president of the Currency Exchangers Association which is based in Houthi-controlled parts of the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, alleging Al-Hadha had “millions of dollars” passed through his accounts in Turkey to Houthi-affiliated accounts in Yemen, and used Yemen-based, Houthi-run Al Rawda Exchange and Money Transfers Company to convert the funds into Yemeni rials to hide the source of the money.

The Treasury Department alleges the sanctioned parties were directed to transfer millions of dollars to the Houthis by Sa’id al-Jamal, an Iran-based financier that has already been sanctioned by the U.S.

The sanctions aim to restrict the transfer of money to the Houthis, “who continue to conduct dangerous attacks on international shipping and risk further destabilizing the region,” Brian Nelson, under secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said.

The Treasury Department said the militant group’s attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden on international shipping vessels “have sharply curtailed the free flow of commerce through the region and represent a clear violation of international law.

U.S. forces stationed around the Red Sea shot down 17 drones and missiles fired by the Houthis Tuesday—a week after the Pentagon announced the U.S. was leading a global security force to protect and defend ships traveling through the Red Sea.

Key Background

Since the start of current fighting between Israel and Hamas over two months ago, the Houthis, an Iran-backed Shi’ite rebel group aligned with Hamas, have launched multiple attacks against U.S. Navy ships, cargo ships, and oil tankers traversing through the Red Sea between Asia to markets in Europe and the west. The Houthis emerged in the 1990s and are fighting against the Yemeni government. The group has control over many parts of Yemen, including the capital Sana’a, which it captured in 2014. The group is aligned with Iran in its opposition to Saudi Arabia, which backs Yemen’s officially recognized government.

Frank Thomas rips Fox News after network said he died in 2023 - Chicago Sun-Times

Frank Thomas wants everyone to know that he is well. And alive, too.

The Big Hurt, the White Sox’ first-ballot Hall of Famer who has remained in the public eye in broadcasting, was mistakenly included by Fox News in an “in memoriam” video Friday morning.

“Ladies and Gentlemen I’m very sorry my ex employer Fox would be this irresponsible on National TV this morning,” Thomas posted, along with a smiling selfie from the driver’s seat of a vehicle. “Yes I’m alive and doing well. This blows my mind also.”

Frank Thomas, a three-time All-Star with the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 1950s, died this year at 93. Fox anchor Julie Banderas apologized for the mistake on The Faulkner Focus Friday after airing a video showing prominent figures who died this year. It featured The Big Hurt during his playing career and a clip of his Hall of Fame induction.

“We misidentified Frank Thomas, the three-time All-Star for the Pittsburgh Pirates,” Banderas said. “The Frank Thomas we showed you unfortunately was also a former pro baseball player. He is very much alive.”

Thomas was very much active doing Sox pregame and postgame work with Ozzie Guillen and Chuck Garfien for NBC Sports Chicago last season. He worked for Fox from 2014 till last April. He joined Friday Night Baseball coverage team for Apple TV+ this year.

Thomas played from 1990 to 2008, all but the last three seasons with the Sox.

Patton bids farewell to Rural Radio Network after a decade in broadcasting - Rural Radio Network

At dawn’s break, the airwaves on 880 AM stirred to life with the familiar crow of a rooster, followed by the resonant greeting, “Gooooooooooood morning,” from the morning show host, Clay Patton.

For nearly a decade now, Patton’s voice has been heard across the region, most recently on 15 radio stations as the market anchor for the Rural Radio Network. Patton begins his day as the KRVN AM morning show host, transitioning to the markets and making an appearance on NTV during the noon hour.

Before he signs off for the day, he delivers his final tag that listeners have grown accustomed to.

“I’m Clay Patton. Keep a straight row.”

After six years at the Nebraska Rural Radio Association Patton is stepping away from the microphone.

Patton says there have been numerous highlights in his broadcast career. From covering the 2019 Presidential visit to the American Farm Bureau Convention to traversing the landscapes of Kansas for the annual Hard Winter Wheat Quality tour, his reporting brought the pulse of these events to eager ears.

There were also notable natural disasters that Patton covered, helping to share information with listeners and to cover their stories following the events.  A story he filled about an Ohio group delivering hay to Nebraska following the 2019 floods is in among his favorites.

