IDF soldiers identified and destroyed a tunnel network under the home of a key Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist, the army reported Sunday.
Soldiers of the Yiftah Reserve Brigade were conducting operations in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City when they discovered the house and tunnel belonging to Ahmed Samara, along with a cache of weapons and a rocket launcher.
Samara is said to be in charge of PIJ’s tunnel network in northern Gaza.
In addition to the weapons, soldiers destroyed twelve structures above the tunnel route that were used for terror activity, some of which were rigged with explosives. Soldiers recovered in Samara’s home a plan for the October 7 massacre and an Arabic copy of Adolf Hitler’s antisemitic screed Mein Kampf.
During the operation, terrorists opened fire toward the soldiers and activated an explosive device inside the tunnel, attempting to attack the Israelis and prevent the destruction of the entire tunnel route. IDF soldiers spotted suspicious activity and retreated before the explosion occurred, returned artillery fire toward the terrorists and stopped the attack.
