MSG Networks, YES Network announce joint venture GAME to help other teams launch streaming services - The Athletic

MSG Networks, television home of several New York-area sports teams including the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, and YES Network — the TV home of the New York Yankees — announced a joint venture Thursday that will see them pool their resources to try to help other teams launch their own streaming service. The new partnership, which is called Gotham Advanced Media and Entertainment (GAME), will be half-owned by each side.

The company is expected to help YES and MSG Networks use their knowledge of the streaming service industry to help improve their own direct-to-consumer apps and to help other teams who have interest in starting their own. MSG Networks — which broadcasts the Knicks, Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres — and YES Network — which broadcasts the Yankees, Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty — both launched DTC digital access for their games last year through MSG+ and the YES app.

Through GAME, the two companies could help other teams interested in launching their own DTC apps, helping to build those streaming services instead of forcing each franchise to try to do it in-house. There are dozens of teams that could soon be in that market as Diamond Sports Group, the parent company of the Bally’s Sports regional sports networks, continues to lurch through bankruptcy court. Currently, Diamond Sports owns the local media rights for 15 NBA teams, 11 NHL teams and 11 MLB teams. The RSNs could go out of business following the 2024 baseball season.

“With the formation of GAME, we seek to marry our collective insight, expertise and best-in-class technology not only to explore enhancements to our own products, but also to offer other networks, teams and sports properties an efficient way to launch a state-of-the-art streaming service,” Andrea Greenberg, the CEO and president of MSG Networks, said in a statement. “We are excited to partner with YES to create solutions for third-party content providers looking for a seamless way to reach new audiences.”

Jon Litner, the CEO of YES Network, said he hoped GAME could provide “a scalable tech solution for third-party content owners seeking to deliver state-of-the-art streaming experiences to their customers.”

The joint venture also opens up the possibility of further collaboration between the two companies. That in-and-of-itself is a rarity.

The Yankees and MSG have a long history. The Yankees revolutionized their business in the 1980s by selling their local TV rights to MSG Network — though the channel was not owned by the Dolan family at the time — and then took them back in 2002 when it launched the YES Network. That helped initiate a contentious period for the two sides, and Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and the Dolan family, which used to own and run Cablevision, as they sparred in the early 2000s over getting YES distributed on Cablevision.

The new partnership could open up future potential to create a DTC streaming service that houses the rights to all of the teams broadcast by YES and MSG Networks, which include all the non-NFL New York-area teams except for the Mets.