“While it wasn’t the brightest of times, being able to tell the stories of people impacted by those natural disasters was one of the most important things I was able to do.”

Expressing gratitude to the Nebraska Rural Radio Association for the opportunities behind the microphone, Patton also extended heartfelt thanks to the listeners.

“I want to thank our listeners for their support as they tuned in from their tractor cabs, feed truck, kitchen table and everywhere in between.”

Food Network TV star Guy Fieri dines at Italian restaurant in Florida - Palm Beach Post

Though becoming more and more common since he bought a house in Lake Worth Beach and one on Singer Island, Guy Fieri sightings are still pretty exciting. That is, if you actually recognize the Food Network superstar.

When he stopped by Venezia Italian Pizza and Ristorante on Northlake Boulevard in North Palm Beach recently, chef Albert Vogli, who is married to owner Elida Vogli, said he actually didn't recognize him at first.

Vogli said he had been working in the back making dough, and when he came out to the dining area and saw this guy looking at him, he laughed and said, "I thought he was looking for Parmigiano. That was when one of the waitresses said, 'That's Guy Fieri.' "

Food Network star, Guy Fieri, poses with customers at Venezia Pizza & Ristorante in North Palm Beach.

Vogli said Fieri was shopping at a nearby business when he stopped by the restaurant with his son, Hunter. He said they ordered two slices of pizza. Volgi said Guy had a slice with pepperoni and sausage and that Hunter had just pepperoni.

Volgi said as soon as he realized who Fieri was, he said, "I apologized for not recognizing him" and added that he knew he had seen him somewhere and commented on his gold "bling."

Two regular customers who were dining at the restaurant and recognized Fieri asked to take a picture with him. He said yes, and added, "Make sure you give the waitress a good tip."

Vogli said that both Fieri and his son were very nice.

Venezia Italian Pizza & Ristorante is located at 513 Northlake Blvd., North Palm Beach and has been serving the area since 1987.

Bobby Rivers, actor, TV critic and host on VH1 and Food Network, dead at 70 - USA TODAY

Bobby Rivers, a TV critic, Food Network host, VH1 VJ and actor, has died. The media pioneer was 70.

Bobby Rivers, an actor, television host and radio personality, has died at the age of 70.

WISN 12 in Milwaukee, where Rivers became the city's first Black film critic on television, announced his death in a story updated Wednesday.

He served as a VJ on VH1 in 1985 alongside Rosie O'Donnell and hosted his own celebrity talk show on the network, "Watch Bobby Rivers," starting in 1988. He also hosted Food Network's short-lived "Top 5" series in the early 2000s.

As an actor, Rivers played a news reporter on Seasons 1 and 3 of "The Sopranos" and as Chris Perley in Season 1 of "The Equalizer" TV series. He also played an emcee in the 1989 comedy "Identity Crisis."

His most recent acting credit was in 2008 and 2009, in two episodes of the satirical sketch comedy series "The Onion."

Rivers studied film journalism and communications at Marquette University in Milwaukee, according to the news station.

He also contributed to "PM Magazine," a nationally syndicated news and entertainment TV series broadcasted in the late 1970s through the 1980s. According to WISN, Rivers said the show "helped Milwaukee go beyond stereotypes."

Tributes from the film and television industry have poured in, with fellow actors and TV hosts remembering Rivers.

"All hail this pioneer Bobby Rivers… He brought SO much to the table. R I P Bobby," Whoopi Goldberg captioned a photo of the two smiling on Instagram Wednesday.

"I am so sad to hear this. Bobby was a terrific guy and wonderfully warm, funny and smart," Katie Couric wrote on X, formerly Twitter Wednesday.

Lee Sun-kyun,star of Oscar-winning film 'Parasite,' found dead in South Korea

Milwaukee native and fellow critic Gino Salomone mourned Rivers on X Wednesday, saying the TV critic's "razor sharp wit and ability to come up with questions that celebrities had never heard before set him apart."

He continued: "One of the first African Americans to have his own show, Watch Bobby Rivers on VH1. He will be missed."

According to Wisconsin LGBTQ news outlet Our Lives Wisconsin, which interviewed Rivers in July, the TV host interviewed everyone from Goldberg to Dolly Parton, Meryl Streep, RuPaul, Paul McCartney and Sally Field. The outlet called Rivers "Milwaukee's Black, queer media pioneer."

A cause of death has not yet been announced.

The Social Network 2 Can Overcome Its Biggest Challenge With 1 Major Change - Screen Rant

Summary

  • The Social Network 2 can focus on a different social media platform like Twitter or TikTok, solving the challenge of continuing the story of Zuckerberg and Facebook for a modern-day audience.
  • Jumping to another platform would offer a fresh take on the story, appealing to younger generations and eliminating the need to continue the story from the first film.
  • The Social Network 2 doesn't need to connect to the first movie to work; it can have a similar story and themes with completely new characters, plot, and network.

The Social Network 2 isn't officially confirmed, but director David Fincher teased the possibility of a sequel — and though there's a challenge when it comes to continuing this story, the advancement of social media offers an easy way to fix it. The original Social Network debuted back in 2010, chronicling the story of Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in the lead-up to the platform's launch. Given the popularity of Facebook when the movie came out, The Social Network proved a massive hit. It might be difficult to replicate its success more than a decade later, but that doesn't mean Fincher and Aaron Sorkin shouldn't try.

One obstacle facing The Social Network 2 is how to continue the story of Zuckerberg and Facebook for a modern-day audience. Both the platform and its creator have become controversial since The Social Network's release, and Facebook's declining popularity among new generations may cause the movie to flop. As such, The Social Network 2 probably shouldn't focus on Facebook — and it really doesn't need to.

The Social Network is streaming on Paramount+.

Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network's ending scene

The Social Network 2 can solve its Facebook problem by abandoning the social media platform altogether and focusing on another in the sequel. The title doesn't allude to any specific app or network, and there's no shortage of social media channels for a sequel to follow. Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok have all grown massively between The Social Network's release and now, and each platform has its own backstory and creator. There's no need for The Social Network 2 to return to Zuckerberg and Facebook, especially when doing so might hurt the movie's chances of success.

Related
9 Real-Life Events The Social Network 2 Could Cover Over A Decade After The Facebook Movie
Facebook's story has only grown more unbelievable in the years since 2010's The Social Network; a sequel would have plenty of material to cover.

Given the time that's passed between The Social Network and its potential sequel, jumping to another platform would make the most sense. It would offer a fresh take on the story, one that could appeal to younger generations familiar with different social platforms. It would also eliminate the need to continue the story from the first film, solving a lot of problems in the process.

A Social Network Sequel Doesn't Need To Connect To The First Movie

Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker, Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, and Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network

The Social Network 2's challenges aren't limited to the evolution of Facebook, and continuing the first movie is a difficult task regardless. For one, there's no need to continue The Social Network's story. The film already delivers a satisfying conclusion, and the continued growth of Facebook directly after wouldn't make for a compelling narrative. Likewise, it might be difficult to get the original Social Network cast to return for a sequel. Fortunately, The Social Network 2 doesn't need to connect to the first movie to work. It can have a similar story and themes, but its characters, plot, and network can be completely new.

Bobby Rivers, Food Network and VH1 Host, Dead at 70 - Entertainment Tonight

Bobby Rivers, a prolific movie critic and entertainment reporter known for his work on the Food Network and VH1, has died. He was 70.

According to WISN -- the Wisconsin television station the TV host worked for early on in his journalism career -- Rivers died on Tuesday, Dec. 26 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, the host's sister, Betsy Rivers, confirmed his death in a post on Facebook, writing "Bobby passed away last night and is no longer in any pain."

Jim Spellman/WireImage

Rivers graduated from Marquette University in the 1970s and went on to become Milwaukee's first Black film critic on television in 1979 before eventually graduating to hosting VH1's Watch Bobby Rivers and the Food Network's Top 5

During his time with VH1 in the late 1980s, Rivers had the opportunity to sit down with many A-List actors and musicians including Paul McCartney, Meryl Streep and Mel Gibson. He would later move on to Food Network in 2002 after entertainment correspondent roles with both WNBC and WNYW.

He also made several appearances in TV shows including The Equalizer and The Sopranos as well as The Onion News Network's video podcast, In the Know, his IMDB page states.

Following the news of his death, tributes from others in the field began pouring in online as those close to him and admirers from afar remembered Rivers as a "trailblazer" in the industry.

"I am so sad to hear of the passing of Bobby Rivers. Bobby was more than just a TV personality with several shows he hosted. He was an amazing person: funny, kind, joyful, a bright light to so many on social media & life - and a walking encyclopedia of film & tv knowledge," shared writer Gregory G. Allen on Facebook. "I’m so lucky to have counted him as a friend for over a decade. We’ve each interviewed the other during that time for podcasts & online shows. At one point we were working on a book of his that I would publish with my small company…I wish he would have finished it. He was so welcoming when I introduced him to Anthony and always commented on our love for each other…and would offer himself as a thruple. I’m going to miss our chats & his friendship. A warm, wonderful man. R.I.P. my friend."

"A mutual friend just told me @BobbyRiversTV has passed. Bobby was a very funny, very knowledgeable journalist, and a tireless advocate for more diversity, particularly in the classic film world. (His piece on race and “It’s a Wonderful Life” was a keeper.) I miss him already," wrote film critic Stephen Whitty.

EV fast-charging networks face a challenging 2024 - TechCrunch

Sometime in 2024, maybe as early as February, half a dozen electric vehicle charging companies will face a reckoning.

For years, they had little competition except for each other, which is to say, not much. Soon, though, they’ll have to contend with Tesla’s much-lauded Supercharger network.

The EV world, from a charging perspective, was previously split in two. There was Tesla and then there was everyone else. Tesla owners enjoyed widespread, speedy and reliable charging. Everyone else made do by cobbling together accounts from a number of different companies, none of which could boast reliability ratings anywhere near that of Tesla’s.

Then, in May, the wall fell. Ford signed an agreement with Tesla to give its EVs access to 12,000 Superchargers, a subset of the network. Starting in 2024, existing owners will be able to charge at those stalls by using an adapter, and in 2025, Ford said its future EVs will swap the Combined Charging System (CCS) plug for Tesla’s plug, also known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS).

Other automakers soon followed suit. GM was next, then Rivian, Volvo, Mercedes, Nissan, and pretty much everyone else. One of the last to adopt the plug was Volkswagen, which isn’t a surprise given its majority ownership of Electrify America, which was supposed to be the CCS equivalent of the Supercharger network.

EV owners like myself had —and still have — high hopes for Electrify America. The company was founded out of the Volkswagen diesel settlement, and it was the first non-Tesla network to prioritize nationwide DC fast charging at speeds that could support modern EVs. When Electrify America’s best chargers work, they are indeed fast, faster even than the majority of Tesla’s Superchargers.

Matt Napolitano, a longtime reporter and anchor Fox Audio Network, died December 23 of an infection, his husband said on social media. He was 33.

“With a heavy heart I have to share that my husband @MattNapolitano passed away yesterday morning,” Ricky Whitcomb posted on X/Twitter (see it below). “He loved his job and he loved bringing the news to your radios and televisions. An honest journalist who truly cared about facts. You can thank him for the last minute Jets win today.”

Whitcomb noted in another X/Twitter post that his husband of just seven months “had an auto immune disease that he was diagnosed with almost 20 years ago and died as the result of an infection.”

Napolitano joined Fox News Radio as a sports anchor for its SiriusXM channel, Fox News Headlines 24/7 — a stint that included covering the Super Bowl, World Series, Daytona 500 and more. He also mad appearances on Neil Cavuto’s Fox Business Network show. He was a two-time Associated Press Journalism Award winner for Best Overall Newscast, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“Matt did everything from anchoring to writing and producing for our audio platforms and loved being able to work in the journalism field that he trained for his entire life,” Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott wrote in a memo to staff today. “He began his Fox career in 2015 as a writer for our dedicated SiriusXM news channel Fox News Headlines 24/7. There, he quickly demonstrated his writing, producing and on-air skills. He soon became a sports reporter for the service and further excelled in that position.

She added: “After a very brief departure, Matt returned to Fox News Audio as an update anchor/reporter, again writing, producing, and anchoring on all audio platforms. Matt also appeared on Fox Business Network’s Cavuto Coast to Coast with the latest sports stories and worked with the team at our affiliate news service Fox News Edge voicing packages for various Fox affiliates.”

Before joining Fox, Napolitano was an associate news producer at TMZ.
